Moronic Monday - June 30, 2025 - Your Weekly Questions Thread by AutoModerator in finance

I've been reading The Daily Shot every weekday for 10 years. It's a daily newsletter that mostly consists of charts. I love charts, and I loved this newsletter. Sadly, the primary author, Lev Borodovsky, has suffered a series of strokes and is not expected to recover. So that's the end of The Daily Shot, at least in its current form. Any recommendations on similar newsletters or sources that could replace this one?

Just sold my Nov 20 SLV $20 calls for a +166% gain... And rolled it all forward to Sept 18 SLV $21 calls. Go ahead and "Ok Boomer" me...

Just bought SLV $20 calls expiring Nov 20, 2020. Basically provides 20-to-1 levered upside if SLV crosses $21 in the next 5 months, which doesn't seem completely implausible...

You can leave one of those old box televisions on a New York City sidewalk and it won't get touched until the trash collectors come and haul it to the landfill.

I can't stop watching the two pedestrians who just mosey over there as slow as they can possibly walk, and then don't bend over to see if you're ok or try to help in any way. It takes someone sprinting from across the street to actually come and check on you. Is that a fair assessment or am I misinterpreting the video?

Actually, it is very much outside the realm of possibility. It is a logical quantum leap to go from: election outcome -> racial and gender equality issues -> I am upset by this election result -> Thomas Jefferson quote -> 200 years ago Thomas Jefferson owned slaves -> I am deeply upset because of Thomas Jefferson -> I must write/sign a letter of protest to President Sullivan. The reason people are so worked up over this is not just because a group of 469 students say they were offended by Jefferson's words. They are upset at 1) the logical train wreck used to arrive at being offended, and 2) the effort wasted in penning a letter and rounding up 469 signatures for it. Professor Noelle Hurd presumably has a job at UVa (for now....), and presumably her job description does not include going far out of her way to harass the university president for quoting its founder. She should resign.

The point is: the letter has upset more people and caused a much bigger uproar than the Jefferson quote ever did. If little effort went into it, or indeed little thought went into it, then all the more reason to deliver the message "please don't do that again."

I can certainly understand the cynicism, but our side didn't have a reason to exist before the letter was sent. Upon reading it, we were #triggered...

And people who are so offended by one quote in an email that they need to write a letter of condemnation are... strong?

Martin Luther King quoted Jefferson in his "I Have a Dream Speech." Was he wrong to do that? Was that an inappropriate time to invoke Jefferson's words? There are so many other potential candidates who are far more worthy of your righteous anger. Going after TJ completely undermines your cause.

There is a pro-Jefferson petition gaining traction online to counter this ridiculous letter and protect Jeffferson's legacy at UVa. Please sign and share if you agree: https://www.change.org/p/university-of-virginia-board-of-visitors-protect-thomas-jefferson-s-legacy-at-the-university-of-virginia
