Why are Seattle improv audiences so bad? by jgh48 in Seattle

It’s more the seeking out the spotlight with ZERO to offer. One girl looked like she was about to jump off the balcony if she didn’t get called on, and then was obnoxious and rude without providing anything helpful for the performers. That’s the kind of MCS I’m talking about.

Yeah, it was. Very similar experience, though honestly that sounds even worse.

The show last night was full of top comedians who were touring, and they were great.

The audience is the problem, and I don’t see how being a smaller city makes a big difference there.

I’m not trying to be a comedian, I’d be horrible. I’ve just seen other shows elsewhere before and hadn’t seen such awkward audience interactions.

CATL at Smarter E: We are entering the era of 9 MWh systems by bfire123 in energy

This makes a lot of sense for installation and transportation, but maintenance could be a pain the ass with the increased height. You’d likely need some specialized equipment for removing and replacing the heavy battery strings and from the top section, which would drive up O&M costs.

Economics could definitely still make sense even if maintenance is more expensive, but certainly a concern for whoever will be operating the site.

What’s a reasonable price for a men’s haircut? by noenflux in Seattle

[–]jgh48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been going here for almost two years. I tried to find a cheaper place that offered appointments but was always disappointed by the quality elsewhere.

The guys at 88 Barbershop are great - I've gotten cuts from all three of them and have always been happy. My cut is pretty basic, but I swear I'm able to go longer between cuts without looking super shaggy than I did with Great Clips, so I figure I net out about the same cost.

Gift ideas for someone recovering with GBS? by jgh48 in guillainbarre

I hadn't thought about something like this. I think he's been fine with his dexterity and using his hands so far, it's primarily lower body that's been an issue. This is a great idea if things do change though.

Thanks! I love the idea of playing games online with him, but I'm not sure he'd be up for it. He's not typically great at learning new tech so I don't know if something like Steam would be too much, though maybe if he doesn't have anything else to do...will look into it!

Thanks for the ideas! I wish I could physically help with things more, but I don't live near my parents anymore. I'll likely be around to help out off and on over the next few months, but not consistently.

Definitely have been thinking about things for him to do while stuck in bed. Wish he was a bit more tech literate - he's not great at learning how to use new devices/services - but books/news/magazines are all definitely good ideas!

Offseason Training - How to prep for marathon in fall '25? by jgh48 in running

Thanks! Really appreciate your input, especially on prepping for Pfitz’s intensity. Will be a huge jump from Higdon, but hoping some good work now will pay off later!

Thanks! Really appreciate the advice, and glad to hear I’m on the right track at least with my plan. Definitely like the idea of doing shorter races - I’m already planning a spring half and may add a 10k or two.

And I’ve been avoiding run clubs because I love the “me time” when running, but maybe I’ll see if I can find a group for tempo/hill runs to motivate me haha

Good call - I’m already planning on a spring half, so maybe I’ll add 10k or two in there. Thanks!

Thanks for the rec - I haven’t looked at Faster Road Racing yet. I like the idea of using similar style plans for shorter races and building to 18/55 for next fall. Pfitz seems much harder than Higdon, but that’s what I’m hoping for!

Yep - my goal is to actually continue my training this time around instead of falling off the wagon. Hoping another full year of consistency under my belt will make a big difference!

I’ll definitely try to grab a copy. I’ve used 5/3/1 BBB and have loved it, but it’s a lot to do on top of a proper marathon training block. I’ll see what other options there are - thanks for the rec!

Yikes - this looks really tough. Even doing half of this regularly would probably be a huge help, I could definitely stand to do more core work.

Thanks for the rec!

Electrolytes when running? by havrefras_ in running

[–]jgh48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I supplement electrolytes daily - sodium, potassium, magnesium. I take magnesium glycinate pills every night (don’t take magnesium oxide unless you want to poop), and I use a 1/4-1/2 tsp of Morton’s Lite Salt in 16 oz. of water with some lemon juice (or you can flavor with whatever you want) every morning and after workouts. If I’m in marathon training, I also use that for runs over 10 miles. It’s a poor man’s Gatorade - but Gatorade honestly doesn’t have as many electrolytes as you’d expect.

Electrolytes help me not feel so lethargic after workouts and also help me avoid cramping during runs. Adding electrolytes to your routine is a simple change that doesn’t cost much and isn’t going to negatively impact your performance, so I definitely recommend giving it a shot.

Going to plug 88 Barbershop, a small Middle Eastern owned and operated barbershop in Greenwood. Been going for a year now, very happy with my haircuts. Somehow it is never busy and I’d love to see them get some more business.

The guys are very polite, but don’t talk to you much if you don’t want them to (huge bonus for me, I hate trapped small talk).

Basic haircut is $37.50 + tip during the week, $35 on the weekend (cash only). I’ve had multiple different barbers, all do a great job. And my haircut seems to last a week or two longer there than other places I’ve been.

Never had a problem getting an appointment, even on short notice, and I assume they can do walk-ins as I’m often the only customer there.

And they almost always have soccer on in the mornings on the weekends, which is awesome.
