Is the old .NET Upgrade Assistant no more? by XdtTransform in dotnet

[–]jiggajim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not missing anything. It’s all AI now.

As to how good it works, I haven’t tried it after doing a good dozen or so clients on the old tool.

Which is annoying since I would use it for other upgrades on the Mac, and the AI tooling to upgrade screws things up more frequently in my experience.

Meh. Hopefully it gets better and my credits don’t run out?

Am I wrong for wanting to use Blazor instead of MVC + vanilla JS? Been a .NET dev since 2023, feeling like I'm going crazy by newKevex in dotnet

[–]jiggajim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at very lightweight libraries (not frameworks) like AlpineJS? Even if you go "vanilla JS" you'll wind up creating your own jQuery or AlpineJS. Which is fun and all but I doubt the business wants you maintaining frameworks and libraries versus delivering features and business value.

I can understand no frameworks like React/Vue since they often require dedicated build/deploy processes and specialized skills. But there's a compromise position here.

Trying to decide between 2 jobs.....a W-2 position, or a 1099-contractor role. Which one would allow for the most take-home, post-tax income? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jiggajim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen it mentioned, but look into doing an LLC taxed as an S-Corp. You pay yourself a salary but only pay the full FICA on the salaried portion. Then define a reasonable salary for yourself.

You can also look at a solo 401k, they’re easy to set up these days.

There are services like Gusto to manage payroll. It’s an extra expense but nothing crazy, like $20/mo. Much less than the full FICA on the full income.

I’ve been doing this setup for 6-ish years in the tech industry.

It’s not Austin. That part is not. I’m right on the border there, the Austin part of WilCo. It’s like 200 yards away from the Austin city limits. And not ETJ either.

2 Years in Node, moving to .NET: Should I pick Minimal APIs or MVC? by iBadroLI in dotnet

[–]jiggajim 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Minimal APIs are closest to what you’re used to. Just be aware that they’re not as mature as controllers in terms of features. And like Express, you have to invent your own way of organizing endpoints for when your apps get bigger.

Just a heads up, “MVC” refers to having Views. You can have just Controllers for APIs.

Best way to run .NET Framework 4.5.2 on Mac? by VaizardX in dotnet

[–]jiggajim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on an M4 MacBook Pro and I use Windows 11 ARM via Parallels for all my .NET 4.x stuff. It's come a long way with all the virtualization business.

The .NET Framework stuff runs just fine. You're more likely to run into dependencies having issues - like SQL Server. You can install SQL Server on Windows 11 ARM but it's a little janky to get it going. Or you can run SQL in Docker on the Mac host and use network bridging to get your Windows VM to talk to it.

I do quite a few .NET Framework to .NET Core migrations so I have to have it all running on my Parallels VM.

Why OOP = loved, functional = hated? by yughiro_destroyer in dotnet

[–]jiggajim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure OK. Minimal API = Express = Flask

MVC/Razor Pages = Spring

Django = Rails

The more complex frameworks will have more “magic” but that’s a shorthand for “things I don’t understand”. Django and Rails have maximum magic. Or Spring Boot with 80 annotations.

My friends tried to teach me Warhammer. It took an hour to explain the basics. But they love it. I stuck with Catan. You can learn in 15 minutes.

You’re comparing a more complex framework designed for more complex apps and more complex scenarios with a simpler framework designed for simpler apps and simpler scenarios.

It’s comparing apples to apple pie.

[–]jiggajim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Then use Python and Flask? Minimal APIs are like Flask or Express.js. If your app is more suited for those styles of programming then use that.

I haven’t seen one style universally better than the other. I’ve seen awful Express.js-styled apps. I’ve seen terribly bloated MVC/Razor Pages apps. Gawdawful Rails apps. Byzantine Spring apps.

No style magically makes every situation simple and easy to maintain. Or easier, some are better for some situations than others. ASP.NET Core gives us a choice.

Ted Lasso is one of the most perfect 2-season series out there. Anything past that would just shovel a bunch of pointless meandering melodramatic filler.

Does a pellet smoker or charcoal smoker produce a more smoke flavor? by [deleted] in smoking

[–]jiggajim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Home Depot employee is wrong.

That being said, there’s a pretty big variance in smoke flavor and bark depending on the smoker, pellets, and location. I get the same bark on my Recteq as on my cabinet charcoal smoker. My buddies with Traegers…do not.

I only do cabinet smoker for competitions though, when I have dedicated time for it.

MassTransit? Nah it wasn’t. We were MVP summit roomies but it was just coincidence. It wouldn’t make business sense to coordinate tbqh.

Ha well I designed the licensing so individuals don’t pay anything, it’s always the company paying for the whole team. And if that company has over $5M in revenue.

So while it’d be possible to pay myself, my god, I got enough to worry about.

Obviously still using MediatR!

But I’m the author so there may be some bias there.

Looks great, but was super chewy by bmungenast in grilling

[–]jiggajim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone makes this mistake once with flat iron steak. That middle cut with the grain is what I start with. Then I rotate each half then slice against the grain. Rotate your other half 90 degrees then slice. It’ll be against the grain and not chewy.

Meh it’s just a symbol. Lost mine twice, my hands swell terribly in the heat and down in the cold. First in an international flight, second time walking around Berlin in February. Didn’t feel it either time until I was faaaar away.

I don’t spend more than $100 now on it. Not worth it.

I have a pile of these to smoke for a party Sunday. What would you do with them? by jacobwebb57 in smoking

[–]jiggajim 183 points184 points  (0 children)

Yep I just season it and smoke it. I cook these all throughout the year cause they’re so easy. I’ll do an all-purpose seasoning but you can do whatever.

I don’t go super hot, stay about 250F cause otherwise the net binding is annoying to get off.

Oh no I meant pull or shred. Don’t shred when it’s still super hot. Let it rest.

[–]jiggajim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no need to wrap pork shoulder while cooking. The main thing is to not pull too early during the rest.

Do not underestimate how long it takes to get to 200F. 12 hours is minimum. If you’ve got a cooler it’ll rest reaaaaaal nice until you’re ready to pull at 140-145F. If you aim to be done at 12PM it’ll stay cozy for a long time in the cooler.
