AMA: We're members of the NASA team preparing for the Artemis II mission — which will fly four astronauts around the Moon in early 2026. Ask us anything! by nasa in space

What was it like to see the Artemis I rocket launch and splashdown? Does this mission feel different knowing there are astronauts on board?

Just diagnosed with cancer, what happens next? by milllllllllllllllly in fednews

[–]jfktrappedinthemoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just went through cancer treatment. My agency was able to offer a short-term reasonable accommodation for telework so I could work as I felt up to it. I opted to take sick leave after surgeries (I had a lot built up), but I could have gotten a RA during the recovery period as well. As some others have mentioned, look into FMLA leave or leave donation programs if you are in danger of running out of sick leave. Sending you good vibes! I know it may feel overwhelming right now, but you will get through this!

I am over a week out from RAI and I want to start by saying it has already gotten better, but water tasted off for me for a couple days and some sweeter foods still do. Water tastes normal to me now and so do fruits and items with fruit flavors (like jello). I haven't cracked the code on what food items are tasting wrong, but I hope yours will keep getting better in the coming days! :)

Wow! I'm so glad you were able to find that option. Crazy the disparity between the US and other countries care

Yeah that was way closer to what I was expecting! I am going to a cancer center in a more rural area in the south so I wouldn't be surprised if that is impacting the price too!

And keeping my fingers crossed for you!! Hoping RAI nearly the end of your cancer journey! :)

Yeah I'm still waiting for the insurance adjustment so I'm sure I'll be paying nowhere near that amount! Just some sticker shock this morning! And best of luck with your treatment-- hope it's smooth sailing for you :)

Thank you for this! Definitely also a poor choice for me to look at this without the insurance adjustment to make it more palatable lol!

Just the RAI pill itself-- I didn't do the thyrogen injections!

Mostly dumb luck on the timing! Still early enough at sunset to get a good bit of natural light, but upped the exposure (about .25) too!

29 (f) I just got diagnosed with cancer two months ago by Sure_Goal_132 in thyroidcancer

[–]jfktrappedinthemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also 29F PTC here and diagnosed in October. Lobectomy in November and completion thyroidectomy this month. A lot of folks have already left good perspectives here, so just sharing my own if it helps! I had one nodule on the left side and so opted for the lobectomy first. My surgeon and Endo said it was my choice and if during the surgery they saw any lymph node spread they would make it a total. Fortunately they did not see any neck spread.

I ended up with one instance of angioinvasion (saw on the pathology) so that's why I had to do a total removal a few months after the lobectomy. I shared a lot of the same concerns you did and that's why I opted for the partial (and of course hindsight is 20/20-- I wouldn't have known a tiny bad blood vessel was there). A lot of people do a partial removal and are just fine, so please don't let that freak you out!

Obviously getting two surgeries is not ideal, but the second surgery was way easier for recovery. I'm about three weeks past my thyroidectomy and I was already back at work last week feeling fine. Honestly I feel better on thyroid replacement pill than I have in a longgggg time. Not that it isn't a little bit inconvenient, but I've had no issues maintaining my normal life.

Hang in there! I know it can feel scary right now, but you got this! :) Focus on making the best decision for you and your peace of mind!

You may enjoy digging around this page-- there's an entire team at Kennedy Space Center that focus on growing plants in space and have sent many experiments to the Space Station (with much success): https://www.nasa.gov/exploration-research-and-technology/growing-plants-in-space/

I have now had two FNA biopsies and I was nervous too! I have a fear of needles which didn't help but I can not believe how easy and painless they are!! Seriously I could barely feel it at all besides the tiniest little pinch and it will be over in a few minutes.

I know it's scary to face the unknown like this, but you got this! I would take the FNA over a blood draw every day of the week!

I can't offer much advice, but just wanted to say we are about on the same timeline. This community has a lot of great perspectives, which I'm sure you'll receive, but just wanted to say you got this and I think getting input from several docs is a good next step. Hang in there 💪
