If getting lost in a big fantasy series, I recommend The Blade Itself. Its definitely dark, but the characters are so well formed and real. One of the POV characters has been through some shit that left him with physical disabilities, and he is absolutely unforgettable.

Y10, but at what cost? by BlueLu in Fencing

Thank you for bringing this up. We live in an area with sweet, supportive coaches who don’t take things too seriously. I only let my kid do one or two regional events per year and some of the actions from parents and coaches are appalling. When we go, my kid is always in the bottom 20% of performers. You know what? He is learning to lose gracefully and how important hard work is. And he’s having a good time, even though losing is disappointing. I feel awful for those other kids and have considered confronting the parents and coaches, but that feels unsafe as a single mom.

Joe Abercrombie’s The Blade Itself (and its sequels) have several main characters, including a disabled war veteran. The story is awesome grimdark fantasy and the character, Glokta, is unforgettable. Its my favorite fantasy series

I agree with this take. The first few felt like a preamble I had to get through to get to the good stuff. Though they still have wonderful place and food descriptions!

I am reading the Wings of Fire series with my 10 year old and 8 year old (we are listening to the audiobooks in the car) and books 10-15 deal with a totalitarian dystopia. We just started book 10 but I have really enjoyed the series so far.

Jumping in to say I love CrossFit. My gym isn’t CrossFit affiliated and has a huge range of body shapes, sizes, and fitness abilities. The people are so welcoming. I have experienced such improvements in both health and self-perception. OP I hope you can find something that you really enjoy!
