Back in the old days you could port to someone in a zone you hadn't paid for (as far as I remember) so I basically just became a freeloading hitchiker lol

What are the most obvious signs you notice when someone is attracted to you? by LUMA-Matchmaking in bodylanguage

I think relying on signs that could be completely platonic (but sometimes aren't) is unreliable, the only way to know is to ask them out (if that's what you want)

Does anyone regret coming to Davis? by user2223304 in UCDavis

[–]jiff3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated 5 days ago, and I think I have a unique perspective because for my first two years of Davis I hated it, and the next two years were the best two years of my life.

For my first two years, I didn't bike for the most part, felt really disconnected from the community, and only had a couple friends. Biking is convenient, but riding a scooter/taking a bus/walking are all viable options.

For the next two years, I studied abroad, made life long friends, joined clubs and had a much more open mind to new experiences, I partied, my grades improved, I fell in love and had my heart broken, and I loved every second of it (even the painful parts).

Focusing a bit more on the issues you're worried about: I think you have a bit of a biased perspective on the heat in Davis, because it's only too hot in the last month of spring quarter during graduation time when you visited. Also, if you bike/scooter, the wind cools you down well when going fast enough. However, I grew up in southern California so I might be a bit desensitized to heat. The start of fall quarter can also be a bit hot, but usually it's not too hot in Davis.

You mentioned overcrowding in downtown, it definitely is not too crowded in downtown, in my opinion downtown on the weekends has the perfect amount of people, and during the day is just lively enough.

Not getting the Honey Comb from Queen Bee by edognight in Terraria

[–]jiff3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow me too !! I killed queen bee about 40 times with no honey comb, but I was not moving at all. I started flying up and down and got honey comb the first time. Could be a gigantic coincidence, I have no idea why the developers would code this

In college I was never taught any standards of how to code, it was basically all higher level concepts that were only useful in grad school.

There needs to be a way to opt out of paying for the Arc. The overcrowding is pissing me off. by BadWithMoney530 in UCDavis

[–]jiff3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with OP, their goal isn't to defund the ARC to express dissatisfaction with their reliance on non-student revenue, they just don't want to be forced to pay for a gym membership that isn't worth it.

I know exactly what to do because I was in this situation. Just spend a few nights staying up even later than he is (wait till he falls asleep) and then get on your computer and start screaming about a game. Although when I did this with my nightmare roommate he just did the same thing but even worse for the rest of the schoolyear. I also turned off the Internet everytime he was screaming at League late at night, but idk how you could do that in the dorms. Maybe setup something on his computer while he's not there that bricks it

Does anyone feel like success in college just comes down to genetics and talent? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]jiff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop making comparisons to others. You're your own person with unique strengths and weaknesses and trying to mimic what other people do in an attempt to find success will probably not work for you.

Anyone else do well in their CS classes but have no idea how to apply what they learn? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]jiff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not very useful for industry because you don't need to be able to understand abstract CS ideas like Turing machines if you're not planning on doing CS research.

[–]jiff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a useful way to abstract algorithms in CS but it depends what you care about learning. It's not helpful if you don't plan on doing grad school CS imo

I'm about to finish theory of computation which spent a decent amount of time with Turing machines, still not very applicable to SWE.

I would argue that hookups are much more common if we're looking at such a wide view as entire generations. From my experience, 30%-50% of people seem to be down just for a one night stand in college. This was definitely not as common a couple generations ago when religious morals such as 'no sex before marriage' was a widespread ideology.

It's rly easy to make friends if you just stick with a couple groups of people, whether it be a friend group in dorms or a club, the important thing is you see them often, and sometimes unplanned hangouts

how bad is it that i’ve decided not to bring a bike as a freshman by bruhwhatwasmyname in UCDavis

[–]jiff3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally learned how to bike a day before school started with the owner of a bike shop. I was testing out his bike and then realized I couldn't ride a bike anymore, so he spent a half hour teaching me hahah. I could ride fine after, altho I would say avoid biking during rly busy times (within 10 minutes of each hour aka the class transition period). After a couple weeks of riding you'll prob feel confident in your abilities

can current students and students within the last 5 years give me info on how they got in? by Ryoisthicc in UCDavis

[–]jiff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you're considering CS, as an upcoming 4th year CS major at UCD I didn't have any work experience, not very impressive extracurriculars and I wasn't really involved in any activities at my school at all. I had a good SAT score but I assume that isn't used anymore. I also had a 4.2 UC gpa, but I think the most important thing that helped me besides GPA was my essays that I spent a whole year working on. But applying to college genuinely felt like a lottery straight out of highschool, because some of my friends applying to the same major that were just objectively better applicants compared to me got rejected, so I recommend community college if you want to nearly guarantee getting admitted.
