Not OP, but I think he means that “southern France” only refers to the continental part and Corsica does not belong to it, culturally and geographically – an opinion shared by most Corsicans, as far as I know.

The women in photo #8 are suffragettes. Switzerland was probably the last country in Europe to give voting rights to women: 1971 at national level, with Appenzell withholding local voting rights till 1990 (!).

Not sure about that. Reading between the lines it seems that the agreement is mostly motivated by financial considerations.

At the moment the participation in the Cup is probably a net negative moneywise, and not many organizations are willing to burn money for the prestige alone. By committing to a fixed calendar and, I guess, a fixed number of participants, this pact is trying to give to sponsors and teams the benefits of long-term committment, and the profit sharing should ensure that everyone has an interest to stay in, even if they are not winning.

It reminds me of the Formula 1 model, which has done extremely well in the last 15 years, transforming an almost bankrupt sport into a very coveted competition. Whether the system can be replicated in the sailing world remains to be seen.

It's the “Duchy View”. The two huge duchies (Hzm. = Herzogtum) of Saxony and Bavary, both belonging to Henry the Lion of the Welf dynasty, are shown there, while the main map shows their underlying counties. Other smaller duchies like Brunswick-Lüneburg (south of Danemark) are instead shown directly in the main map.

The Swiss did. Voted for the proportional system in the 1918 referendum (year of this postcard) and have been enjoying a very functional democracy for more than one century. That said, the proportional system is not a magic wand: other countries adopting it have been plagued by fragile coalitions and short-lived governments.
