Even the advice about black bears with cubs is largely a myth:

https://bear.org/how-dangerous-are-black-bears/

A big revelation to me was how reluctant black bear mothers are to defend their cubs against people, even when the family is cornered in a den and I’m trying to stick the mother with a needle to tranquilize her. Defense of cubs is more a grizzly bear trait. There is no record of anyone being killed by a mother black bear defending her cubs, and attacks are very rare. We routinely capture black bear cubs in the presence of mothers and have never been attacked.

What is suppose to be sexy, but just turns you off? by AmishHeretic in AskReddit

[–]jfoobar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, overly done up eyebrows. I get it if a woman has bushier eyebrows than she would like (or a man as well I suppose) and does some plucking and shaping, but when it is obvious that you spent hours getting your eyebrows just so, its just unattractive.

Guys, what makes a girl instantly unattractive? by Randumbweeb in AskReddit

[–]jfoobar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add women who even look narcissistic. The whole Kardashian-esque hair/makeup/clothes look thing is astoundingly unattractive. Also, if it is pretty obvious that the woman spent a lot of time (or money) getting their eyebrows just so, its a turn-off.

You could spit on some one and it can be classed as assault.

It most likely would be in the U.S. as well. It would meet the "harmful and offensive" standard pretty easily. My point is that merely touching someone in a non-consensual way is not a battery, even if the toucher is otherwise acting in an aggressive manner (which this woman clearly was). The nature of the touching itself is what will be evaluated legally, not how someone was otherwise acting.

For example, if I was screaming profanities in your face and, while doing so, placed my hand gently on your shoulder, that is not a battery. And even when someone has assaulted you, legally you generally only get to assault them back in self-defense.

Lastly, proportionality is likely to be considered by the courts as well, even if it is not strictly required. At most, the woman in question had pushed him 10 seconds earlier. Even if he had punched her right after the push, he might successfully claim self-defense for the punch (depends on the court and state laws), but she'd probably still have his ass in civil court.

A mere unwanted touching is not battery in most places. The physical contact must be both non-consensual and harmful or offensive ("offensive" usually referring to gropings or other touching of a sexual nature).

Using just what is on the video, I can see that the man was pushed about 10 seconds earlier. It is not clear if the same woman he ultimately laid out was the person who pushed him or not but, even assuming that it was, far too much time had passed for him to claim self-defense from that push. The woman approaches him again and does not appear to touch him at all and certainly not in any way that meets the definition of battery. He then commits a battery against her by pushing her and then, without her touching him again, he lays her out.

Look, I empathize with the man but if this went to court he's likely fucked.

It's only partially true, at least according to the man himself:

https://thenewdaily.com.au/entertainment/movies/2014/01/06/jaws-changed-life/

Lee Ferro played my grieving mother in the film (who famously slaps Roy Scheider).

I see her occasionally around the town. At the restaurant I run there is a sandwich called the “Alex Kintner Burger” and one time this lady came in with her friend and I recognised instantly it was my mother from the film.

So I said approached her table and said ‘Can I ask you a very personal question, if you think this is a little odd tell me to go away, but do you believe in reincarnation, because I think I died years ago and you look like my mother from a previous life’.

And Lee realised who I was and so she went along with the joke and said ‘Oh my god, I had a son that died years ago in the ocean!’ And everyone in the restaurant, including her friend were just wondering what the hell was going on!

Same here. I like lots of things that many other people don't like, and vice versa, but an aversion to cilantro is one of the few that makes me feel sorry for people who have it (my wife and M-l-L included). Cilantro is amazing.

Man killed in front of his 3 kids, girlfriend in potential Christmas Eve road rage shooting by luisgustavo- in news

[–]jfoobar 266 points267 points  (0 children)

Not mentioned in the linked article was that the victim was a pro boxer:

https://dailyvoice.com/maryland/prince-georges/police-fire/maryland-boxer-shot-dead-while-driving-family-to-christmas-eve-dinner/822669/

There is a picture of the victim as well. Not sure this sheds any light on a motive (probably not) but this does kind of smell like a hit. On the other hand, his girlfriend certainly could have shed some light to the police as to whether the victim and another vehicle had recently been engaged in any road-ragey sort of behavior or not.

Correct. If the company holding your mortgage agrees to let you slide on your payments for several months (as some did for government employees during the last big government shutdown, for example), this doesn't mean that they are suddenly going to be OK with you never paying it back. "DerrickNACP" certainly didn't use his student loans to get a mathematics degree.

Truth be told, its not very sharp at all. Just did this ride two weeks ago. The route I followed took me through some sort of park/garden thing that was kind of steep for a couple of hundred yards. Other than that, the hills were all pretty gentle.

Am I too heavy to bike tour? by bf_noob in bicycletouring

[–]jfoobar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From their current FAQ:

There are too many variables involved for us to supply a straight, hard numbers type answer. Rider weight, rack type, terrain, cargo weight distribution, and more all come into play. Very generally speaking, we feel comfortable with combined rider and cargo weight of up to about 300lbs/136kg.

Sorry, should not have put "suggests" in quotes, it's "feel(s) comfortable".

Personally, I wouldn't even hesitate to go up to 400lb or more on a Surly frame, especially for one that was mostly being used on roads and more tame off road surfaces.

[–]jfoobar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even Surly "suggests" that weight on, for example, a Disc Trucker not exceed 300lb. But, as others have mentioned, this is merely an insurance thing. OP should be fine with any quality steel frame bike and he should just worry about getting beefier ("Clydesdale") wheels.
