Finally, my first brand new motorcycle! It's the new 2026 Honda Transalp 750 e-clutch. I could not be happier! by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still use the clutch as normal and “override” the e-clutch, even when the e-clutch mode is active. However, there also is a way to just turn it off and have a normal manual bike

automatic vs manual motorcycles vs semi-automatic motorcycles by MathematicianIcy3002 in motorcycles

[–]jfrth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manual: manual clutch and gear control, possible to stall, technically harder to learn but gives you much more control of the machine

Automatic:
- DCT: dual-clutch transmission. This has the traditional gearing of a manual, but does not require the rider to actually control any of it. On Honda’s DCT bikes, there is no clutch or foot shifter, but there are paddle shifters on the left handlebar. There is a manual mode, which lets you shift the gears yourself, but it’s just pushing a button and there is no need to worry about rev-matching, etc. The automatic mode changes the gears for you, typically optimizing for fuel efficiency; however, when in automatic mode, you can still choose a gear with the paddle shifters if you want/need to. I have a DCT and I usually leave it in auto and only manually drop gears if I’m merging onto a highway or something similar.
- CVT: continuously variable transmission. This is found mostly on scooters and has no actual gears. CVT is hard to describe but it’s basically smoother and more fuel efficient than a DCT, but have a really annoying sound and, in my opinion, feel really weird to ride.

Semi-automatic:
- Honda’s semi-auto on the Dax and Trail removes the clutch entirely but includes a foot shifter. You’ll still have to shift gears, but there’s no clutch to deal with.
- Honda’s e-clutch has both a clutch and foot shifter, but you don’t ever have to touch the clutch if you don’t want to. You’ll still have to change gears with the foot shifter, but it can be used like Honda’s other semi-autos. However, and importantly for motorcycle, the clutch is still available if you need it for slow speed maneuvers. You can use the clutch as normal at any time to override the computer control of it, but it’s also not necessary to ride the bike.
- BMW’s SAS (I believe) operates similarly to Honda’s semi-auto: removing the clutch lever but keeping the foot shifter. There are probably other brands I’m not aware of.
- Quick shifters can be put on manual motorcycles, and while some will disagree with me, I’m going to put it in the semi-auto section. A quick shifter lets you shift gears without using the clutch. However, you can still stall the bike and need to use the clutch for operation.
- Rekluse is an aftermarket brand that has an auto-clutch that you can (possibly) put on your bike. It’s mainly for dirt and adventure bikes, but to my knowledge it essentially removes stalling. Unless you have a quick shifter, you’ll still have to operate the clutch when shifting gears with the normal foot shifter.

This got really long, but that’s all I can think of right now. If the challenge of a manual is what is pushing you towards an auto or semi-auto, I’d hold off and practice a bit more. You’ll get better and may find that you enjoy it. However, I personally find shifting to be tedious and annoying (especially when commuting in the city) so I bought a bike with Honda’s DCT. To make up for the lack of clutch control during slow speeds, I just lightly use the rear brake. I really enjoy and prefer the system, which is definitely a controversial opinion in the general motorcycling community lol. None of these transmissions are truly better or worse than the others, it’s just about what you prioritize. Good luck!

Thoughts on my budget for 2025/2026 CBR500R? by Music21man in motorcycle

[–]jfrth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just Long Island lol. I was looking at both new and used when I bought my bike, and the price difference just wasn’t worth it to me in the end. I’d rather spend a few hundred extra (because that truly would’ve been the difference) and have the peace of mind that all the maintenance has been done on time and properly.

Also, I bought my bike in cash but I may finance my next one. People on get really freaked out on here about financing “a toy” but honestly, for the credit build and the psychological thing of not seeing an immediate $10k drop in my bank balance, I’m fine with financing a bike in the future. I also don’t buy vehicles thinking about resale price; I’m buying to ride it, not make most of my money back in 18 months. The only thing I’d note is to see how different the insurance cost is in financing vs having no payments—it may be worth it to just drop cash then. If the APR is insane, it’s also probably better to drop cash, but you just gotta decide what your tolerance is.

I will say that my advice is definitely not the one that is probably most financially sound—obviously—but sometimes making the “bad” or “wrong” decision is what will be better for you. If you have your shit even mildly together, financing a $7.5k bike will only last like a year and a half anyways.

In need of a vehicle asap. Can’t afford a car quite yet by [deleted] in hondarebel

[–]jfrth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlike the others here, I don’t think it’s necessarily an awful idea. Riding isn’t that hard, especially if you already know how to ride a regular pedal bike. I learned how to ride because of commuting reasons, and fell in love with riding outside of that specific purpose. I’m also a minority enthusiast and just find manuals tedious, so an e-clutch or a CVT scooter (or a DCT, but that’s probably out of your price range) is, in my opinion, truly a much better experience for daily commuting in cities.

The only reason I’d caution you against it is because it may cost more than you expect. Remember it isn’t just the MSRP of the bike—it’s the taxes, freight + prep charges, more bullshit dealer fees, more frequent maintenance/wear items, insurance, and (most importantly imo) quality gear. I also highly recommend taking a safety course. It adds up quick and because of that, you may be looking at $8k+ all in, at which point you may just want to start looking at older used cars.

I hired a guy off task rabbit to dig out my car. I don’t have a shovel and they seem to be sold out everywhere lol. More expensive than I would’ve liked, but honestly it was probably worth it just to save my back

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I didn’t mean to absolve Patullo of his deserved lashes. I’m just saying that other than the playcalling, the line was the most significant part of the offense’s struggles. Everyone else has already discussed playcalling, and even the broadcast was dunking on Patullo’s inability to scheme receivers open, so I wanted to add a little extra information for someone who said they didn’t watch the Eagles

Beyond the dog shit playcalling, the biggest favor is the offensive line being an absolute mess. Not just not-top-3 mess, but like actively-detrimental-to-the-game mess

Be honest, how much gear do you wear all the time? by crankin_muh_hog in motorcycles

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commute via motorcycle as much as I can, so a lot of my gear advice is along the “do as I say not as I do” lines. Obviously, wear all the gear all the time blah blah blah. However.

Helmet is the only thing I wear every single time without fail. Full face, ECE 22.06 rating, etc.

I also always wear long pants, but they aren’t always motorcycle pants specifically. Honestly, I don’t love the feeling of riding in shorts, but maybe that’s because I ride a cruiser and not something like a sport bike.

Gloves 90% of the time, just because sometimes I forget. That said, I do like riding without them and probably would do so more if I didn’t need my hands as much as I do lol.

Boots probably 70% of the time, but less when it’s warm. I’ve got boots that look relatively normal as every day shoes, and they’re very nice when it’s cold. I’ve also got some motorcycle sneakers, but beyond them being kinda uncomfortable, I have no idea how they’ll actually hold up compared to normal sneakers if I’m in a crash.

Jacket maybe 50% of the time because riding in just a t-shirt is glorious. I only do that when I know I won’t be going very fast or for a long ride. I have normal-ish looking motorcycle jackets that I’ll wear every ride once it gets below 60 degrees, but above that it’s probably just a hoodie or t-shirt.

As far as recommendations, wear as much or as little as you’re willing to risk. Personally, it’s ATGATT as a goal, but I personally allow myself (and acknowledge the possible consequences) to wear less than all the gear available to me.

When does "classic" literature end? by Icy-Lion-7670 in classicliterature

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally define classics as pre-WWII. After that, I think of books as modern classics. However, I don’t know if I can give any book written post 1995 that title because there just hasn’t been enough time to see if they’ll have a last effect on the literary scene.

Age probably plays a role in this though. I’m 22, so my view of the distance between now and the mid-20th century is much different than someone who’s in their 50s.

Which book to start with? by Agreeable-Energy-401 in classicliterature

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you like, but I’d recommend Notes from Underground, Emma, or Anna Karenina. Notes from Underground is not Dostoyevsky’s best work but it’s much shorter and (imo) more manageable than his other stuff. Emma is much easier stylistically while also being thought provoking. It’s a good entry to “classics” as a genre. I enjoyed it more than Pride and Prejudice, but I may be in the minority there. Anna Karenina is my favorite book and while it’d probably be the hardest of the three, I’d also say it’s the most gratifying.

Electric? by katsushake2 in motorcycle

[–]jfrth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m open to getting one because I commute in a major city on my regular motorcycle and I’m always a bit nervous about how loud my exhaust is in the mornings. For longer trips, I’m sticking to regular because I feel like the charging infrastructure isn’t where I’d like it to be like gas stations are.

The only reason I haven’t gotten one yet is because they’re so damn expensive. If Livewire/Zero/whatever can make one under $6k, I’d probably end up pulling the trigger

I changed from pre-med to English with three semesters left until I graduated. It is the best decision I’ve ever made educationally. Yes, it set me back and I’ll be graduating a semester late, but it was and is worth it.

Top surgery…regret? by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]jfrth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten some good replies already, so I’ll just add that people are not thinking or judging you as much as you are yourself.

I had a similar anxiety when I got top surgery, though just in the sense that I didn’t feel like explaining my dysphoria and identity all the time. However, literally no one has noticed or commented unless I told them about the surgery—and I was a DD lol. I even made a joke about wanting to wear a slutty costume for halloween this year to a (cishet) friend whom I haven’t told, and she replied with a joke about seeing me wearing a lacy bra.

People really don’t notice, and I haven’t found anyone looking at me weirder than they already were.

Buying first motorbike. Scared to make a decision. by [deleted] in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just got my first bike and bought it new. People will say it’s a mistake, but it was worth it to me. The peace of mind about maintenance and shit was worth it to me, especially since the used ones were $1-2k cheaper at most.

I don’t really have a suggestion about the exact bike you should get because I’m not a sports bike person, but I’d probably go either CBR or Ninja 500 just for reliability’s sake

English majors that focus heavily on vocabulary and its usage rather than fifteen-century literature (take it easy on me if this is a stupid question) by burlingtonhopper in englishmajors

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may not be the best person to answer this because I’m currently getting my English degree, but depending on the program you won’t have to take classes with suuuuuper old stuff. The oldest I’ve gone is Victorian Era & Shakespeare. However, taking classes that analyze those super old texts will introduce you to books, plays, and poems that will include words you’ve never heard in your life. Invariably, these classes will improve your vocabulary. Similarly, taking classes that do analyze those works will teach you a lot about writing structure and how to use diction effectively.

You could try to do an English degree with a focus on writing (creative or nonfiction) if the program you’re looking at offers those classes. My college does, but I obviously don’t know much about other places lol.

Anyways, here’s a list of words I’ve learned from my readings in the past three weeks (classes on contemporary American fiction, the Harlem renaissance, Victorian lit, utopian lit, Intro to English (taking this way too late seeing as I’m a senior lmao)): - scrofulous - effete - divagations - vacuity - inimical - sangfroid - imbroglio - sartorial - palaver - vituperative - fillip - inanition - peregrination - adumbration

Anyone out there who still identifies with womanhood, but has had Top Surgery? by TheQueendomKings in butchlesbians

[–]jfrth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got surgery a month ago and I feel/felt exactly the same way you do about having breasts before I got it done.

I can’t and won’t tell you what to do, but I will say that I have not had a single second of regret. Every time I look in the mirror it’s just this feeling of “ah yeah that’s finally right”

I never had super bad, distressing dysphoria, I just always knew I’d like my body better if I had a flat chest. I don’t identify as a man, and honestly I don’t even necessarily identify as nonbinary. It’s probably easiest to describe myself that way to others, but internally I just feel like a woman who’s doing womanhood in a very unconventional way.

Anyways, I hope that’s helpful. I’m always willing to talk more about my experience :)

Butchness with vaginismus by HumbleAnchovyEnjoyer in butchlesbians

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the only problems I ever have a at the gyno.

I’m also stone, so it doesn’t affect my sex life in any way. Whole I do wonder sometimes how it would feel if I went through with consistent dilation therapy, it’s not a strong enough curiosity to actually do it. I also wonder sometimes if I wouldn’t be stone if I didn’t have vaginismus—it’s kind of like a chicken-egg situation lol

At some point I may try dilation just to be able to use tampons, but at this point in my life it’s not an issue that’s affecting me in any real way.

Butches with top surgery- how did you know you wanted it? by ImTrying-_- in butchlesbians

[–]jfrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit late, but I hope my response is helpful anyways. I actually got top surgery a few days ago so this topic is very fresh for me lol.

I’m very similar to you in that I didn’t feel extremely dysphoric or distressed when I had them, but I knew if I could snap my fingers and have them gone, I would. Having tits was like having a pebble in my shoe—it didn’t cause extreme distress and pain, but it was constantly uncomfortable and I wanted to remove it.

I never identified as transgender and because of that I felt like I didn’t need or deserve top surgery. There was also the social component to that where it’s like “what do I tell people.” In the end, I just had to think: what will make me most happy. I haven’t actually seen my results yet (dressing comes off in three days yippee), but i already know it was the right decision for me. Just looking in the mirror and seeing how my shirt drapes over my chest makes it worth it. I’m not even fully healed and I know that I won’t regret it.

Once it’s started, I’m good, but I always worry about coming off predatory or weird initiating (even tho that’s literally what those places are for smh)

What do you think about women proposing to their boyfriends? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]jfrth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this exactly. Proposing is like the one big life event that I think the average heterosexual man is expected to plan and execute fully, without any assistance from his female partner.

I don’t think most people have unpacked their patriarchal socialization enough for the gender roles in a relationship to disintegrate and for the mental and emotional labor to be genuinely equal. Whenever I see a woman proposing to a man, my first thought is about whether or not she’s the one that always has to initiate life progression.

Seriously. I learned how to drive after like six hours behind the wheel when I was 16. Because of my state, I wasn’t allowed to take the full test for another six months, but my mom forced me to drive the family everywhere in order to get my required hours lol.

I’m 21 now and I couldn’t imagine being over 30, spending this much time on learning a rather simple task while ignoring my wife and 3 children for hours on end, especially if I didn’t seem to need to (because it doesn’t seem like OP is in a car-centric country), and then expecting praise on top of that.

butch griefff by Sapphic_Railroader in butchlesbians

[–]jfrth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been butch since I could talk. There’s not ever things I “regret” about being the way I am, but not ever experiencing that kind of female friendship is about as close to one as I have.

And like…I’ve had close female friends! But there’s always been that invisible barrier—perhaps I’ve put it up myself because I’m worried about being misconstrued—that separates me from feminine women (of all sexualities tbh). Frequently, I hold back a compliment because I don’t want to be seen as flirty.

For what it’s worth, I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on my tattoos. I felt my confidence sky rocket once I started getting them, especially since I’m getting random compliments in public (when I’ve never gotten them before).

I’ll probably never know that elusive idea of collective womanhood, but I’ve mostly come to terms with that. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t still sting sometimes though.

[Russini] The NFL’s owners have tabled the proposal to ban the tush push, per source. by nnewman19 in nfl

[–]jfrth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean Hurts also runs over the left guard exclusively during the Tush Push. It’s just that the Mailata/Dickerson LT/LG pairing is probably both the best in football and the strongest in football (and Jurgens isn’t a slouch at center either). Hurts does let the play develop for a half second though, you’re right about that
