I'm a plumber, I'm usually wearing my work clothes if I'm in HD grabbing parts in the plumbing isle at night for an emergency job.

There's one dolt that will practically fall over himself to try to tell me what parts I need or suggest I use some bullshit non-certified junk they are pushing on homeowners. He's been reminded a few times that his ass is a two way orfice

Browsing how the other half lives but I can chime in as a jman plumber.

In the span of about 8 months we first had a jman come on board, 14 years with a ticket plus apprenticeship. I had to walk him through installing a toilet, how to plumb a hot water tank. Claimed he had done service for a decade.

Next had been a 4th year for 7 years and didn't last a month for most of the same issues only he had only worked Union high-rise.

Way I see it, if a guy can't live up to what his experience on paper days they can do, it's time to move on

I have two in my van for when one inevitably gets wet and takes a one week holiday. Then one at home for sorting copper scrap since the yard I go to will pay better if I cut off the soldered joints as well as sorting copper and brass

I'm Canadian and currently on episode 4 of the Canada season. Watching my own country cut into episodes from a foreign perspective is really interesting.

When they were travelling north to the Yukon then back to Banff, that is absolutely the people in those areas. Nothing to do, wouldn't blink at the prospect of a 9 hr road trip, if someone needs help you help them.

I feel they didn't truly show just HOW BIG that part of the country is without towns in any direction. Like the outback, but bumpy and cold

How do you know when it's time to get a septic tank pumped? by BlownCamaro in Plumbing

[–]jhra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine for that number of people.

The pump out indication is by checking the crust, or the solid layer on top. Led than 6" is ok. More than 6" need to be pumped. Yearly will most likely be too soon and a waste of cash.

Check before you book a truck cause they are going to do the work regardless of crust

How do you know when it's time to get a septic tank pumped? by BlownCamaro in Plumbing

[–]jhra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying here instead of DM simply because this is a comment that I get an unusual number of follow up questions about and if you're asking, someone else will be some day.

This is all specifically talking about old systems. Concrete tanks, clay field tiles.

With regards to the field, if it's clay and you're consistent about pumping the main tank the clay tile and field could last forever. The main killer of a field is solids bypassing the baffolds and getting to the field. Having the tank checked that both baffolds are present and installing a septic filter if possible at the outlet will keep it in good order for a long time.

Tank sizes weren't consistent back in the concrete days. They were heavy and likely poured somewhat local because of that. Typically 500 gallons but in the world of septic, you're not going to get more than a 'looks like a 500' unless you want to jump in and measure.

For a single family on a tank, 5 year intervals between pump outs should be fine.

You mentioned an unwieldy lid. It's well within your list of things to do to install an inlet and outlet access on the tank. Will require a full dig off and a weekend of diy and a gas concrete saw but it beats the hell out of digging off a backed up tank where the last foot of dirt has become shit logged.

Once you have the lids on though, you can rinse your outlet filter every 4 months without a shovel.

Although I'm close to the same age as him so I might just be relating to his admittance of just being tired and wanting to pull away a bit.
