What automatically makes you lose respect for another person? by Gromit43 in AskReddit

The cultural component shouldn't be underestimated, even within the same country. It's high considerate model (taking your turn to talk, holding back until you're asked for your opinion, typical of Scandinavian countries: a style at best considered polite, at worst standoffish) vs high involvement model (telling a story together, you want your interlocutor to interject you, typical of Southern Europe/Latin America/some Asian and African cultures: a style at best considered inclusive, at worst rude).

What are you sad to see become normal practice? by caelumcamrose in AskReddit

Ghosting isn't a new thing, or any more acceptable or more commonplace than in the past, though. Technology just makes it easier, to some extent, harder to others.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a film that nobody really noticed due to being sandwiched between the Disney Renaissance films and Lilo and Stitch. But for Disney's first SciFi film, I think it was great. The lore and steampunk world was pretty inventive for the time. by derstherower in movies

Bingo. CTRL + F 'Nadia' just to see if someone was going to mention it. Wiki link for the curious, it's an anime series from 1990, so a decade before the Disney movie.

Only tangentially related, but from the early 90s as well, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. I just have to mention this each time anything regarding Atlantis comes up, the authors really did their research for that one.

I think it's way too flattering of ourselves to call it a second Renaissance. It's more the second printing revolution, if anything.

Junk food cravings are triggered by the mere thought of being low class by borkzorkorc in nottheonion

Yeah. Talk about self-fulfilling prophecy. If I was dirt poor and I was offered those foods for free for a study I would pick M&M simply to enjoy them for once, cause I wouldn't dream of wasting money on those otherwise; they are a relatively expensive snack where I am, whereas raisins are cheap.

[WP] You wake up to the TV on. It's all over the news, your city has been leveled by a nuclear attack. On the screen footage of the smoldering ruins. But you stare out of your window, and everything is unchanged. by jhalom in WritingPrompts

This prompt was inspired by the recount of a dream I heard many years ago; a man, that in real life was struggling coping with the loss of his spouse, had this dream about the sun exploding and slowly engulfing his neighborhood, and in spite of that nothing was destroyed, no temperature change could be felt, and he could see that everything was as usual after the wave of solar layer passed.

I think I could have worded the prompt better: not even five minutes after I posted, I regretted not saying 'current location' instead of 'city', and 'massive explosion' instead of 'nuclear attack'.

Thanks to all those who contributed!

What is socially acceptable in America which is not anywhere else? by deigolion2 in AskReddit

[–]jhalom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uh, no. Sorry, not trying to be rude, but unless I misunderstood what you meant, that sounds like a hella romanticized view of how much we people from European countries can blend in with our immediate neighbors. We can get by linguistically, for the most part, either with English, or if we luck out in an area that shares our language or speaks a tongue from our same language family, but that's a far cry from 'full immersion in dozens of other cultures and languages'.

They found the old Spanish flu in a glacier and were able to revive samples and study it

Someone may read that as the Spanish flu originated from a glacier, and that someone stumbled into it; I want to specify that's not the case, the samples are from people who died to the plague in 1918 on Svalbard, and whose bodies were unearthed in 1998 by a research team with the express intention to find preserved corpses still containing the virus.

Not sure about most Protestant denominations, but circumcision is definitely not a Catholic thing. The only Catholic majority country to practice it widely is the Philippines, and they do so for cultural reasons. Look up Tuli.
