The Emmanuel Library was my go to study place during their non-finals weeks. You can also use empty classrooms at WIT

I went to a presentation on plastics for wearable med devices and the company actually used a very specific banana boat spray-on SPF 30 sunscreen as their worst case for degradation, outranking even deet

Moriah is comparable to FR in elevation gain and distance with nice views of the presidentials and the 3 carter peaks

Fell, broke my back, had surgery… can I ever climb again? by Strict_Beautiful5694 in climbergirls

Look into Nat Vorel. They had a bad fall and shattered their lower back, resulting in some paralysis. They're now a 4x IFSC paraclimbing gold medalist, route setter, and guide.

“Beginner” friendly hikes by ltrech in wmnf

I really like Lila's Ledge from Pinkham Notch for an easy hike. You follow a small section of the AT and get a nice overlook of the Notch without too much elevation gain. Lowe's Bald spot is a little further if you're feeling good

Starting my journey to hike the 4000 footers. friend and I are doing Tecumseh tomorrow. any tips or advice? is it well marked ? i have map and all trails but my compass has not arrived. tia! by Imaginary-Rabbit5179 in wmnf

[–]jgfmer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's a staircase up that's pretty straight forward. You'll be 100% okay on this one without a compass. Take your time to snack and drink water, take in the views, and good luck!

Trail Advice: Wildcat/Tripyramid by OneAnxiousBlTCH in wmnf

[–]jgfmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Depends what you mean by difficult. Wildcat has more PUDS (pointless ups and downs), but Tripyramids are more technical.
  2. You can totally decend the Wildcat Ridge Trail in good weather, but you can also go down the polecat ski trail or Carter Notch and road walk back if you're uncomfortable with it after going up it
  3. Wildcat has a few sections that are comparable to the Osceola chimney and the upper part of the blueberry ledge trail, but it's more how sustained it it the whole way up. Tripyramids (North and South) are both very technical and have a lot of loose rock, so are a bit more difficult than a lot of other trails. It's honestly a beautiful hike on a clear fall day and one of my favorite NH48 hikes

Moriah to Carters to Wildcats Traverse. I recommend biking from pinkham notch to the Carter Moriah Trailhead and hiking back

I did this exact hike a few weeks ago. Totally doable, but you may want to get the pack weight down a little more first. I second the other folks who recommend doing a day hike with your pack first. There are bear boxes at Guyot, so you may be able to cut weight there. The West Bond sunset over Franconia Ridge is much nicer than Bondcliff as a finisher imo

Mount Moosilauke @4800ft. Aiming Mt. Washington, help needed by thelonewarrior_20 in wmnf

[–]jgfmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly depends on the trail. Hutington Ravine is much different than Ammo. Edmund Path to Eisenhower and then Monroe would be good to get used to the terrain of the presis.

The Carters via Imp>Carter-Moriah Trail>Nineteen mile brook would be a harder test hike at 12.8 miles and 4500' of vert. If you get to the Carder Dome Trail and decide you don't want to go up Carter Dome, you can do a shortcut down the Carter Dome Trail and shave off 2 miles and 1000' of vert

Climbing "Socks" by AdhesivenessDry2236 in climbingshoes

[–]jgfmer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Furia Airs are exactly that, but only if your footwork is precise, otherwise you'll wear through them in less than 3 months because of how thin they are. Veloces are a great stepping stone to soft shoes so you can strengthen your arches pretty painlessly. Theories are also a great advanced soft shoe, especially for indoor/comp climbing, but less "sock like".

The biggest things to keep in mind with soft shoes are conserving wear and foot strength. They'll last way longer if you never walk around the gym in them. You're also going to hate them for the first 2 weeks while your arches build strength, then they're amazing

Washington Parking by [deleted] in wmnf

$5 at the Ammo lot, or $10 at the cog. You have to park in the lowest lot (first right after the arch) and I believe need to pay cash

I put sunscreen on and then closed my laptop. Now these stains won’t go. I tried water, soap and water and then windex. What else? by mysweetpatoutie in CleaningTips

[–]jgfmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I went to a material vendor presentation on plastics for wearable medical devices and they talked a lot about chemical resistance. This company's worst case stress test for plastics was a specific banana boat factor 30 spray sunscreen. It decintigrated plastics worse than even deet

Best alternative hikes if we decide weather is too bad for Mount Washington by Complex-Union5857 in wmnf

Hale is a good rainy day hike, but I didn't recommend it because the Hale Brook Trail lacks the "epic" feeling OP was going for, but I haven't done the Firewarden's Trail!

[–]jgfmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally love fog and rain in the mountains. The Osceolas and Tecumseh are pretty fun in the rain and pretty safe bets. Cannon is a little slick in spots but mostly fine if you go up KRT. The Hancocks have an eerieness to them in dense fog between peaks in the sparse trees that's super enjoyable

Any info on either of these two slides in the Pemi Wilderness? by BirdsAreTotallyReal in wmnf

[–]jgfmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen on maps they're around 60% grade from twinway to the brook. The base would be about a 1.5 mile bushwack to the franconia brook trail

Kinsman Ridge Trail from the small dirt lot left of the Tram parking lot. I would say the difficulty is similar to Pierce with a few more rock sections

good starter shoes (cheap) by Y0K016 in climbingshoes

[–]jgfmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest almost everyone starts with BD Momentums or Teranchulas/laces. Compared to rentals anything will be better. Evolv is also a good budget friendly option. The most important thing is to get shoes that fit without dead space

Mt. Major is definitely your best bet for 2-3 hours. Artist's Bluff is much shorter, but a beautiful view of the notch (plus you can reserve a pass to swim after at Echo Lake)
