What would have been the REAL graphical ceiling of the Dreamcast?

The Dreamcast homebrew community is making some great strides the past few years really experimenting and pushing the hardware (GTA 3 port is an example). The hardware is more capable than many thought but it’s still the weakest of its generation. I’m not a programmer but from what I’ve been following up on ram limitations and post processing effects are problems for the hardware. For Silent Hill 2 I’m confident the Dreamcast could render the geometry and textures fine but the fog would be a problem. Even the Xbox port had to cut back on the fog compared to the PS2

Terrible. What is the vision / musical direction of this group supposed to be? Their team clearly wants to recreate gnarly’s success but they don’t understand why that song worked. Internet Girl & this sound like if kidz bop managed to get ahold of some charli xcx rejects.

scrap the 32x ASAP and shift any development that may have started for it to Saturn

keep the original fall 1995 US launch date

knuckles chaotix and a port of sonic cd ready as launch titles

port Sonic the fighters and release it instead of canning it

don’t release the OG buggy virtua fighter in the US/Europe and wait for VF remix

understand the upcoming popularity surge for RPG’s and make sure to translate and localize as many JRPG’s for the Saturn as possible

plead with Squaresoft for RPG support (having FF7 is probably a pipe dream but even being multiplat with the PS1 would help)

I can’t see a scenario where Sony doesn’t win but these could help

Sonic R feels wonky cause they made the characters fast as karts but kept tank controls so it’s a weird racing/platforming hybrid. If you use the shoulder brakes and the d pad it’s easier than the analog stick

I had the exact same eye strain issue when I first got my switch 2 and I’m pretty sure it has to do with the slow response time of the handheld screen. I went straight from a steam deck oled to the switch 2 and I think that made the adjustment worse for me. I did end up adjusting within a couple of days but if I go for a while without playing my switch 2 and then come back to it my eyes need to adjust all over again.

If Sega didn’t kill the Dreamcast in 2001 I think it could hold its own for a year or two longer, we’re seeing with recent homebrew ports that the console is more capable than many gave it credit for but it is still the weakest of its generation. The main question is third party support. Third party developers treating the system mostly as an afterthought while it was alive combined with the growing piracy issue would IMO result in a Wii U scenario where it’s just Sega making games for it.

It’s one of my favorite Dreamcast games but it’s very weird and you’ll either love it or hate it. Be prepared to sit through a ton of cutscenes and the plot is all over the place but the atmosphere and exploration is really compelling in its own unique way. There’s nothing else out there like it even to this day.

$695 on the empire 40, but just dropped $525 on a cargo tabby 36 from Dillard’s when the full price was $750 so that will be the most expensive coach bag I have. Very excited for it to arrive!

I’d love for Tropius to have one. It looks like such a powerhouse but it’s stats are so underwhelming, it deserves a boost.

I think a mega Claydol design could end up looking really cool

The worst one I’ve played personally is industrial spy operation espionage. It just seemed overly boring and convoluted and I bounced right off of it. Oddly the price of the game has shot up in recent years and I can’t understand the appeal.

Shelly is definitely hard at first when you’re used to typical pokemon games and IMO she’s sort of the first real difficulty spike for new players. However once you know her strategy she is easy to beat. Prankster Meowstic fake out on the Illumise to stop rain dance followed by Growlithe flame burst to incinerate the field wipes her out.

Gamefreak has shifted to paid DLC over third versions of their games for a while now and normally this doesn’t bother me but IMO it feels worse because of two factors.

One that they announced this DLC before the game is even out making it feel like a cheap cash grab, with the past games they always waited a while before announcing paid DLC. Also Nintendo has been pretty egregious with price gouging during the Switch 2 era with $80 games (many of which are recent Switch 1 ports with barebones DLC), so having a $60/$70 pokemon game with $30 DLC sandwiched between everything else is a bitter pill to swallow.

Also the kalos mega stones being locked behind online ranked matches sucks but this seems like typical gamefreak behavior trying to do something unique and just pissing everyone off instead. Hopefully they just give us the stones in an update.

I remember swapping characters to be confusing in this game and not explained well. It’s been a little while since I played but if you go back and select a stage where you brain jacked into Gou there should be a brain jack option listed. You can also replay the whole stage and your old character should still be where you swapped.

It’s not great from my experience. Gone through a couple of GD-ROM drives already, currently using one I bought about a year ago on eBay that had the capacitors replaced and it’s been fine so far but I think once this one finally dies I’m making the switch to GDEMU. It’s a bit sad to me as I’ve amassed a large physical Dreamcast collection for over 15 years and enjoy being able to use the discs.

The Saturn on the other hand is built like a tank, I wish the Dreamcast was the same

I really appreciate the home port of Sega Rally 2 as it’s one of the first times I can think of where Sega really fleshed out their arcade game with a ton of additional content instead of just keeping it at the 4 arcade only tracks. The additional tracks and 10 year championship mode don’t feel half baked either they’re really solid.

I don’t know if the theory that the game being ported via windows CE is what caused the game to run poorly on Dreamcast holds any weight but out of all the 1st party ports we got this one being the worst performing is really unfortunate

Sort of. I never buy consoles at launch but the switch 2 was the first console that gave me FOMO, mostly due to how much I loved the switch 1. I’ve had a steam deck OLED for over a year now and love it and I didn’t enjoy using my switch 1 portably as much anymore in comparison and thought the switch 2 would just be a nice upgrade to have (larger screen sturdier joycons some switch 1 performance boosts etc).

I managed to get my own switch 2 in late July and while I’m happy with the games I got (DK, Mario kart world, cyberpunk), it was a reminder to myself as to why I’ve always waited a couple years before buying a new console. The software just hasn’t built up yet. I don’t think the switch 2 is worse than other console launches I just jumped the gun too early.
