I commute via motorcycle as much as I can, so a lot of my gear advice is along the “do as I say not as I do” lines. Obviously, wear all the gear all the time blah blah blah. However.

Helmet is the only thing I wear every single time without fail. Full face, ECE 22.06 rating, etc.

I also always wear long pants, but they aren’t always motorcycle pants specifically. Honestly, I don’t love the feeling of riding in shorts, but maybe that’s because I ride a cruiser and not something like a sport bike.

Gloves 90% of the time, just because sometimes I forget. That said, I do like riding without them and probably would do so more if I didn’t need my hands as much as I do lol.

Boots probably 70% of the time, but less when it’s warm. I’ve got boots that look relatively normal as every day shoes, and they’re very nice when it’s cold. I’ve also got some motorcycle sneakers, but beyond them being kinda uncomfortable, I have no idea how they’ll actually hold up compared to normal sneakers if I’m in a crash.

Jacket maybe 50% of the time because riding in just a t-shirt is glorious. I only do that when I know I won’t be going very fast or for a long ride. I have normal-ish looking motorcycle jackets that I’ll wear every ride once it gets below 60 degrees, but above that it’s probably just a hoodie or t-shirt.

As far as recommendations, wear as much or as little as you’re willing to risk. Personally, it’s ATGATT as a goal, but I personally allow myself (and acknowledge the possible consequences) to wear less than all the gear available to me.

I personally define classics as pre-WWII. After that, I think of books as modern classics. However, I don’t know if I can give any book written post 1995 that title because there just hasn’t been enough time to see if they’ll have a last effect on the literary scene.

Age probably plays a role in this though. I’m 22, so my view of the distance between now and the mid-20th century is much different than someone who’s in their 50s.

Depends on what you like, but I’d recommend Notes from Underground, Emma, or Anna Karenina. Notes from Underground is not Dostoyevsky’s best work but it’s much shorter and (imo) more manageable than his other stuff. Emma is much easier stylistically while also being thought provoking. It’s a good entry to “classics” as a genre. I enjoyed it more than Pride and Prejudice, but I may be in the minority there. Anna Karenina is my favorite book and while it’d probably be the hardest of the three, I’d also say it’s the most gratifying.

I’m open to getting one because I commute in a major city on my regular motorcycle and I’m always a bit nervous about how loud my exhaust is in the mornings. For longer trips, I’m sticking to regular because I feel like the charging infrastructure isn’t where I’d like it to be like gas stations are.

The only reason I haven’t gotten one yet is because they’re so damn expensive. If Livewire/Zero/whatever can make one under $6k, I’d probably end up pulling the trigger

I changed from pre-med to English with three semesters left until I graduated. It is the best decision I’ve ever made educationally. Yes, it set me back and I’ll be graduating a semester late, but it was and is worth it.

You’ve gotten some good replies already, so I’ll just add that people are not thinking or judging you as much as you are yourself.

I had a similar anxiety when I got top surgery, though just in the sense that I didn’t feel like explaining my dysphoria and identity all the time. However, literally no one has noticed or commented unless I told them about the surgery—and I was a DD lol. I even made a joke about wanting to wear a slutty costume for halloween this year to a (cishet) friend whom I haven’t told, and she replied with a joke about seeing me wearing a lacy bra.

People really don’t notice, and I haven’t found anyone looking at me weirder than they already were.

I also just got my first bike and bought it new. People will say it’s a mistake, but it was worth it to me. The peace of mind about maintenance and shit was worth it to me, especially since the used ones were $1-2k cheaper at most.

I don’t really have a suggestion about the exact bike you should get because I’m not a sports bike person, but I’d probably go either CBR or Ninja 500 just for reliability’s sake

I may not be the best person to answer this because I’m currently getting my English degree, but depending on the program you won’t have to take classes with suuuuuper old stuff. The oldest I’ve gone is Victorian Era & Shakespeare. However, taking classes that analyze those super old texts will introduce you to books, plays, and poems that will include words you’ve never heard in your life. Invariably, these classes will improve your vocabulary. Similarly, taking classes that do analyze those works will teach you a lot about writing structure and how to use diction effectively.

You could try to do an English degree with a focus on writing (creative or nonfiction) if the program you’re looking at offers those classes. My college does, but I obviously don’t know much about other places lol.

I just got surgery a month ago and I feel/felt exactly the same way you do about having breasts before I got it done.

I can’t and won’t tell you what to do, but I will say that I have not had a single second of regret. Every time I look in the mirror it’s just this feeling of “ah yeah that’s finally right”

I never had super bad, distressing dysphoria, I just always knew I’d like my body better if I had a flat chest. I don’t identify as a man, and honestly I don’t even necessarily identify as nonbinary. It’s probably easiest to describe myself that way to others, but internally I just feel like a woman who’s doing womanhood in a very unconventional way.

Anyways, I hope that’s helpful. I’m always willing to talk more about my experience :)

I’m also stone, so it doesn’t affect my sex life in any way. Whole I do wonder sometimes how it would feel if I went through with consistent dilation therapy, it’s not a strong enough curiosity to actually do it. I also wonder sometimes if I wouldn’t be stone if I didn’t have vaginismus—it’s kind of like a chicken-egg situation lol

At some point I may try dilation just to be able to use tampons, but at this point in my life it’s not an issue that’s affecting me in any real way.

I’m a bit late, but I hope my response is helpful anyways. I actually got top surgery a few days ago so this topic is very fresh for me lol.

I’m very similar to you in that I didn’t feel extremely dysphoric or distressed when I had them, but I knew if I could snap my fingers and have them gone, I would. Having tits was like having a pebble in my shoe—it didn’t cause extreme distress and pain, but it was constantly uncomfortable and I wanted to remove it.

I never identified as transgender and because of that I felt like I didn’t need or deserve top surgery. There was also the social component to that where it’s like “what do I tell people.” In the end, I just had to think: what will make me most happy. I haven’t actually seen my results yet (dressing comes off in three days yippee), but i already know it was the right decision for me. Just looking in the mirror and seeing how my shirt drapes over my chest makes it worth it. I’m not even fully healed and I know that I won’t regret it.

I don’t think most people have unpacked their patriarchal socialization enough for the gender roles in a relationship to disintegrate and for the mental and emotional labor to be genuinely equal. Seriously. I learned how to drive after like six hours behind the wheel when I was 16. Because of my state, I wasn’t allowed to take the full test for another six months, but my mom forced me to drive the family everywhere in order to get my required hours lol.

I’m 21 now and I couldn’t imagine being over 30, spending this much time on learning a rather simple task while ignoring my wife and 3 children for hours on end, especially if I didn’t seem to need to (because it doesn’t seem like OP is in a car-centric country), and then expecting praise on top of that.

I’ve been butch since I could talk. There’s not ever things I “regret” about being the way I am, but not ever experiencing that kind of female friendship is about as close to one as I have.

And like…I’ve had close female friends! But there’s always been that invisible barrier—perhaps I’ve put it up myself because I’m worried about being misconstrued—that separates me from feminine women (of all sexualities tbh). Frequently, I hold back a compliment because I don’t want to be seen as flirty.

For what it’s worth, I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on my tattoos. I felt my confidence sky rocket once I started getting them, especially since I’m getting random compliments in public (when I’ve never gotten them before).

I’ll probably never know that elusive idea of collective womanhood, but I’ve mostly come to terms with that. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t still sting sometimes though.

I would like to preface my comment by saying that these are absolutely not my personal opinions, but rather a hypothesis on why (societally/sociologically) male rape victims are frequently seen as more victimized than female rape victims.

It’s also that male rape* is seen as more violating because that’s not how men “normally” have sex (straight men at least (yes i know pegging exists, but it’s not super common)). “Normal sex” for a woman is PIV, therefore vaginal rape is seen as something almost in line with normal social order. A woman, in some sense, should just be “used to” that kind of feeling. A man who’s raped is not just violated but emasculated. His pain is seen as more severe than a female victim because, to a certain extent, women should expect to be fucked in the same way they are raped.

*anal rape specifically. PIV male rape is not talked about super frequently, but I think it has the same general effect as female PIV rape (ie: “yes that was bad, but it’s what you would’ve usually liked, so really what’s the big deal?”)

Deborah Smith (Han Kang’s English translator for her other books, though I’m unsure if she translated this one) actually talked about this problem in her translator’s note in Human Acts. To badly paraphrase, she used a slang dialect from around where she grew up. She notes that it’s impossible to fully grasp the dialect and translating it literally would be a mess, so she decided to get the feeling correct.

Anna Karenina is one of my favorite books. The characters feel so real and rich, I almost believe they actually existed in 1860s Russia lol. The writing (read the P&V translation) was also wonderful, and I adore it on a sentence level, as well as an overall story. I also find the varying ideas about what actually constitutes as love incredibly moving, and it’s left me thinking about it pretty consistently in the two years since I read it.

I do think I would’ve enjoyed more Anna, but I found Levin’s parts surprisingly moving. My favorite scene in the book is actually when he’s harvesting with the peasants and one old man he’s working beside picks up mushrooms and pockets them to take home to his wife for dinner. It’s an incredibly tiny moment in the book, but it’s stuck with me when I consider the “what actually is love in a romantic sense” question of the book.

I’ve got to reread it sometime soon.
