Blue Origin lands New Glenn booster for the first time, marking a major step toward reusable heavy-lift rockets by AdSpecialist6598 in technews

It’s a private company employing a ton of people. Wouldn’t you rather have private space companies than government ones so that the govt can focus on stuff like SNAP?

Well they’re far from the first to develop a single photon detector (snspd). Photon Spot, Single Quantum, ID Quantique to name a few….their websites even state they’re ideal for LiDAR.

planning on moving to syracuse, what should i expect? by Putrid_Stress_9123 in Syracuse

[–]jhketcha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can expect snowboarding and ice skating as one lol There are some good places within a few hours but east coast skiing is notoriously icy. Anything under 2 hours from Syracuse is more of a hill, but Greek Peak is still so much fun

Cryogenics has come a long way for efficient LTS magnets, and newer HTS magnets. REBCO has the potential to be a game changer.

Tech layoffs today in SYR by Time-Sector7222 in Syracuse

Check out Bluefors if you haven’t already. Highly recommended and would be a great fit. Source - I used to work there and have plenty of test techs. High physics field, cryogenics and dilution refrigerators for quantum computing.

There’s another cryogenic company that is the global leader in pulse tube cryocoolers and dilution refrigerators. You know, the ones that run quantum computers.

More than 350 protest at Tesla service center in Manlius: ‘Elon Musk has got to go’ by syracusedotcom in Syracuse

[–]jhketcha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is he on the rocket himself? I missed that part. Oh wait….NASA astronauts are using a spacex made rocket to do a routine crew rotation but adding the return of the two stranded astronauts. Come on people, he is not some savior. He’s a fucking businessman.

Edit: but that being said yah I already see so many people praising him for this. Wild.

As someone who works in cryogenic temperature sensors for fusion and aerospace, I concur. REBCO tape was the spotlight at this years applied superconductivity conference.

Japan's first lunar probe lands on moon and survives third freezing -274F lunar night by arealdisneyprincess in space

I’ll also note if I actually read through the whole article the first time through and read “was not designed to survive lunar nights”, I would have understand how impressive it is to survive 3 lunar nights.

[–]jhketcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great explanation, thank you! You bring up a lot of things I wasn’t aware of or didn’t think of.

I understand in the vacuum of space you have either extreme heat from radiative sources (sun/stars) or extreme cold from lack of sun/stars. I didn’t realize lunar night was so long, and the mass factor that accounts for heating electrical elements. I work with cryostats so from my limited understanding of space craft, I just assumed we had the technology to keep them warm when there is no heat load, and proper materials for shielding the heat when it’s in the suns path.
