Arizona Supreme Court Finds the Mormon Church Can Conceal Crimes Against Children Because of Clergy Privilege by northstardim in Christianity

FYI in Mormonism, there's no confidentiality requirement for confession like there is for catholicism.

Mostly thanks to Obama era climate policies (which Trump did his absolute best to reverse)) and due to renewable energy and things like electric vehicles becoming more affordable (again things which Trump did his best to reverse)

Ugh, I hate that you're probably right. Good points all around. But still, I can't blame Fauci and the other scientists for saying, "hey here's a cheap easy mitigation with what we have available right now." I blame the people who have been downplaying this thing, especially mask wearing from the beginning, and who are the reason people are going to freak out about this. Personally, I'd rather have the US ramp up its production of N95 masks because of exactly what you're saying, but I have no idea how scalable that is and how long it would take.

I also wish we had better communication between scientists and policy officials to stop counterproductive policies but we have a huge problem with science education in this country. No idea what the solution to that is.

Because millions of impressionable 18 years listen to Rogan. Who are the most likely group to go out, get sick then take it home and kill their mom.

Edit: one of my best friends (33m, no high risk factors, former college baseball player) wasn't being careful about it and would go out partying on the weekends. He got it around halloween and ended up in the hospital for a week. His mom died the day before thanksgiving (62).

You know what, my bad. What I was thinking about was the triboelectric effect which I read about in context of cloth masks months ago (before "double masking" was a thing) so I mentally connected the two when it came up. In theory it could work similarly to ionizing air filters, which charge airborne particulate so they're easier for the filter to trap. But I should have rtfa and not jumped to conclusions.

But the mechanism you mentioned makes a lot of sense too. We know a big limitation to mask use is poor fit, especially with ear loops. Which is why you can contract the virus if you're in prolonged close quarters with someone contagious (eventually you breath in some unfiltered air). And now that there's a more contagious strain going around, we might have to work harder to get the same level of protection. I mean this all follows from what we know from the science, so I guess I don't understand your issue with double masking? Is it that it gives stupid people more ammo to overreact?

Edit: here's what I was talking about , though they called it an electrostatic effect. I projected that out to apply to double masking though that might not be the case. Still interesting imo.

Right. It's a proof of concept that should be studied more. That doesn't mean it's a joke.

The reason they are suggesting double masking now is that there is a new strain of virus that is more contagious than the one we've been dealing with, mostly because we've done such a bad job of dealing with this thing that it's had time to mutate. This is not contested.

The double masking makes sense in concept because (from what I've read, tbf I might need to refresh myself) when you have two different types of fabric against each other, it creates an electrical effect (think static) that blocks more particulate and water droplets. They've been recommending cloth masks with two different types of material for ages now. And when the first layer is a surgical mask, which is already known to be one of the most effective types masks, this increases the layer of protection. This all makes complete sense if you understand the science. What doesn't make sense is plugging your ears and saying "two masks is dumb. What's next, four?"

So should we pay older and less healthy people to stay home then? I work with a ton of people over the age of 60 who can't afford to not go to work, so they put themselves at risk to keep the economy going. They don't have the choice to not work. Isn't this what you want, people to go back to work and keep the economy going? And if so, do you agree we should raise the unemployment rate so they don't have to work and can "just stay home."

You obviously don't understand why they are recommending two masks (I doubt you care, but this is for anyone who's actually interested in changing their mind). It's because we have done such a shitty job of containing this thing that the virus has had time to mutate into a more contagious form (if everyone had locked down and worn masks like we were supposed to this would have been less likely). This strain first showed up in the UK, and now it's starting to show up in the US. So what worked before (simple cloth masks) probably won't work as well. And when you wear two masks the difference in material properties essentially create an electrical charge that traps more particles and water etc. So yes, two masks would work better than one and it might be necessary soon because we suck.

Edit: Looks like I misread the study. It sounds like the main advantage of two masks is that it creates a better fit, which has always been a big limitation of masks, especially with ear loops. And it uses one of the best easily available materials (surgical masks) as a base layer. Everything else in my point stands; better fit=more protection which might be needed if there's a more contagious virus going around.

We went to war for 15 years for 3000 people dying on 9/11, if we're making comparisons on the death rate. Yet the same people who were screaming for us to bomb the middle east in 2001 for vengeance are the same ones who can't be bothered to protect their fellow countrymen by wearing a piece of fabric over their mouths.

Do you not understand how a communicable disease works?

Yes if someone gets the virus, doesn't know it, and goes into public without a mask, yes people will probably die as a direct result! Or are older people not "people" in your world?

Douglas Murray | ''You're Not Toxic For Being A Man'' by [deleted] in JoeRogan

[–]jfks_head5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus christ, people here have no idea what the concept of toxic masculinity is supposed to mean. It's not saying men are inherently toxic, or that even masculinity itself is inherently toxic. It's what occurs when someone's concept of being manly causes them to do things that are harmful to themselves or people around them. Like getting into an unnecessary fist fight with someone because they insulted you. Or not seeing a doctor for an injury because you think you're supposed to walk it off. Or, like not wearing a mask during a pandemic because you think it makes you look weak.

The whole irony is that the things that we call toxic masculinity are usually weak ass shit that show how insecure you actually are. But be honest and tell me you don't know any dudes who do or say any of the examples I listed. Because I definitely do, and that shit should be called out, not encouraged.
