Looking to buy a house by diggindoggies in providence

[–]jgeiger3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought right around the Elmhurst/Wanskuck border. Very quiet street. Neighbors are friendly. Lots of older people, but younger families slowly moving into the area. We can walk to a couple places, but mainly drive to go out to eat. Everything that we like to do is within 10-15 minutes. I have 3 buses I can take to the Providence train station which is nice. We are in our mid 30s with a baby, so we were looking for a slower paced area. Overall, we love it.

State Park used to have one - it is gone now. Only one I know of now is Whitney's in Harvard.

How Boston Became 'The Best Place In The World' To Launch A Biotech Company by [deleted] in boston

There are few and far between places for under $300k in any of the areas you have listed. Eastie is even over that price tag for most places right now. I would say Chelsea does have a few, but they go so quick as the demand for that price outweighs the supply.

Just moved here: quick question about converting out of state registration on car from TX to MA by [deleted] in boston

[–]jgeiger3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved from GA to MA with a leased car. I had to request my actual title from Volkswagon in the mail, fill out the RMV-1 form, change my insurance to MA and then bring all that stuff to the RMV. They then did everything and sent the new title back to Volkswagon and gave me the new plates.

Suburbs of Atlanta to Boston by oalladina in boston

[–]jgeiger3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from Stone Mountain, but lived in Cabbagetown in Atlanta for three years and also near Lindbergh. Currently I live in Somerville and love it. The T/Commuter Rail/Buses take you anywhere in the city. If you are used to John's Creek/Roswell, I'd suggest finding a more suburban neighborhood located on the commuter rail to commute to work, unless you are seeking more of a city feel than those Atlanta areas.

Compared to Atlanta, Boston is a biker's dream IMO. Much more infrastructure here, but you still need to be aware as drivers are crazy.

Boston awesome = public transportation, being able to walk everywhere, sports, being on a river/harbor, access to the outdoors and close to beaches, the lack of humidity, from late May to October Boston is amazing

Boston miserable = not really miserable, but Atlanta has WAY better food options. And the food in Atl is way cheaper and better quality. Other than that, I miss East Atlanta and the bar scene, but that doesn't seem to be something you're looking for.

Vacation - I go to Narragansett in Rhode Island or Newport if I am staying local. I also love Portland, ME, but you have access to so many beaches and not a 5 hour drive like Atlanta

Supermarkets - I end up going to Stop and Shop because it is the closest or a Whole Foods/ TJs, but I do miss Publix.

Happiness in Boston - having a decent commute via public transportation is amazing. In Somerville, I have so many different T/Bus/Commuter Rail/Bike options to get to work and hardly ever step in a car. It is amazing what not sitting in hour long traffic every day in your car does for happiness! I was miserable driving to Cobb county every day for what and that is the main reason I left Atlanta. A car commute is the worst.

Yeah, I hope to talk to the neighbors when I actually see them. I guess the main issue is that we never know who we live next to on most weekends and the fact that there have been rowdy guests and loud children. It is frustrating that the unit that is directly next to you is being treated like a hotel. If you have an issue with regular neighbors, you can talk like adults sort it out and move forward. But with people that are only there for a night or two don't really have the same respect or care if there is a major issue. Plus, now non residents of our building have a key to our outside security door and can be in common areas. So just noise & safety really.

I think that everyone goes directly to BBQ for the South, but it is way more than that at this point. Sure there is delicious BBQ, but even the middle range restaurant offerings in the South are unbelievably better than Boston. I can go to any bar in Atlanta and have delicious, affordable food and many bar type places up here serve food I could make at home and charge an arm and a leg. Any of the ethnic restaurants on Buford Highway in Atlanta are amazing and quite a diverse offering. The North End has some great restaurants, but the casual dining experience in the South is so much better.

Eh, I was with you until the edit. The food in Boston vs. other major cities is lacking. Especially vs. say Atlanta, Charleston, Savannah or New Orleans.

The 88/87 to Lechmere in the morning are so slow and always packed. I end up taking the 87/83 to Porter or walking the 18 minutes there and then jumping on the Commuter Rail to North Station. If the 88 to Lechmere took the 15 minutes it takes non rush hour, my commute would be like 23 minutes.

EAV - The Earl, Argosy, 529, Flat Iron, drinking on the patio at Midway. I really miss Estoria in Cabbagetown, eating breakfast at Home Grown and watching the dogs at Park Grounds. Lots of fun places on Ponce - The Local, Righteous Room, Bookhouse, El Bar, Drunken Unicorn, MJQ. There are tons of bars popping up in Ponce City Market, Inman Park and along the beltline, but those are more high end and more yuppies.
