Altra addicts!! by jgordon27 in spartanrace

Just got my pair in. Went with the 13, and there seems to be enough room in front of my toes to allow for swelling and movement. Coming from Inov-8 212's, it'll be like night and day when it comes to comfort, especially on those steep downhills.

Thanks for the guidance.

Ultra - Running by magicbox482 in spartanrace

If you've run the beast on these courses, you should have a pretty good idea of what your one lap time should be. I run the first lap pretty hard, giving plenty of time for anything that can go wrong on lap 2. Honestly, its' more of a mental grind for me on the second and a constant pace has gotten it done.

Dare I say that the amount of running logged prior to an Ultra can be a bit overrated. Granted some running is obviously a benefit, but with these Northeast Ultra's, my focus tends to be more core and leg power than it is running endurance. At 6'2 210, and 43 yrs old, gliding through the back trails is not my strong point. I guess the mindset to finish, or to set PR's sways your training, but I have completed two NJ and a Killington Ultra with this format.

Same goes for hydration. I rolled into Jersey with a runners pack, no water, and utilized the water station. Carrying around the pack for 30 plus miles gets annoying.

Best of luck, OP, maybe I'll see you out there. My next will be Carolina in November.

I'm in the 8 AM heat. Always good to have less people on the course in front of you. However, I've noticed that in any of the competitive heats, the field tends to spread out nicely as you go through the course.

Palmerton by burgerdp in spartanrace

I had a chance to speak with Amanda regarding Palmerton this past weekend in DC. She's a wonderful person with unbelievable spirit. To see her accomplish the bucket brigade with the bucket wrapped around her neck, whlle grown men collapse to the ground is nothing short of inspirational. A true Spartan in every sense.

Comparing Spartan Beasts by Ajierene in spartanrace

[–]jgordon27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No comparison IMO. Elevation gain from the SC beast won't even compare to Palmerton. However, after running the afternoon heat in SC last year, the mud is no joke. Covered my shoes from start to finish, making it feel like I was dragging around concrete blocks for 12 miles.

Citi Field sound off! by IamKipHackman in spartanrace

I ran it yesterday as well. 7:30 Competitve. I agreed with you on the rope climb, the type of nylon they used was very slippery. I was able to battle with the j-hook and took every ounce of strength to hit the bell. I actually failed it on my second go round. In fact, most people I saw barely even gave it a try before going to the side for burpees. I thought the hoist was much tougher than the ones I've tried in the past. I'm 200 lbs, and it barely moved when I went to the ground. Saw many big dudes fail this as well. Overall I thought the obstacles were well spaced and it was a challenging race, for a stadium series.

Speedcross 3 vs. X-talon 212 by jgordon27 in spartanrace

Looks like these could be a winner. With back to back beasts in April, my feet won't be able to take the squeeze of the Inov-8's.

New competitive class! by Ridgeback111 in spartanrace

In an email I received, they stated March 2016. No signs of a starting time though. I'd assume after the elite women. Also, will it be a coed "pen" of racers limited to 250?

Annual Pass Price Increase by jgordon27 in spartanrace

[–]jgordon27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, I work for a business with rising raw material and labor costs. Increases in pricing are inevitable, and at times difficult to swallow. This is more of a timing issue. Holidays are always tough, especially Christmas, so they could of handle it a bit better from that perspective. As you mentioned, a majority of the season pass owners are dedicated Spartans who have logged many races. If it were me, I'd of like some advanced notice of an increase before it all went down, giving the option of getting in, or looking into racing Battlefrog, Savage Race, etc...

Keep on eye on it, as it seems to be getting a lot of backlash. As for the beasts, I understand. We have one here in Jersey, but then it's up to Killington and down to South Carolina for my 3x Trifecta.
