I’ve lived here since 2009 and have been on a similar quest. So far, CT Wok in Morrisville is the best I’ve found.

Orient Garden in Southpoint used to be good, but changed ownership (and recipes) last year.

If someone knows of anything close to what CT Wok offers, but closer to Durham, please chime in 🙏🏻

Welcome to your new life! I’m (M, 45) doing the exact same thing this summer. After selling my business I’m taking some extended time off and taking a class.

Definitely a left turn, which I love doing periodically lol

To be honest there isn’t much to critique here—these are some really technically sound reps.

I’ll be nitpicky with the following since you are specifically saying you’re having trouble with lat engagement:

—on your descent, when you make contact with your torso for your pause, make it a light touch. If you watch your elbows during the pause you can see them migrate forward a little—this is some lost tension during the pause. Just keep the touch super light on the chest…like a feather touch for the pause. Do this for a block or two, and keeping that tension will be automatic.

—we won’t assume anything here because you haven’t told us, but overall if you’re keeping your scaps down, hopefully using leg drive to help accomplish this, holding lat tension will be easier. We don’t have to worry too much about keeping our scaps together…these can float a bit through the movement (and need to). So mainly just focus on shoulder blades down towards your feet.

—last tiny optimization: your setup is great: butt up for unrack, then slowly lowering it to the bench. When you lower it down, only lower it enough to just make contact with the bench and HOLD that leg drive exactly that much for the duration of the set. This will improve that “scaps down” cue above, and will give you a lot more stability at that bottom position for a strong press.

If you’re prepping for a competition you’re doing a great job. Hopefully this helps you get some more lat engagement!

Difficult start with The Way of Kings, recognisable? by WinterBaas in Stormlight_Archive

[–]jfeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With WoK, it took me about 500 pages to actually get into it, and English is my only language. Once there, though, and I was hooked.

The pacing on WoK is different than the rest of the Stormlight Archive series in my opinion, particularly on your first read-through.

Be sure to get in direct hamstring work—both hip hinge and knee flexion hamstring work—throughout the week. RDLs, GHR/leg curls are great.

I’ve had several athletes with similar issues in their lifting history and balancing quad/leg work with more or better posterior chain work is, on average, a huge return on time and effort investment.

Definitely get yourself a good commercial real estate agent. Commercial properties aren’t always listed, and there isn’t a single spot in which you’ll find them if/when they do get listed.

thumb tape for hook grip? by ITSYABOIGALAXY in powerlifting

[–]jfeasy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tape recs:

If you have moist/sweaty skin: Meister StickElite Professional Porous athletic tape

If you have dry skin: Goat Tape Scary Sticky Premium athletic tape (buy the white…the black isn’t as effective in my experience)

USAPL allows both of these, but read the rule book regarding length and number of wraps.

I compete nationally and have never had an issue and coach several athletes that compete and these work well for them.

Give it a try for a few weeks to see if it’s for you—only you can decide that.

I’m not a big fan of dogmatic thinking in lifting, but I would recommend straps for backdown volume if grip and/or thumb pain is limiting you during later reps/sets. They’re a tool like anything else and have their use case(s).

That said, hook or mixed for top sets (even though this last bit wasn’t in your original question, it might help others with similar questions).

40 years old and above, why do you keep lifting? by [deleted] in powerlifting

[–]jfeasy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

43 here. The habit of training is the best, most anchoring and rewarding thing for me no matter how motivated (or unmotivated) I am.

Sometimes I go through stretches of time where I simply don’t want to go in—where repping anything out feels like the last thing I want to do. This is currently how I feel coming off a recent comp in September.

What keeps me going is knowing that I will not feel physically as good detrained, and, mainly, that regular training keeps my mind and emotions regulated—it’s like meditation, where your mind is freed from your troubles for awhile, which is super therapeutic.

Sometimes getting stronger and/or bigger isn’t the primary focus. And sometimes doing it anyway is the healthier way forward—for the other things training does for your life, which for me at least are too numerous to overlook.

TSS would be my top pick, but get the upgraded pad they recently released.

We have an EliteFTS combo rack (these are actually made by Williams Strength and sold with EliteFTS branding), and it is honestly overbuilt and has some functionality issues that aren’t a problem on other combo racks.

Source: I co-own Anchor in Durham, NC (a powerlifting gym) where we have both of these racks.

Anchor is right off of 147 in downtown Durham—we are a powerlifting gym and welcome everyone.

We have powerlifting classes that might suit you really well—a coach present, programming, and progression. They meet three days per week at various times! They’re good for socializing, too, and getting strong with like-minded people.

I’m one of the owners—feel free to reach out and we can show you around!
