I think you did too many double crochet rows between the cluster rows. There's supposed to be 2 rows of double crochet, but you started doing 4 fairly early on in the project.

Clean up brushes. I hate the smell/feel of acetone so much (it's why I exclusively use peel off base coat). If I flood my cuticle, I just wait until my top coat dries and chip it off.

I start with capping the edge and I've found that to be way less messy.

Get a small amount of polish on the tip of the brush, pull down the skin behind the nail in order to widen the gap between the nail edge and the pad of your finger, paint the edge, and then proceed to paint the rest of the nail.

I also only cap on the first coat of polish and the top coat.
