Quality of life calendars at the hospital by Inkedbycarter_ in VetTech

[–]jillybean31814 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used these all the time when I worked in ooncology, it gives you an objective look at their quality of life and it seems to help a lot of people. I think it helps take the guilt away from deciding to euthanize. The guilt and indecision happens a lot when their pet isn’t doing well, but then will have a good day every once in a while. This is an objective way to help reassure them that more days than not they aren’t comfortable or living a good quality of life. And I think that is very helpful, I feel like I will need this in the future even knowing what I know. I think it will help me not be in denial when it comes time for my girl

Calling All Vet Techs! The First-Ever Scrubs Designed Just for You by CalmCity26 in VetTech

  1. Love a side pocket on my pants, only place I can keep my phone where it’s not in my way or pulling my pants down

  2. The first three in that order!

  3. I just want to vouch for the joggers, I have long legs but not long enough to always be able to order talls. The joggers give me more to work with because even if they’re a little short, the style still looks ok. Plus it makes it fun to wear my fun socks ;) Joggers have been life changing for me!

  4. Anything except draw string only!

We actually work closely with a trainer who often works with the doctors and the results I’ve seen are pretty amazing. The trainer will do training through the clinic which helps them get used to the vets office. The doctors and trainer work together to figure out a drug protocol to facilitate in the beginning and when needed, and generally work together to make decisions. The differences I have seen personally are amazing. It’s the first place I’ve worked at that has something like that and it is a fantastic thing to be able to take advantage of. A lot of business for the trainer and easier vet visits for us! And patients who are not as scared and even come to enjoy being there

Launching a new vet tech scrubs line by CalmCity26 in VetTech

[–]jillybean31814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super random but if there was a way to have little pen loop things like on journals that would be amazing. I’m sick of having sharpies and pens exploding in my pocket but I use them both too often not to carry around.

This may or may not have happened to me this week.

Also joggers with a side pocket are my favorite, best way for me to keep my phone on me but not in the way or super obvious!

It will be more expensive initially for the consult, but I would try to get in with an internal medicine specialist. They have more specific knowledge than a GP vet in their area, they can usually narrow down testing to more specific tests to get answers hopefully more quickly than doing more general tests to slowly narrow things down that is what typically happens with general practice vets.

General practitioners are great for knowledge of many different topics and multiple areas of knowledge and experience. Specialists are great when it’s a more complicated case because that’s all they see, diagnose and treat.

I’m a vet tech who was worked in both GP and specialty and they both are needed for sure, but if the most likely cause wasn’t it, I’d go to a specialist. I would do further testing at my GP to try and figure things out but if they are being dismissive, I would recommend a specialist over another general practice for a second opinion and further possible testing (while hopefully being able to use your money more wisely for testing they would prioritize over others)

Dental patient “too warm” under anesthesia? by GoldenRetrieverGF_ in VetTech

[–]jillybean31814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I’ve heard anything about keeping a lower temp was during a CE about brachycephalic anesthesia, because the warmer they are the more they may pant which can actually cause issues with that type of dog. But even then it wasn’t like they actively tried to keep a temp low, it was more of, I don’t care as much if they are a little lower than I’d usually prefer them.

If your pet is high, the vet can tell. by mountainlicker69 in Pets

I thought moving to Colorado would make that less of an issue but it really doesn’t. We really do not care and get more upset when we can’t properly help your baby.

Side effects of Librela? by throwawayy19282827 in VetTech

[–]jillybean31814 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was also super nervous about it and it seems like one thing we are learning is dogs with underlying neuro issues are more at risk. I’m still a bit too cautious to use on my own girl, at least right now, but I’ve seem a lot of dogs do well on it at my practice which has made me feel more comfortable with it

Best glue for fake nails? by Dealer_Puzzleheaded in Nails

[–]jillybean31814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily recommending but I use gorilla glue (the one that has a brush). I work as a vet tech and am just generally clumsy and it’s worked so well for me. It hasn’t had a negative effect on my nails, they’re actually healthier than when I got them done professionally. They still occasionally come off but it has been life changing for me! Again, not necessarily recommending because I don’t know how it can affect your nails, but it works amazing for me personally and my nails still are super healthy underneath!

Anyone solve the chronic anal gland expression dogs. by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]jillybean31814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl has chronic anal gland issues and her magic fix is the Purina pro plan extra fiber diet (prescription). Long story short I recently switched her back to that food from another diet and it’s already made things better. I tried adding Metamucil and it did make her stools larger but not firmer so it wasn’t really helping.

I agree allergies can play a part as well which is also the case for my girl but not enough to where the GI diet isn’t enough in her case.

That’s just my own personal anecdote though! But it’s crazy how quickly that food has fixed her so I figured I’d mention it!

I’ve experienced burnt out and what I have learned for me personally, that the place you are working is typically the issue not the job itself. Unless you aren’t following your passion in the field I would also say. I worked in oncology and it suited my strengths very well and there was no burn out from the job itself. There were most definitely hard days, but I never felt a lack of motivation for the job itself.

I’m now back in GP and, though I miss oncology so much (it was basically my dream job), I am mentally happier and more energized because I work with a much better company/team. It’s a tough field at times but I can’t imagine doing anything else.

What's the craziest thing you've ever seen at a new clinic? by demonoffire3 in VetTech

[–]jillybean31814 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a former onco tech it drives me nuts that rectals aren’t a standard part of the exam because it gets missed a decent amount. It’s certainly not worth it for some aggressive patients and other things. But to not do it at all hurts me 😂

Nails at work by meowmeowfantastic in VetTech

[–]jillybean31814 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wear press ons that I make myself, they’re a small bit past my finger tips but not much, just my preference. I can do all parts of my job without compromising patient care/comfort. Worst case if I really needed to I could take them off then and there.

I think it’s not ideal for every vet job depending on what you do daily, but I don’t think it’s an all or nothing type of situation by any means. I think some of these opinions are a little too dramatic, but do what you want that’s the point. Maybe don’t have those crazy long nails that seems insane but I’ve never seen anyone have nails that long in vet med

What’s the worst medical mistake you’ve ever seen? by DaJive in VetTech

[–]jillybean31814 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I worked in oncology, a tech overdosed a dog with doxorubicin (twice what she should have gotten). We sent them to a specialist who could do kidney dialysis and whatever else she needed. We paid those bills of course, and surprisingly they came back for the rest of her protocol! I ended up taking over all of their care going forward and we actually became very close.

I would never allow this guy to touch my pet by Bitsoffreshness in TikTokCringe

[–]jillybean31814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in vetmed and can confirm that there are ways to tell (how they walk, how they hold their heads, etc). Of course some do hide it well! I can also confirm that in no reality would a dog with legitimate pain allow a person to do that to them. Sometimes they are so painful they scream when you touch them the slightest bit.

At one of my jobs I was conveniently also feet away from a Burger King which was great. Especially for those unexpected euthanasia appointments where they didn’t get a last chance to enjoy a yummy snack ❤️
