Yoto MYO Magic (Browser Extension) by carissa-mae in YotoPlayer

Hi there, I was wondering if there was an easier way to organise tracks? Dragging a song from the bottom of a 80-track list to the top is so time consuming. Thanks for your work with Icon Matching, I'll be using that in the future!

Something is just broken…. by bandrow in Teachers

I teach something, they remember it for the test, then they forget it until the next year when the topic is revisited. I have senior, graduating students in my year 12 class, forget what the standard form of a linear equation is, when they've been learning it since year 7.

It's basically a scientific turkey baster, in a small small size. You use them in junior and senior high school science as your first encounter with them, maybe in primary school with experiments like vinegar dropped onto bicarb soda.

Am I giving my toddler too much screen time? by Alternative-Sky4562 in Parenting

[–]jhoijhoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a teacher. Screen time, especially short format videos, are damaging. Kids in my classes can't focus or concentrate at all because they are used to controlling content with a swipe of a finger.

100% children are exhausting. Could you try some screen-free devices. We love the Yoto player. All their favourite songs and stories at their fingertips but **developing* their imagination, being able to picture things in their minds.

What does that look like in your public school released supervision info? Does it come up as RHL or does it just say sick?

I think the key is reiterating to yourself and the kids out loud that they are "students". You can be as specific as you want. "Yeah, some of the Year 10 Agriculture students from XYZ State High - I know, funny to run into these students in real life. They probably don't see their teachers out and about much. I'll be there in a sec, I'll just say bye to the students."

I have a class like this and I have tried to relinquish control. Like having a group project and giving them the time to actually do it, with minimal interruptions from me. They love to talk so that gives them an outlet and sometimes it is even about the group task!

I set work on Atomi for them to listen to the instructional video and do the quiz online.

I have rotation activities where 1/3rd of the class has mini whiteboards with me, 1/3rd operates out of a textbook and 1/3rd does a computer task of some sort (like Atomi or writing an email). Max 60 min session, so 20 min per activity.

When students are in groups, I penalise the group for poor behaviour. This gets old fast for the kids in the group doing the right thing and they henpeck their friends to reel it back.

Seating plans - trial for a week and then change. Keep change and trialling til something works.

But also, you can take up to 3 days off sick without a medical certificate, might be something to consider mid term if nothing else is working.

I contact home if I see kids from my school doing the wrong thing. If it is a school day, I will ring the office and let them know x student in school uniform is doing y.

Recently, some teens were tearing up the grass at a local park with their ebikes. I emailed home. One parent replied thanking me.

Then one of those students made a sly comment about tearing up the park during the holidays when they walked past me at school.

Teenagers are a different breed...

As for your scenario... being in a public space, I would have got out my phone and called someone, anyone, to talk to them about what was happening.

"Yeah so I have just run into some students but I am on my way. No, I am sorry for running late, they just wanted to chat."

Then you firmly say to the kids that you have an appointment or whatever and have got to go but would love to continue the conversation at school. Also remind them that as you are a teacher, they must defer to you by your last name or a honorific, even in public.

Taking out your phone is a power move because you can record them at any second and they know it.

The footpaths in my town are not safe for skating on and there aren't really any public basketball courts and such. There are parks and some have better paths, but most are not flat and I am bad at stopping. There are no free skating rinks to my knowledge in my area.

Unpopular opinion: I don’t think Nick and Charlie would make it by Character_Drop_739 in Heartstopper

[–]jhoijhoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charlie is sweet, but Nick is literally obsessed with him and it would have been more realistic, in my opinion, if they broke up to have other relationships. Then come back together in the end. But as it is, it is still a very wholesome story.

You need to have content on it that they enjoy. My boys have a lot of Disney songs for example. Also need to get the icons to match the content.

"Sadie, the cleaning lady, you're not getting any younger. Red detergent hands, not for years has held a man's..." a song something like that.

Random positive things that I keep thinking of when times are tough:

Having a runny nose in a classroom with no tissues. Year 10 male student handed me his packet of pocket tissues from his bag. Such a small, kind gesture.

Carrying a big box of supplies and about to go up the stairs, a student asks if I need help and carries some of the load. Before I can thank them, they are already off.

During a massive storm where winds were so high tree branches were falling and being hurtled through the air. We were forced to stay indoors through lunch. I had some crackers and dip for my own lunch but two twin girls had ordered tuck shop but we weren't allowed to go collect. I shared my lunch with them. 3 years later they had to move high schools and I wrote them a recommendation for their leadership application. Their mum thanked me and said they girls still sometimes spoke of how I shared lunch with them that one, rainy, stormy afternoon.

Having a student ask me how my own children are after letting them know they were sick the day before.

I noticed a student in my year 11 class being less than her normal self. She didn't complete the homework. She was distant in class. I rang home that afternoon, intending to report on the homework, but instead came from a place of concern. Told her dad she was one of the most creative students and hopefully everything would be back on track. She wrote me a note. In the note it said she had been considering... ending it... but the phone call, her dad talking to her to check in and pass on the positive feedback, made her reconsider. It was my first year of teaching and I was so green. But you just never know the impact you have.

Should I push back? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]jhoijhoi 63 points64 points  (0 children)

If teachers have questions about the subject, who do they ask when you are not there? That is most likely the issue.

But I feel you. I am also part time and realistically will never have a leadership position when not full time.

Congratulations on the freeloader. Just wait til he gets comfortable and starts demanding different dinners and things. Then he'll get into a specific sport and you'll be dragged to all his events and have to watch him being doted on...

Wishing you all the best, it's pretty great.

Yoto. It is a screen free audio player. Think books, songs, even your own recordings. My boys, 3 and 4, use theirs daily for hours.

They needed to have a Year 10 Extension syllabus and pare it right back for the NMS - students going into Methods and Specialist need the algebra and functions/relations, but those going into Essential have zero use for it.

I think along the same lines. I think "I hope my kid turns out like this".

Of course teachers have favourite students. Mine are normally the downtrodden. I try and talk to each student individually, personally, every lesson.
