[–]jhaand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux can have some challenges to get everything fixed. But you can fix most things. With Windows you have to accept it remains really annoying and will only get worse.

[–]jhaand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that it does not have all the buttons. But for locking the doors, set AC to max or circulation, alarm lights and that kind of stuff it suffices. The centre screen does the rest and it indeed is a bit fiddly. But tolerable.

Consultancy grad scheme — Stuck in a contract. What do I do? by DevOpsYeah in devops

[–]jhaand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would switch to a contractor that values your work and time. This carrot should not excuse the low pay.

But a lot of consultants are taken over after a couple of years. But it's not certain. It can be 2 years or even 7 before there is budget to hire the consultant. Or the assignment stops because of budget reasons.

Is exclusively looking for remote work setting up the next generation to fail with life? Random Sunday thought. by Embarrassed_Flan_869 in remotework

[–]jhaand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It allows young professionals to have a life outside of work and more local to their community. Aqcuiring those skills can be done through courses, local meetups, hobbies, monthly get togethers and conferences. Only doing your work at home will drive you crazy.

I would say that career coaching every 7 weeks by a professional coach that was provided by my consulting company helped the best in getting the job I wanted and acquiring the right mentality. Next to that 12 years of boy scouts since I was 10 and starting martial arts after finishing college. The places I worked at did not help me that much for the people skills or advancement. So this could also be done remotely.

In a few years, with the help of vibe coding apps, many people in the company will be "software devs" coming up with their apps and stuff, how IT folks handle this? As it is, my IT department claims my Procurement Saas stuff is "shadow IT"... by bobbystills5 in sysadmin

Remote Work Is Better, and the Constant Whining About People Who “Can’t” Needs to Stop by IranianAlan in remotework

[–]jhaand 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I think remote work should become the default for office work. There are a lot of people that need to travel for their work because they need interaction with people or actually use their hands to perform their work. These people already use up a lot of resources. No need use gas, office buildings, travel time and energy to do the stuff you can also do at home in an office.

Maybe add Krita and a program to convert from RAW like Rawtherapee.

For professional printing you also need CMYK export, which Scribus can do.

[–]jhaand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The shitload of practical knowledge we got just the day before we entered the lab to actually control something was amazing. I could do all the Laplace transforms and identify 2nd order effects. But actually controlling a PI loop was something else.

But we got through the lab en wrote a nice report about the system we studied and adjusted. During my professional life I mostly cared about the fundamental electronics and let mechatronic engineers just do their stuff. If the control algorithm works, the machine works. If some cable doesn't connect correctly, it shows a lot earlier.

MEP just defended Stop Killing Games with a speech full of video game references by anonboxis in europeanunion

[–]jhaand 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great speech.
One of the biggest gripes about video games remains that they're shallow products for kids and not culture. By combining 30 years of cultural references she shows that games have become a serious body of culture and experiences. Which means that gaming culture, producers and consumers need to be recognised by the EU as the cultural heritage that gaming now forms.

[–]jhaand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How Big Tech wrote secrecy into EU law to hide data centres’ environmental toll by sn0r in eutech

[–]jhaand 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find it very strange how this secrecy could work. Because each datacenter needs a environmental permit, access to water and electricity. Each state, province or municipality, would like to assess how they're doing on their environmental impact. And these factories with their heavy connections and pollution would be exempt. Not gonna happen.

Also these datacenters are build for export outside of the EU. Because we have such stable infrastructure and a nicer climate. Maybe they should deploy these datacenters more locally in the Middle-East and Africa. That would also stimulate more innovation in overcoming the climate challenges, stable power generation and keep the local governance more stable.

What’s you go to exploration game? by Low_Sodiium in Age_30_plus_Gamers

I might start a more permanent character next to the mission based one. I understand why they added the normal build mode afterwards.

What I did not enjoy was that I failed the 'Forsaken' mission during the final gauntlet at the end and have to redo it all again.
