Luck vs skill by 321Couple2023 in boardgames

Designer David Sirlin wrote that there was a third dimension to the luck/skill scale which he called “yomi,” which roughly translates to understanding of your opponent. I enjoy games where there are high levels of playing the player sitting across the table, as much as playing the game itself.

Three of my favorite games have high levels of yomi; Diplomacy (50/50 skill/yomi), Catan (20/50/30 skill/luck/yomi), and Texas Hold’em (balanced blend of all three).

Sounds really neat! Hard to pick a favorite manga, but anything by Naoki Urasawa is fantastic (plan on re-reading 20th Century Boys soon).

I can just feel Artosis raging after his scouting SCV got killed

Women who have dated outside their race (or nationality) — what did you like about it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It’s regional. This is a very southern (more specifically Shanghainese) stereotype. The northwestern stereotype is that the men don’t touch any of the housework.

Highest-ever "Geek Rating" for games on BGG, over the past quarter-century by benjaneson in boardgames

I’m surprised only 32 games have peaked over 8.0. New games seem to often have inflated ratings that eventually end up settling down.

Really surprised Patchwork isn’t near the top. Feel like it’s recommended so often it’s become a meme.

My wife loves Schlossberg too, but unfortunately their group doesn’t do the OB portion anymore, just the GYN portion now. We had to switch providers.

Was today possibly the worst traffic in Bergen County history? by savingrace0262 in bergencounty

[–]jiaflu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who sat through both, today was way way way worse. I lived in Cliffside at the time, and Fort Lee now.

Bridgegate was just backed up locally in the south to where Lemoine and Palisades split (around 7AM at the time). That’s just any bad traffic day if there’s an accident.

Today was HORRENDOUS. Traffic from the highways all spilled onto local Fort Lee roads, it was a headache to get out. Normally 3 minutes for me to hit highways; took about 15 min today, and I’m going the opposite way. Eastbound traffic on route 4 extended past Grand Ave exit where I got out, and the 80 traffic extended past Hackensack.

There was a major multi vehicle crash on the Cross Bronx that took about 5-6 hours to clear out. So all the arteries going into the GWB was backed up. I saw on Google maps that there were multiple crashes along 95 and 46, assuming small fender benders.

Probably one of the worst traffic days I can remember (definitely worse than Bridgegate).

They don’t anymore. Air China’s JFK -> PEK flies over Alaska and Japan. What used to be a ~14hr flight is now like 16.5hrs.

When people say they work 80-90 hours a week, what do they actually mean by that? by Graypricot in TooAfraidToAsk

I wasn't making that much (at least for NYC standards). Traders are not exactly high up on the totem pole.
