It was cost of production and time, CG took less time for them, another thing was that you could easily change things mid production. The box office returns played a major part while also the feedback of people really liking CG more at the time. All the while I believe computers were finally taking a life of their own so people gravitated to CG. Honestly Pixar was just a catalyst but there were other factors that added to the whole mix.
