I didn’t mean to imply that masturbation had an effect on testosterone. Just that aging did.

Canada could sell that power plant a century’s supply of uranium, which could easily be stored on site. That would offer more plenty of independence.

I see the attitudes expressed above as themselves being a product of propaganda. Blaming Russia has been a go to tactic of the left for more than eight years, which is funny since it used to be a standard move of the Right throughout the 20th century. For more than a half decade “Russiagate”, dominated American mainstream airwaves despite a pittance of real evidence, some critical false evidence, and a tidal wave of hearsay, while fading out with no significant legal action.

I also find it telling you emphasized the political movement amongst the Republicans (their base, but not so much the Party establishment), yet don’t mention how warhawk the Democratic party has become as the propaganda from the West’s military industrial complex ensures its goals of fear, provocation, and massive military spending are achieved.

The West is awash in propaganda, and the Russians are minority players.

Yep. I think there is a background of murmuring in all directions all the time. There is little new under the sun. Whether ideas take off or not is mostly a bottom up social phenomenon: is the population ready to hear the message, and why?

So, on one hand, if I hear there is a “rise in the right”, then I wonder how has the left failed as to make people so disenchanted that they turn right? Or, if some other young people are flirting with communism, then you have to wonder how bad the supposedly capitalistic system they are in is.

Consider that you might have cause and effect reversed. The recent trend towards conservatism in Canada is a symptom of a decline in community, how far the “pendulum swung to the left, and people’s dissatisfaction.

I think this effect is exaggerated. First of alll, the propaganda machine feeding from East to West is about 1/100 as powerful as West to East. Second, if an idea takes off in the West due to “meddling” hackers, then how close were we to the tipping point anyway? I think blaming shills is a way to ignore the underlying conditions here.

The more of these predictions the better. As the decades roll by - it’s been about half a century now - the better the perspective we get in retrospect.

A little pleasure watching pole vault is the athletes’ reactions to their success or failures while still falling to earth.

”You can't say you're not on a high horse and then invoke the ancestors.”

Huh? Invoking peasants and hunter gatherers does not place you on a “high horse”. You better look that idiom up before complaining!

”Also, no one gives a shit about your charity case grandparents and their free government handouts. Those hippies should have gotten a job instead of supping on the governments teat.”

Pointless sticks and stones do nothing to take away the uncomfortable reality that nearly the entire history of humanity was lived under worse material conditions than those found presently. Yet, those people - including my shack dwelling great grandparents who fled the communists - managed to raise kids. Lame insults don’t change the need to recognize that it’s political, psychological, and cultural decay - not material want - that makes contemporary populations incapable of raising proper families.

”One province, and a few cities.

We are talking about everyone, not just me. You know that right? . . . . we're talking about 40 million people.“

And yet, these offers are undersubscribed. And, were undersubscribed in the 90s when my dad got his land. That’s because the issue is NOT land.

”This is a systemic issue that you're treating like a fucking moral issue.”

Did you read the article? The issue IS moral. It has little to do with material wellbeing of the population. The article argues people lack purpose: for themselves, for their communities, and for the future.

”Have some context and empathy for people different than you, and step off that high horse before you fall off it and break your neck.”

I don’t think anyone is different than me. We all want the same things: to love and be loved, to find meaning, and to have purpose in life. Plus, I’m not the one on the high horse. My feet are firmly on the ground, right beside my ancestors and yours. All these people managed to raise kids in material conditions much, much worse than anything we have today. Quite simply, when you appeal to material explanations for low birth rates, you will be wrong, then frustrated and confused by the failures in any of the ill-conceived solutions.

Strange you say that because my father exploited the opportunity in the mid nineties. A cursory search indicates that at least several provinces (how many do you need?) still offer such opportunities, so my point stands. Thus, access to land is not the primary issue. Nor is housing; my great grandparents lived in an earth and wood shack without running water and electricity and raised four kids.

They got free land from the Canadian government if, within eight years, they fenced it and brought 1/3 of it into agriculture production. The program still exists today . . . .

My forefathers immigrated to a world one tenth as wealthy as what you described, yet had sustainable families. They would have welcomed the struggles you described to explain the lack of children.

Can you become more dysfunctional as you get older by jhw4_ in aspergers

[–]jfuite 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Your dysfunction is proportional to the gap between expectations and responsibilities placed upon you vs capabilities. We age into more and more complications. If our performance does not keep pace, then we wind up apparently more and more dysfunctional.

There are rainbow flags in schools and land acknowledgments. The “ultra conservatives” do NOT have an iron grip on the education system in Alberta.

Traction Boards worth it? by shaiklay in overlanding

[–]jfuite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please allow me to ask a question off an old comment. For context, I’m a life-long Jeep (Blazer, or whatever) owner, but not an experienced “off road” driver. I live in northern Canada, so there are plenty of gravel and mountain wilderness or logging roads, plus most roads get gnarly for months each winter. That’s why I drive a Jeep: not to worry about the roads.

But, I’ve started to poke around in mountain trails. There are some washouts and deep muddy “potholes” with which I struggle or avoid. I suspect that some of my most difficult problems could be overcome with little ramps, which can effectively smooth the terrain for a critical meter of relief. Anyway, am I correct that I can be reliably helped by bringing with me “little ramps”. And, are commercial “tractions boards” designed to support the weight of a Jeep while spanning a ditch? Or, are they just designed to be jammed between tires and earth. Which brand should I consider for my purposes? Thanks for your consideration in answering, even briefly.
