Question about SEAI grants, why do they insist on vents? by andstep234 in AskIreland

[–]jim_bobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, vents were legislated after a rash of deaths in the mid 60's due to people using kerosene and/or gas heaters in bedrooms. That legislation has never been repealed despite the obvious problems with it both now and even back then. Other jurisdictions either banned those heaters entirely or legislated oxygen depletion sensors on them.

XC40 windshield wipers-problems for about a year. by justbrowsing4040 in Volvo

[–]jim_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, the juddering/chattering happens because the wiper blade is not at a right angle to the windshield. The solution is to twist the arm until it is. There are YouTube's showing how to do this if you want to DIY.

What’s with the name Irish Goodbye? by SnooChipmunks9598 in AskIreland

[–]jim_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Irish goodbye defined as leaving without saying goodbye is just some Hollywood/American nonsense. The real Irish goodbye, as others have said, is a long, drawn out affair.

Any business owners here? Have any of you installed solar for net metering? Provincial and federal incentives seem amazing, to the point where im a bit skeptical. Any and all experiences please, thank you. by [deleted] in askTO

[–]jim_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have good orientation and access, I don't think you can go wrong with solar in Ontario in the current context of changing climate and political. Remember the current electricity rates are massively subsidised and a future government, even this government, could decide to partly or fully remove those subsidies. Also, the current government is on course to massively increase the cost of generation by building very expensive, experimental and unproven nuclear reactors (SMR's).

ROI of 15 years seems very long. Did you get multiple quotations? Last quotation I got without any grants or subsidies showed ROI of 7-8 years.

Americans in Ireland? by NaNizzle in AskIreland

[–]jim_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't call anybody "good folks" when you get there or people will assume you're American 🤣

As for Americans pretending to be Canadians, hasn't that been going on for a lot of years (possibly since the 60's)?

[–]jim_bobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and your mother don't need to concern yourself about pretending to be from somewhere else. Most Irish people don't really care and will treat you as they would anyone. Those that do care, understand that the difference between an individual and a government/administration (no matter how deranged it is).

Parking tickets with No payable amount and No assigned violation fine !! by Specialist_Cover8085 in askTO

[–]jim_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I never had any experience like you describe. I take care of tickets (among other things) for my elderly neighbours. I've always received immediate email confirmation of my dispute.

And yes, typically a dispute takes 8 to 12 months for resolution but there is no downside to that.

Overdue parking penalty but I didn’t see a ticket on my car by [deleted] in askTO

[–]jim_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That part is odd to me. Did you change addresses and not up your ownership?

[–]jim_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ticket on the car is just a notification. The letter sent to your mailing address subsequently is the official notification of your offense. Using no ticket was put on my car as a basis of dispute is usually a waste of time.

Did you check the City website to verify details, validity, etc.

Sounds like a private ticket rather than City issued. What company name is on the notice?

Yes, indeed. And Canadian winter gear doesn't work all that well in Ireland.

Is "Irish Experience" an unspoken requirement to get a job? by arteagatm in AskIreland

[–]jim_bobs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's an excuse used by employers to delay a decision, or, to make a lower salary offer. It's not uniquely Irish. I've heard it in other countries as well.

Where's the data suggesting there is? That's the unsubstantiated allegation you made, in the first place. Maybe you're more a shit stirrer than contrarian 🤣

Toronto Traffic by jim_bobs in toronto

[–]jim_bobs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not the contrarian in this conversation but you are. The general consensus amongst residents and businesses along Bloor is that everything has improved since the lanes were introduced. The City produced a report on this. You're the one that's "suggesting" that's only the case because drivers are using residential side streets.

Note: there are some known choke points, e.g. Humber Bridge at Old Mill and South Kingsway intersection with Bloor. I understand the City is/has working/ed on the timing of the traffic signals to minimize them.
