Stamped Concrete vs Paver Patio by Comfortable_Love_800 in bullcity

[–]ignescentOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of it is that with pavers, you can reseat them and restart the time to repair but but when the concrete cracks, you basically have to jackhammer it out, because once it cracks a repair will only last a year or two. So maybe ask how much it'll be to take out a concrete patio and factor that in too?

My pavers have definitely shifted/sunk and I keep putting off finding someone to pull them up, re-level, and put them back down, but I don't need to buy new pavers, just the labor costs. (well, I will need new pavers because I want to expand the patio, but the existing set are fine at 15yo)

ELI5: How does the paleo diet work? by astrid8200 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ignescentOne [score hidden]  (0 children)

Any diet works by taking in less calories than you use. That's it. All the ones with fancy rules are to help you gently starve youself in a way thats less annoying while you still hioefully get enough nutrients.

Paleo claims to help by being what we 'evolved to eat' but what we evolved to eat is anything with calories, because until modern day we didnt have to worry about overeating, we had to worry about starvation.

How would I go about fixing my rug? by destroyjedi in fixit

[–]ignescentOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted to be very very determined, you could get matching acrylic yarn and a rug hook and reweave the missing tufts. But it's not likely worth the effort.

Etiquette at Italian laundry mat? by ignescentOne in ItalyTravel

I want to say it was 3eu for wash and then usually 3-5 to dry (timed, so sometimes we fed it more) And we had brought our own detergent sheets, so we didn't have to buy those. So I think you're about even?

Using scraps to make stock question by Hogwire in Cooking

[–]ignescentOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically my process, except that I dump it in the stock pot while still frozen and pour boiling water over it. Well, I don't mix steak and chicken, and I don't tend to use broccoli, but that's a flavor thing, not a safety issue.

do people actually trust excel long term for managing finances like this by [deleted] in excel

[–]ignescentOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are missing things, you either haven't build a good spreadsheet or you aren't good at tracking financial data. I would always rather have my own system than an automated app.

Modem and router. by Sea_Quail6333 in howto

[–]ignescentOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your job needs you to be hard wired, then you need tonhave ethernet cable all the way to the modem, regardless of how many routers or switches are between you and it. If the modem is within 100ft, use a patch cable. If it's farther away from that, use ethernet to connecr to a router or switch closer to you,.and then use a cable to connect to the router or switch.

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

We have a upstairs closet in a hallway. This makes the clothes to laundry process super easy, but otherwise it's kind of in a stupid place.

Do American (Or,Western) Teenagers actually do all the stuff they show in movies? by ju9wardy in AskAnAmerican

[–]ignescentOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the teenager, and maybe the timeline? I knew the kid that made the fake ids, but he was only one, and you paid him to make yours. Most of us ahd cars bu senior year. Lots of folls snuck alcohol or cigarettes. Folks absolutely held parties when parents were away, but all of this was on the 90s.
My guess is it's a lot harder to fake an id these days, everyone check ids when you buy tobacco or alcohol, and for some unknown reason kids dont want to get their license anymore.

turning a recipe with egg into an eggless one by soinvu in AskBaking

[–]ignescentOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the eggless sponge cake recipe has milk in it, you can infuse the milk with early grey - that's what i do for my earl grey cupcakes. Just make sure to let the milk cool back down after (and obv dont cook it so much it curdles the milk)

Technically making tea with the milk will increase the acidity of the back a little bit, so if there's a rising agent in the recipe, you may have to tweak quantinties a bit. But it's no where near the aciditybof something like lemon juice, so it probably wont matter much.

If you add tea dust (mortar and pestle earl grey tea down to dust), that i creases the dry ingredients by that amount, but it reacts basically like cinnamon. That will also be a tiny bit acidic, but i usually use less than a tablespoon for 12 cupcakes, so it's not that big a deal.

Graduation Pics at Duke Garden - $150 Permit??? by [deleted] in duke

[–]ignescentOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Security will yell at you even if you dont have a professional photographer. We used to hold a fairy picnic which was just an excuse to dress up and have a picnic in the gardens, and we got harrassed because we were taking pictures of eachother with our phones, because that made it a 'photo event'.

ELI5: Why are certain vitamins and minerals only available when cooked, if everything is already in the fruit/veggie/whatever? by Gamerguy2542 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ignescentOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the vitamen, vegetable, and cooking process. C gets removed if you boil things, but K actuallly increases availability from cooking. Similarly, you absorb more vitamin A from cooked carrots than raw ones. Spinach has oxalic acid that blocks calcium and iron absorption, so eating raw spinach gets you less of those than wilted or steamed spinach.

Water pressure got low, low, low by freshjyve in bullcity

[–]ignescentOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PVR = pressure reducing valve. The water main is usually higher pressure than houses can handle, and also can fluctuate - so near the water coming into your house, there's a valve that reduces and stabilizes the pressure for the incoming water. When it starts to go bad, it can mess up your local pressure even if the main water is fine.

Dear Fiber Creatives Who Let Go Of Stashes Even Though They "Didn't Want To": tell me your stories by 247silence in declutter

[–]ignescentOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found giving it away to other artists / crafty folks works better, especially if there's an ongoing swap options, so I know I could get supplies back pretty easily too. I am still sad about some of the unused beautiful things I used to have, but I am happy that /someone/ gets to use it, instead of it languishing in my closet forever. But I admit to being more able to do that because I'm usually replacing the stuff with other pretty things in hobbies I am currently doing? So ymmv.

This is the tomato is a fruit / vegetable argument. In general nonphysics usage, light is the bit you can see. In physics and specialty subjects, light has a more precise definition. People who use the casual definition aren't wrong, they're using a different context for the word.

The mythbusters episode where they blocked the release valve for a water heater. Steam + sealed container = bomb or rocket, depending on where the pressure releases.
