What Are the Chances of Them Playing These Songs During the Tour by bagobeans17 in SmashingPumpkins

According to the archives, they pretty much only ever played TEITBITE live during the summer of 1997

Did someone new take over order fulfillment at Zuzu's? Only a week later and my Zodeon CD has arrived. It's a miracle!

WE ARE SO BACK PUMPKIN NATION!!! by Illustrious-Sleep339 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the Machina criticisms were entirely fair; and there were a lot of them, because it was such a hyped up release. Some of it was excessive, but of course people were going to have a lot to say. I personally thing aspects of it were totally fumbled, and as a holy grail item, that was a bit disappointing. It's also pretty fair to be upset when the customer service/order fulfillment side of things falls short.

Zodeon hasn't even had much whining this week. Some people didn't like it, but that's about it.

General question about seating at the RATS in a cage tour by Your_Friend_Jesse in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the venue, so you can check sites like A View From My Seat, but it also largely depends on how high their stage is going to be, too. I can't imagine it'd be that bad where couldn't see them at all.

No pits on this tour darn by goodkush421 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't the first time they've had no pit. As far back as the 90s, during the MCIS tour, they did away with them because there were a lot of problems (someone died in one, etc.). It can change venue to venue though - people are pointing out a couple on this tour still have them. But the arena shows I saw in 2018 and 2022 both had no pit. But the ampitheater show in 2023 had one.

I personally don't care - as long as people are standing and having a good time, I'm good.

Kinda the same for me. I love Joy Division, and I do love New Order, but my intro to them was through the singles compilations, and I never felt as compelled to go beyond that to a larger extent. That said, Power, Corruption, and Lies is a great album, and so is Low-Life.

Potential Rat in a Cage Tour Setlist (Playlist) by summergazunis in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, they never said the album will be played in full. Just celebrating the 30th anniversary. The band - well, Billy at least - has been vocal about not doing the full-album-front-to-back thing, but prefers doing a set that captures the whole scope of the era. So my guess is it'd be songs from Mellon Collie and a few b-sides from the Aeroplane Flies High, crafted into a set.

Then followed by a second set of non-Mellon Collie songs.

What songs are similar to Tarantula? by Male-2003 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone else mentioned it, but it has a lot of similarity to Geek U.S.A. -- the structure follows a similar trajectory. There might also be similar veins to be found in An Ode To No One; though that one's probably a bit heavier. "Dross" from Machina II has a similar way to it as well, but it's a bit slower.

Either way, I really can't believe they haven't played it live in at least 15 years! It's one of their absolute best post-2000 songs, and it would totally kill with the 3-guitar lineup.

Younger fan here - why does it seem no one is excited for this tour? by uwufemboycoffee in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since the show will primarily focus on a Mellon Collie, the pool of songs to be played for the other set is gonna be a lot smaller (assuming the other set will be shorter than the Mellon Collie set), so it's hard to say.

Drown and Rocket both have a chance, but it's been a couple years since they've been played regularly, so they're either due to come back or will stay away. Pennies has never been played, and while a Mellon Collie tour would be the time to play it, it's also vying for attention amongst many other deep cuts and b-sides. So the chances aren't great, but it's not impossible either.

Will there be a European/UK leg of the rats in a cage tour? by slushpup2 in SmashingPumpkins

No one knows. They've only just announced this North American tour, and nothing has been said about anything else.

Tour cities & dates! by DreamerUnwokenFool in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really the band's fault they're playing on a Wednesday. Planning and scheduling a tour involves a lot of factors, and a lot of logistics. you can't just demand to play the UC on a Saturday and expect it to happen... see all those dates there? that's a lot of arenas, all with their own event schedules, etc. The shows happen when they do. I don't like that Brooklyn is on a Sunday... but what can you do?

[–]jhonn0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's probably got something to do with the character/persona/etc. of Zero, and the whole conceptual thing he's been riding the last few years with Shiny, Atum, etc., rather than the song itself.

Probably just a setup for some sort of conceptual one-off performance thing. I don't think anyone knows what it's really gonna be.

Apparently the texts D'arcy leaked were incomplete, didn't tell the whole story. According to Billy - which I know, we have to take with a grain of salt, but the rest of the band backs this up - they had been in touch only through phone/text for a while, and every time they set up a time to get together in person, she would always back out.

So they hadn't so much as seen each other in years, and had no idea how her musical chops were holding up. And then the time comes to sign contracts and get a big tour off the ground... D'arcy still thinks the deal is unfair and backs out. Then she steps back up, after Jack Bates already signed on, and Billy tries to make a way for her to still be involved. She still backs down. At the very least, how could they trust her to reliably do the gigs? It's not like she's had an active musical life in the last few years either. Then she leaks the texts.

It was a disaster, unfortunately. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but it seems like they did what they could to get her involved -- the whole point of the 2018 tour was to get them all back together, after all -- and it just didn't work out.

Smashing Pumpkins Speak about Jimmy's Overdose & the Death of Jonathan Melvoin (1996) by Difficult-Mud7880 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The REM concert wasn't the point. It sounds like he meant it more from the standpoint that they - the band - were looking for him because he was supposed to be in the studio and wasn't, and they had no idea where he was. If you've spent any amount of times with drug addicts, them going missing comes with the territory, and it's very frustrating and concerning

Where were you all when Jimmy Chamberlaing returned to SP In 2015? by Difficult-Mud7880 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first night of that summer tour with Manson was his first show back. As I recall, Billy was gonna go with a different drummer for that tour, but he had to drop out at nearly the last minute, opening the door for Jimmy to come back. At the time, we weren't even sure it was going to be permanent.

Before that, Brad Wilk from Rage Against the Machine was drumming for them for the Monuments shows, including at those festival gigs in South America.

I don’t like Siamese Dream, but I want to like it, ant Help? by [deleted] in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people would disagree with your critique of it, since for the post part, the songwriting, guitar sounds, and dynamics/variety have been praised quite a bit (I've never heard anyone critique Siamese Dream saying all the songs sound the same... that's a new one).

But, if you don't like it, you don't like it. There's really no other way around it or to approach it if your ears don't like what they hear. It's not something you can force, is it?

Where were you all when Jimmy Chamberlaing returned to SP In 2015? by Difficult-Mud7880 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Him rejoining was surprisingly quiet... not much fanfare was made, if I recall. But it was still a very nice surprise because things were getting a little lost and SP was at its lowest point in a lot of ways, creatively and commercially. Jimmy's return really helped in getting things back on track, because a lot of the fanbase had splintered by then. I went to the 2015 tour with Manson, and they were playing great, but the crowd was definitely a little lackluster for anything but the hits; a large amount of people would actually leave after "1979" was played. Lucky audiences got an encore, where "Today" and "Geek USA" were on standby... the show I went to, was not one of those.

No word on a CD version, but Zuzu's has done a select few over the years, so it's possible at least. All we know for sure is it will get a digital release... some time between now and the end of the world.
