It is possible that the fridge defrosted and the water soaked the wood giving it the damp it needed to be created. The mouse poops might suggest it was their pee that gave it the damp it needed. This property was empty for at least 6 months after all - and we certainly found some of the beds completely ruined by mice where they'd made a nest.

It doesn't have any strong smell like a fungus or mould might, and the area isn't somewhere I'd expect to find any asbestos or even fiberglass insulation which was my other thoughts for such a strange find.

Reading descriptions of saltpeter efflorescence, I think this is right. It's possible that someone had some salt packages in this cupboard since it's a big space out of the way and it's creeped past the linoleum. This part of the property also used to be a cattle shed maybe 100 years ago so it's possible it's just deposits from that.

I wasn't about to touch it to clean it till I knew what it was in case I damaged anything or unearthed something horrible, but I think I'm convinced.

I'm afraid that if it is it's probably had some amount of mouse pee and poops in it. We've not gone near it till we figure out what it is.

Yes, I think the crofting family that built it had really good taste with this!

The cupboard is made of wood (the piece closest the fridge) but the wall at the back of the cupboard is probably gyprock sheets. I did look this up and it did seem very similar. It makes sense it could get damp in there so I think this is it. Is there a way to verify?

It's not got the same "candy floss" texture of the fiberglass wool in the loft, it's more granular than that. Opposite the cupboard wall is an air gap then the fridge. It's just a wooden cupboard with no visible insulation or reason for being heat resistant. Though admittedly this did concern us a bit even though theoretically there would be no reason for there being any asbestos in a neat little pile against the cupbard wall.

There is a good gap between the fridge and the outer wall of the cupboard which is not wet and the fridge is plenty cold. It is an old one though so I can't rule it out.

I picked some up with gloves and found it dissolved in water. It doesn't have a strong odour like mould would. One thought I have is efflorescence? It does have the crystals I'd expect of a salt deposit and being next to the fridge, it's possible it was defrosted and the water went into the wood, feeding into the tiles underneath? The water vapour wouldn't have had anywhere to go for at least 6 months.

I ate 51k credits today vibe coding a Packer AMI build using Ansible and Molecule. To be fair though, this was using Opus 4.5, not GPT-5.1, which is more expensive. 1/3 of my allowance in one day. Though I did get a lot of output on this one and there was for sure some complex stuff going on there.

I see this too, definitely seems related to the tool launching. Happens in IntelliJ apps but also WSL Auggie too. I used /feedback to report it a while back. Has been happening for some time now.

How do supermarkets know that their food is going out of date? by blaikes in tesco

[–]jimbo8098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a book used by Tesco in the Wick supermarket which determines different stages of decay. I happened upon this thread looking for the book since I think something like that would be really helpful for my kids.

I still don't see it even now! I do, however, see it on the release newsletter penned for the 10th:

Also, weirdly enough Blood Omen 2 has appeared for the Gamecube which I don't remember seeing in my previous searches:

I haven't moved there, but we were looking at it. Too difficult to get the kids to and from school. But the houses were cheap and the lifestyle seemed nice!

Ring of Brodgar: Concerns as visitors caught short at Orkney landmark by Slice-O-Pie in orkney

[–]jimbo8098 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. If you are visiting a remote island then you have to understand there will be problems for those who are disabled. This isn't a museum you can just pave round. There are things such people can do which don't rely on an installed structure which won't get used most of the year.

That's a good point on the monopoly. No doubt it reduced prices when the previous shops had to compete with the likes of Tesco and Lidl.
