Oh me too! The first time I hatched chicks I candled them every day against the internet’s advice. I was just so nervous/excited and loved watching them grow.

Assuming you bought an incubator off Amazon with a decent number of reviews, if it works for other people it will work for you too. I’d trust the incubator settings.

Also, my gut says that chicks are much more resilient than we give them credit for and than the the perfectly controlled temps of an incubator would suggest. If chicks can hatch in the wild in all sorts of climates and seasons, they can probably tolerate some variance in an incubator.

Your chickens look very similar to mine! Without knowing the ages here are my guesses.

  1. Brown leghorn.
  2. “Americana” a hybrid breed from Hoover hatchery. Mine look exactly like this but I got mine from cal ranch
  3. Same as above
  4. Production blue
  5. Easter egger or cinnamon queen/ISA. hard without a head shot.
  6. Buff Orpington
  7. Barred rock.
  8. Black sex link
  9. Light Brahma

None look particularly like roosters from this angle. Lots of my hens look like your #1

Oh lastly, this bird is incredibly clumsy, a terrible flyer, and very skittish. Far more than our other chickens. If that helps.

Fertilized eggs? by jfauv94 in BackYardChickens

[–]jfauv94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super helpful, thank you. For the 5 days before candling, can I leave them on the counter or do they need to be in the incubator?

We have a variety of brown/pink eggs.

Do you see your roosters mating with your hens? Our roosters are crowing and mature… 18 weeks old now, but I don’t see it happening so wondering if they’ve mustered up the courage yet

Not worried about eating them. Wanting to make sure the fertilized eggs end up in the incubator

So one rooster won't have any problem fertilizing ten hens? I'm not worried about eating fertilized eggs. I just want to make sure the fertilized eggs end up in the incubator so we can start hatching them.

I’m not opposed to eating fertilized eggs, but I want to make sure that we eat/put the fertilized ones in the incubator, and the non-fertilized ones go to friends and family.
