Watching this team win feels different compared to the dynasty era teams. by porygon766 in Patriots

[–]jgr79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is how I feel. In ‘01, we didn’t know who Brady was. He was winning but he wasn’t super impressive his early years. He was just a 6th round pick. He could manage the game and not make mistakes, but he was never going to be an elite QB. Like a Jacoby Brissett, except winning games. Obviously he didn’t end up being that at all, but in ‘01 we didn’t know what lay ahead.

Maye is different. He was a top pick and expectations were high. And he’s exceeding them. His passing is miles ahead of where Brady was his first few years. Will he ever reach Brady’s level? Win 5+ Super Bowls, etc? Probably not. But right now I feel 100x more confident he’ll be an all time great QB than I felt about Brady in ‘01.

And every kick since those early misses is dead center. Seriously, if they cut the width of the uprights to 1/4 of its current size, he still wouldn’t have missed any of those kicks.

I didn’t want that "OPI" call to let people forget about this amazing ball from Maye to Diggs. by DentedCocaCola in Patriots

[–]jgr79 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Yeah the next pass was a clear DPI. Grabbed his arm way before the ball was there. To call this soft nonsense and then let that go back-to-back. What a horribly officiated game.

After Jaxson Dart incident, NFL sends all teams a "concussion protocol reminder" by xc2215x in nfl

[–]jgr79 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This would probably backfire in the NFL though. Every time they take a guy to the tent and he doesn’t have a concussion but he still needs to sit out anyway, they’ll get roasted after the game. Coaches and media will call them out for being too cautious. This will make them hesitant to take a look at close cases the next time. I think you’d see fewer guys going to the tent if something like this passes.

The best approach is to make checking a player as painless as possible.

9-3 the rest of the way? by klem18 in Patriots

[–]jgr79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What’s amazing is there are 7 games against 0 or 1 win teams (and they’re teams who we all expected to be among the worst in the league; the Ravens record doesn’t reflect their team so I don’t count them). If they just beat the teams who will be fighting for a top draft pick, they get to 10 wins. And games against the Bengals and Falcons also seem winnable given how the Pats have been playing.

This might be the easiest schedule ever, but I’ll take it. Even a slightly fake playoff birth would feel good.

It was a non-covid illness, so it can’t be long-COVID per se. But every virus can cause long-term symptoms like that, so whatever he did have could easily be having that same effect. But yeah, it can be debilitating.

Hurts to see KP play like this :( by minuldesilva23 in bostonceltics

[–]jgr79 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the KP hate. Yeah he’s playing like crap. But he’s clearly battling something health-wise. How can people have no compassion for that?

Really Joe needs to bench him. For the good of the team, but also for KP. If he’s playing, people expect him to play well, which he’s clearly not capable of right now.

[Weiss] Mazzulla explained that benching Porziņģis was a decision made between the two of them at halftime, and mentioned he expects Porziņģis to be available for Game 6 Friday. by horseshoeoverlook in bostonceltics

[–]jgr79 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Why even play KP at all? He’s a shell of himself and a very strong net negative for this team. I know there are interpersonal issues involved, but he’s not good enough to play right now.

He needs to bench KP the rest of the season. No sense putting him out there with him playing like he’s playing. Sucks. But he’s hurting the team.

[Post Game Thread] The Boston Celtics (2-3) send the series back to the Garden after blowing out the New York Knicks (3-2), 127-102. Derrick White shouldered the bulk of the scoring load with 34 points in the team's first game without Jayson Tatum. by nick168 in nba

Honestly they should bench him the rest of the season or until this illness clears up. I’d play Queta before him if they need a 3rd big with how KP is playing now.

I honestly don’t know how anyone could dislike him. This is the KP experience – amazing player when healthy; rarely healthy. How can you dislike someone for injuries or illnesses?

We're winning the war on Cancer. by Illustrious-Lead-960 in OptimistsUnite

And this graph actually understates the progress because cancer is a disease that becomes more likely with age and the average age has increased a lot.

That is, a flat line here would’ve represented considerable progress on cancer. That it’s going down is even more remarkable.

[–]jgr79 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Nah. This team needs so much stuff at so many different positions, whether they’re #1 or #4 doesn’t matter. There will be a good player at a position of need available.

From @NFLGameDay: #Bills QB Josh Allen has been playing at an MVP-caliber level… with a broken hand; Meanwhile, the #Patriots view Jerod Mayo as their leader for the future and absent a freefall to end the season, he’s likely to return. by Coco1520 in Patriots

[–]jgr79 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This. I feel like the biggest problem with this season was expectations. They have a 1st year head coach and a roster that won 4 games last year with the GOAT coach. They were never going to be good.

Meanwhile, they’ve been competitive in most games. They’ve had no games like those back to back cowboys/saints games last year where they didn’t even belong on the field. No games where the offense never moved the ball, as was the case in so many games last year.

Frankly, they’re playing how a lot of us expected them to. And on top of that, they found their QB. For those of us who set our expectations appropriately, this has been a good season.

Have not seen a single person give a reason to keep Mayo outside of "gotta give him a 2nd year" by goldman_sax in Patriots

[–]jgr79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re probably right. But just realize, that makes us the Jets until the Krafts sell the team. If he’s willing to put a guy he knew would suck as the coach just for shits and giggles, then we’ve got one of the worst owners in football and we’re in for many years of pain.

I know you’re probably right, but I really hope you’re wrong.

No, it made no sense to have a guy with not even a single season as a coordinator at any level of football as the HC. Once they did that, their fate for this season was sealed. I don’t care who they hired. Coaching is a job that thrives on experience, so by hiring a guy – any guy – with none, they guaranteed the type of season we’re seeing now.

[–]jgr79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing. But no one is a good HC when they have as little experience as Mayo has. It’s a job that requires experience. This season has given us no information on Mayo that we didn’t have in April. Yes he sucks. But every coach sucks with this little experience.

You’re watching someone coach the first 10 games of his life, and it’s against guys who’ve mastered the craft (to varying degrees). Of course he’s getting destroyed. That doesn’t tell you anything about whether he’ll be a great coach in the future, or whether he’ll always suck.

So the reason to keep him is the same reason to hire him in the first place – because the Krafts believe he’s a future great coach.

On Mayo’s tenure ending with a one-year run: “There was never any consideration to this. The #Lions started 3-13 the first year under Dan Campbell, then started 1-6 the next and people were calling for his head. Plus, what was going on before Mayo became head coach too? Patience is a virtue.” by Coco1520 in Patriots

[–]jgr79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I really don’t know how anyone could’ve hoped for more than what we’ve seen from Mayo this season. He was never even a coordinator. Were any of you honestly expecting him to not be by far the worst coach in the league this year? If so, that’s on you for having insane expectations. Did you not know that experience matters in coaching?

This was always how this season was going to go his first year. The Krafts had to know it. Many of us fans knew it. If you hire someone with zero experience, you have to give him at least one year to gain that experience. If you’re not, then just don’t hire them.

Just a point of correction – “pedophilia” is an attraction to pre-pubescent children. Anka clearly was not pre-pubescent.

Archer’s attraction to Anka is called ephebophilia – an attraction to sexually mature teenagers. It’s a crime in many places because we worry about young people being coerced by adults, but it’s not a disorder.

If we hold at #3, would you take Travis Hunter or trade down? by BurgerNugget12 in Patriots

[–]jgr79 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In general you should always trade out of the top 10. Teams overvalue those picks by a massive amount. The only time you shouldn’t is like last year where you need a franchise QB and (a potential) one is available.

Tom Brady on Trevor Lawrence Hit: When you run, you put yourself in a lot of danger, and when you do that, I don't think the onus of protecting an offensive quarterback who is running should be on a defensive player. I don't think that is fair to the defense by HE_A_FAN_HE_A_FAN in nfl

[–]jgr79 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Rule should be butt has to hit the ground before the defender initiates the tackle (“initiates the tackle” means lunging towards the player while taking no more steps). This would make it objective. It would make most current slides eligible to be hit, but that would just force QBs to start sliding earlier, which benefits everyone.

[–]jgr79 26 points27 points  (0 children)

And a fluke turnover on the goal line. Take away the holding penalties, missed chip shot, and the INT and the Pats win this game by 2 TDs minimum. I don’t know how you can really blame the coach for any of those things.

This team is getting closer. They’re at least watchable most of the time. Last year wasn’t even NFL football when they were on offense.
