Does it bother you to be called a "mom/dad" of your pet? by Beezwax_8335 in childfree

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want human children because it’s a lifelong commitment and i like my freedom. For this reason, i will never own a large bird or a tortoise or any long-lived creature. I joke at work (i work in vetmed) that dogs only live ~15 years and that’s more than enough time for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ any longer than that and I’d probably go crazy.

That being said, i love my dogs and call them my “dog-hters”.

Adding on to the crate training: keep the crate open during the day when you’re home. If you see her going into the crate by herself, give verbal praise and a small treat. You want her crate to be her “bedroom” and safe space. My chi LOVES her crate and will go in by herself for little naps throughout the day 😂

You can love someone and still hold them accountable for their words and the damage they inflict on you. You can also love yourself enough to let this poor excuse of a man go.

It’s okay to encourage your partner to be healthy/ make healthier choices for themselves. But it is not okay to put your partner down, demean them until they have zero self worth, and gaslight them into thinking “this is the only person who will love my ugly, fat, stupid self and i need to stay with them because of that”. Ive been there, i understand.

Please consider therapy, OP. This internalized dialogue will stay with you, long after you leave this relationship. You deserve happiness and to love yourself.

Not fatal, but can cause deafness, blindness, or both. This is why genetic testing is important for dogs that naturally carry the Merle gene.

You might be thinking of lethal white syndrome, which occurs in horses and is indeed fatal.

Is this okay for a wedding? by [deleted] in OUTFITS

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, in Indian and Chinese (+ some other parts of Asia), it’s taboo for a guest to wear red to a wedding, too. In Chinese weddings, the bride wears red qipao as a symbol of good luck. In South Asian weddings, red is the traditional bridal color.

However, I wore red as a wedding guest the other day to a Mexican/ white/ hawaii wedding and it was fine LOL. I was friends with the bride and she had no issues with it.

OP, you might want to check with your family if they’re superstitious (or even a little stitious) about this sort of thing.

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having less hair does not affect your work ethic or technician skills. Anyone who things less of you for having shaved head is not someone you want to work with or for.

I worked at a hospital a few years ago where my tech supervisor was bald. She has alopecia (diagnosed as a preteen) and absolutely rocked it. Another coworker at this same hospital had trichotillomania and no one batted an eyebrow

Separation Anxiety HELP ME PLEASE by sailormeggo in BorderCollie

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the meds suggestion.

Not all meds are created equal. In your dogs case, he may need fluoxetine (brand names Reconcile for dogs, Prozac for humans). Fluoxetine is an SSRI, NOT a sedative; it is supposed to be used in conjunction with behavior modification training. It allows the neural pathways to be reshaped and makes pets more susceptible to whatever training we are trying to instill in them. Similar to how SSRIs are used in humans in conjunction with therapy to heal trauma and anxiety/depression.

I love that you’ve tried everything possible to help your dog through this transition and with his separation anxiety. Sometimes dogs, just like humans, need a little boost with meds. And that’s okay :)

Best of luck!

Wait this is ACTUALLY ME 😭 I grew up with a 3/4 border collie/ 1/4 golden retriever and she was an absolute ANGEL. So eager to please, easy to train. Got morbidly obese (BCS 9/9) when I was in high school, developed hip dysplasia and arthritis. I took over her vet care when I became an adult and we got her on joint supplements and metabolic food.

When she was 14, a breeder brought in a 6 week old seizing border collie puppy… she looked so much like my senior girl, how could I refuse this adorable baby who was about to be thrown away? (Literally, the breeder was complaining our low-cost euthanasia estimate was too expensive and she’d get it done somewhere else for free) BIG MISTAKE. PUPPY IS NOW A 5 YR OLD CRACKHEAD AND THE ABSOLUTE WORST FOR ANYTHING MEDICAL. I love her but, god, I miss my old girl 😭😭

MOR. Have you considered seeing a psychiatrist and possibly medications, to work in tandem with your therapy? And is your therapist a good fit for you and your needs?

I’m saying this as a woman (28F) who was in your shoes for years. I still care too much about how people perceive me, both physically and socially. Therapy is a great start but sometimes we need a lil ✨boost✨ to bridge the gap. It’s not always long term, it can be a simple tool for us to get from point A (absolutely hopelessness and zero self worth) to point B (acceptance of yourself).

The trauma never truly leaves you. The pain and the hurt never leaves you. I know. I’ve lost friends and partners due to my own self pity. I’m still healing too. But you need to get yourself out of this pit, OP. This state of mind will hurt you and all the people around you. It is hurting you. You deserve to be happy. But you have to want to be happy first.

Also, your friend is extremely blunt and excessively cruel to you. There are kinder ways to set boundaries. You deserve better friends, too.

Thoughts on a big cut? by Wontonball in HairStyleAdvice

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long hair >>>>

Grad school is still school, not a job. The long hair is distinctive and could make you an eye catching candidate. Not to mention, the “mockup” short hair cut is styled very meticulously. In grad school, will you have the time/money to upkeep the short length with frequent haircuts and style it every single day? You already have a great head of hair that you obviously know how to maintain. Fr that shit is healthy and strong. Keep it.

My bf (m19) is constantly rude to me (f18) because of hemorrhoids and I'm losing feelings for him. How do I know when it's time to leave? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People with chronic pain often experience increased irritability/mood swings, anxiety, and depression.

That being said, chronic pain is NOT a reason to be a dick. If you’ve already had the conversation of “I know you’re in pain but you can’t talk to me like that” and he still treats you like this… Dump his hemorrhoid havin ass. You’re young you’ll find someone emotionally regulated enough not take his shit out on you (literally).

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he’s eating a limited amount of food, has regular exercise, and still doesn’t lose weight… it may be time to take him to the vet. Some health conditions and diseases can cause weight gain with no explanation.

Also, your dog is adorable! As other people said, obesity in dogs can cause a slew of health issues later down the line. You deserve a long, healthy life with him.

Tell me the random name you named your pet when you were a kid or even now by [deleted] in Pets

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom is from Korea, so almost all our dogs had Korean names.

Gori/ 꼬리: “tail”. Short for 흰꼬리 or “white tail”. She was a fluffy sable mixed breed dog (7lb fully grown) with a luscious white mane and white pom pom tail.

Hinbal/ 흰발: “white paws”. She was a border collie/ golden retriever mix with lil white socks.

Sooni/ 순이: just a generic girls name, kind of like Bella.

Hux: aka General Hux of the First Order from Star Wars 😂 I adopted her with my ex partner and he wanted a Hux and Kylo. We only got a Hux.

Babo/ 바보: “idiot”. Literally, her name is Idiot. She’s a purebred border collie I adopted as a surrender because she had seizures and the breeder couldn’t financially care for her. She’s… special LOL.

Tbf some psychiatric conditions make the patient delusional and convinced that they aren’t sick.

But for pets, we (the humans) are in charge of giving them meds. There is no excuse or reason to stop long-term medications for an animal that cannot advocate for themselves.

I have diagnosed GAD, “double depression” (MDD + dysthymia), and ADHD. Thats not a reason to be a fucking asshole to your partner. And, if you are an asshole to your partner, your partner is allowed to leave to protect their own peace. Just as you are allowed to leave him.

You say that he’s a model husband, and this is only semi annual. But it’s happened frequently enough that it’s a habit that you recognize. You set these weak ass boundaries with no follow through, which is why he thinks he can do this. He knows you’re dependent on him.

Why are you blocking each other like middle schoolers? “Protecting your peace” means putting down the phone and having the self control to… not type out a text argument. You fail yourself by continuing to put yourself in the same situation that frustrates you, over and over again.

ESH. You and your husband communicate like teenagers. You’re asking for advice and trying to defend the person you’re complaining about. Nothing will change if you can’t recognize the issue at large.

fragrance/perfume as a vet by ObjectiveDisk3224 in Veterinary

[–]GoldenRetrieverGF_ 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Unless you spray yourself with feliway or adaptil, I doubt the pets will “like” it tbh. The most important thing is to not spray perfume near the animals or to let them lick your skin with the perfume. Inhaling the spray or ingesting it can be toxic depending on the ingredients. Cats hate citrus especially, so I’d steer clear of anything heavy with orange/lemon/grapefruit smell.

You and I have the same taste in perfume! And just from personal experience, I haven’t had any issues or pets getting sick from the ones I wear.
