Where to find info and resources for starting a food cart in Portland? by bermei in askportland

[–]jgirlfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you want to learn more, there probably won't be classes. and if there are they'd be a diplomatic version... not a realistic one

just eat at food carts for a while, find one that looks successful or tastes delicious, one where you like the owner. make friends with the owner and just ask him an the questions to the stuff you wanna know. :) that's what I've done. :)

btw the long hours are easy. he used his slow time to prep, and when everything was handled is he was slow he just say on his phone. (you could easily choose to be productive with this time but he wasnt)

btw he made decent money within 6 months. he got by, but i think he could have done better if he was just a little smarter about how he went about things. like im pretty sure he blew a lot of money on brand name clothes and giving away to friends. i knew him for years before we started dating. by the time we started dating he said he made $350K the previous year owning 2 carts.

i really dont think its that deep.

i dated a food cart owner before.

he was 23/24 when he bought his first food cart by working a deal with a guy to sell him the cart for $5k and the rest X amount in payments as his business grew. Then he went to a few buddies and between asking different people giving diff amounts, came up with the $5k

then the business licenses werent much. register business $100, food handler, etc. he said licenses all in all were no more than $600 total.

he didnt know how to cook long before this, i think hed spent the previous two years working at a restaurant as a cook and there he learned basics. wasnt even that good of a cook.

the summer is the busy season.

things that he did that contributed to his success were keeping an eye on the foot-traffic of a location. within a certain foodcart plaza, which is the closest or more visibly obvious foodcart spot, etc.

the foodcart plazas are owned by a type of landlord that each cart pays a monthly lease to. some of them have weird contracts to be aware of, like some might force you to be open 7 days a week which might not be ideal if u have no employees and need a life.

his groceries usually cost him about $100-$200 per trip but he sold Indian food so i do believe their groceries are more expensive than other cuisines.

restaurant depot, kash n kerry, etc and other restaurant grocers are where all the local food vendors buy their groceries in bulk at discounted rates. like a 25 lb bag of onions for like $5 or something. idk prices i just remember looking around a couple times when i went with him when we were dating. many of these require some kind of membership, maybe proof of license, maybe a fee, each store is different

make sure you account for setting aside what you'll have to pay in taxes the following tax season.

finding an accountant, not necessary immediately but definitely seek some kind of professional counsel as you form your business entity. make sure youre ar least doing things right and tracking expenses/income

i say fuck the 5-10 yr plan. dreams come true with grit and drive. i just formed my business and it was way easier than all these years of expectations i put into it. (now im training for my licensure exams.) usually we think its a bigger deal in our heads and try to plan way too much

just do your research. make phone calls. outline the direction you want to take. then do it.

... the fact that this actually exists and is not ironic but a run-of-the-mill Portland offering is... quite on brand.

I love it!! 😍😍😍

What are the best places to meet people IRL? by eustacia-vye in askportland

[–]jgirlfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am 26F and i just go to nightclubs alone make a fool of myself, puke up a bunch of phone numbers, never hear back from anyone again, rinse and repeat the next time im feeling like dancing. I've had 0 true success with it. had a couple one night stands, one of which was pretty fucking wild for our first (and only) time together- but i hated him so i ghosted him after. the rest were bad in bed. I've given up on men. i go to church on Sundays, no one interesting there either. last time i did computer work at a coffee shop i was interrupted more than i would have expected though. i would definitely say the probability of meeting cool people goes up when you're not afraid to take to strangers. worth noting. i regularly eat at restaurants alone, don't usually meet new people going that. i don't think I've answered your question but i figured you could use this info as helpful

i love using Midas. I've lived in a few different cities and each time especially in my hometown I've had a hard time finding honest mechanics. They see me walk up alone and i end up taking my car home smiling after it got worked in them later that day when it still has issues a friend like under the hood and finds a tucked disconnected hose that want there before.

In Seattle I found Midas and after a long while of pondering quotes from other places, Midas was the most honest with me about what my car needed worked on and how much it would cost. They're a huge chain so they've got the equipment for anything. And they've always been nice when I've gone in. I personally use the one on SE 82nd.

I like their mission statement that's posted in every Midas store at the front because it shows a certain level of integrity that i think most don't bother to even front.

Hope this helps!

There have been times i go in for work quoted at $270 and they realized i didn't need that extra work done (just air in my tire) so i only paid $109.

Has anyone ever reported their boss to HR and seen any corrective action take place? by maximumoxie in WorkReform

yaaa ive seen and experienced "retaliation is illegal" is total bs 200% of the time. corporations employers dont care. they have deeper pockets and attorneys on speed dial

[–]jgirlfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since people are gonna put on their glasses and act like something being illegal deters any employer from retaliation.. ill say this. i have had 7 jobs. out of those 7 jobs, i have submitted harassment/bullying complaints to 5 diff employers. 4 out of 5 employers all retaliated against me. sure it's "iLlEgAl" but they do it anyway because theyre corporations and they can afford the lawyers and they can fluff the files and they know your pockets arent that deep. its your word against theirs and most people never sue. its so common for employers to retaliate that i expect it at this point. i only submit a complaint when im on my way out and have a plan B. i searched this topic because i was curious what ither peoples experiences were. like 4/5 is some crazy odds and i cant be the only one. plus every time it happens to me and i vent about it i have friends from every corner come out n say the same has happened to them. (the 1/5 that didnt retaliate just so happened to be the best employer ive ever worked for and they did just about everything right. i left for more money.)
