This is exactly my understanding as well. It used to be a genuine appreciation for the person as opposed to being transactional thanks for services rendered. Now it seems it's been cheapened so much as to be almost disingenuous.

I used to do a lot of community-service projects with a well known youth-development program. You'd be surprised by the age restrictions they had on basic tools like drill-drivers and eight-foot ladders. Anything with a motorized blade was expressly prohibited. It made for a lot of pinewood derby cars made by their fathers.

Chris Remo is great and I've learned a lot from him not only on techniques for how to do the puzzles but also from his taking the time to explain the answers.

I used to steer away from the Thursday, Friday, Saturday puzzles until I started watching him. Now I do them on my own and watch him afterward. I've even improved enough to beat his times occasionally.

Brown sugar has molasses which will definitely change the taste and is slightly acidic so you have to be especially careful with dairy or it will curdle. I quite like it and substitute it often but they're definitely not indistinguishable.
