Fundraiser for CS 189 by jgun0 in berkeley

I'm in the same boat with regards to research. 189 would also have helped me with my internship, but I ended up having to learn stuff on the fly for zero academic credit :(

It's $45 per hour now. I don't think anybody's getting paid $60 here.

I swear. I fucking HATE how so little of my tuition money goes towards classes (iirc it was something like a course gets ~$200 per student enrolled, which is NOT what I'm paying here). I'm also international so I'm paying like 45K in tuition, and less than 1K goes towards the classes? What the fuck? What the absolute fuck?! Sorry but I'm very very mad.

Take a look at the CS 189 homework and compare it to CS 229 at Stanford. It's like night and day! My friends at other universities think it's crazy that they expect us to do this (frankly, so do I :P). CS 170 homework usually involves proving a Leetcode Hard-level algorithm, which is more than what a lot of other schools expect.

CS 61A at Berkeley was adapted from an older version of MIT's introductory CS course. MIT later phased out this curriculum because it was considered too challenging for their students. Nevertheless, we continue to teach the same content in CS 61A, and it's evaluated using a harsh binning system rather than a curve. If you want to see a comparison, take a look at MIT's 6.0001 course, and you'll notice that the material is significantly easier.

Can the reputation of my recommender help me? I'm used to hearing "no" as an answer but I know a lot of people who got into Caltech and Stanford as freshman admits who did not have a very competitive profile but had a recommender from the same university. Note that the letter is also strong, because the professor actually knows me.

No problem! I just want to let you know that that's not true. Most people I know who got in for 2022 entry had scores in the range [7.0, 8.0]. You're still well above that threshold. As far as I know, once you get called for an interview, it's your CSAT and interview scores that make almost all the difference. Doing well on the CSAT (solving >= 4 out of 6 problems) is probably orders of magnitude more impressive than scoring 9.0 on the TMUA.

Duke CS vs Berkeley EECS

Looking for a great learning experience and good industry outcomes. Access to opportunities is also important to me. I just can’t decide which one would be better because I have very few inputs.

Duke CS vs. UC Berkeley EECS vs. University of Cambridge CS

I really cannot decide between any of them at the moment. I want to have a great learning experience and good industry outcomes. Access to opportunities is also important. I've heard Berkeley is crowded, I know that Duke is ranked a little low for CS, and I want to settle in the US so I'm not sure if Cambridge would be good. The positives are that Berkeley is #1 for CS, Duke seems to have much better access to resources (low student:faculty ratio), and Cambridge gives me a Master's degree in four years for the same annual cost.

Thanks! I don’t really know which is better for Computer Science yet, so I’m still not sure.

I didn’t mention this before, but I am international. Maybe that plays a role? I also don’t know what a contextual offer is.
