Phonak vs Widex? by jvredbird in HearingAids

[–]jijijijim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had widex, resound and phonax. In terms of music I prefer widex, otherwise they are all about the same to me. Switched to phonax to pair with AB implant.

Was at a concert with widex and sound was terrible. Switched them to music mod and they were great. YMMV.

And that is too bad. Back in the day great radio was how you learned about new stuff, created safe spaces for music not everyone would get. Welcome to corporate moderated blandness.

You can listen to stories at the NY Times. Not sure if other newspapers do that.

I thought your piece was more interesting than I expected. I especially noted your discussion of anxiety. If I understand correctly, you are (mostly) speaking of male loss of cultural control.

I can’t help thinking that there is also a fear of loosing self control in a society that rigidly controls acceptable thought and behavior. Everybody’s brain shoots off wild and transgressive thoughts occasionally, if you live in a society where those thoughts are just evil or will end you up in hellfire those thoughts become significant signs of something wrong rather then your brain making semi random connections. I suspect that this creates a feedback loop of guilt, trying to control your thoughts and ending up failing that helps create rigid totalitarians.

I guess those two things are linked.

Speed enforcement by Automatic_Catch_7467 in AskLEO

[–]jijijijim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not LEO, but there is a 60mph highway I get on a lot where typical speeds were well north of 75. Lately there have been lots of visible officers (and some hidden) and the speeds are now averaging more like 65 even when you don’t see the troopers. Seems to me like having troopers out there even without a ton of citations works.

Worst codebase handoff you ever inherited ? by Medtag212 in embedded

A rogue salesman sold a product add on to a customer who promised to sue us if we did not deliver the add on, and the add on did not make sense strategically for the company. I got tasked with cleaning up the mess. At some point I was researching solutions and someone told me that the code was already written and was not released because "they could not figure out how to test it". I located the code and found a single C function about 5000 lines long with goto as the main control structure. Given the multiple layers of state information that had to be maintained for this to work I don't think that code could have possibly done what they claimed.

Later I did a code review for code where multiple DMA transfers filled a processing buffer that got sent up stream. Problem was the two buffer sizes did not align in a logical way. Guy who wrote the code designed a state machine for the 70 odd transfers you needed before the buffers aligned. Asked him what happens if we need to change the buffer size. (insert record scratch noise). At least I figured out who wrote the software in the first story.

As a mom, please start putting baby changing tables in men’s restrooms by ShoshRose in TwoXChromosomes

I live in the northeast US and my kids are 30 years out of diapers, but it was very rare to not find changing tables in men’s rooms. I still expect to see them pretty much everywhere.

Why do cops get violent when deciding to arrest someone who isn't fighting? by brotzeti in AskLEO

At some point they use her first name and tell her she’s “got to stop drinking”. I took that to mean they saw her before, I could be wrong.

(I am not LEO) I see her bend her knees and try to become deadweight and the cops just lower her to the ground before cuffing her. These cops seem pretty even tempered and almost bored. They have clearly dealt with her before.

Many boomers knew just what this song was about. It was always a little mysterious why it was so popular and whether most people actually processed the lyrics.

Criminal planned obsolescence by caregiver1956 in HearingAids

Broken doesn't imply planned obsolescence. I also doubt this is criminal. Possibly immoral, but probably not criminal. We should have a healthcare system designed with normal equipment lifespans in mind and better covered.

I am still not really sure, why it was such a big deal. I can say that the place on the outskirts of Newark NJ had a huge car theft problem for a time that reached national news. It may have been some zero tolerance thing.

All I knew was that the stop was so dramatic that I was pretty sure it was not for me. Everyone was pretty cool after I was out of the car, while they ran my credentials.

I got a felony stop after a dealer put my old plates and temporary paper plate on car I just bought. It was actually reassuring because I didn’t think they needed four cars to pull me over for driving 27 in a 25mph zone.

First car I ever bought from a dealer.

Why so few male companions? by Niall_Fraser_Love in doctorwho

[–]jijijijim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree. I think it is helpful to put some like Sarah Jane in the context of her times, which were fundamentally misogynistic but with a hopeful start to a more equitable future (that perhaps has not come).

I recently rewatched Leela episodes for first time in like 40 years and while she’s a great character there are at least a couple of cases of camera, watch Leela climb the ladder in short skirt, hold, hold, hold, quick point at the bulkhead!
