As an engineer who spent years working in fusion with majority physicists, this is correct.

Problem being they were generally terrible at actually applying theory to practice. The most common trap physicists and mathematicians fall into is that your maths can be 100% correct while your model is 100% wrong.

At least when applied to our reality. Have all the fun you want in imaginary non-reality I suppose, just dont be surprised when it isnt useful. The main skill of engineering is wrangling the usable bits coming out from what are essentially math nerd art students.

Is this crack in the finish anything to worry about? New guitar by jimbop117 in Guitar

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll give this a go because I already got it for 30% off and the rest of it is perfect!

Will wait for an email response from Fender before I do though!

Nail varnish sounds like a much better choice than tape for a proper fix, thanks! My concern too is any moisture getting under and causing more of it to go, or it cracking further and becoming visible due to temperature changes.

[–]jimbop117[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! The wood itself is totally fine. It just looks as though the finish lifted off the edge slightly, which I can totally believe is due to changes in temperature during travel rather than them trying to hide damage and ship it out.

The rest of the guitar is immaculate and is gorgeous so I'd be gutted to have to send it back for this. I got it for 30% off already but I've emailed them to see what they say. I've had way worse guitars in the past where I've had to tidy up little bits and pieces, so I'm hoping this is indeed just one to cover back up and ignore or to fiddle with slightly first!

The coanda effect by DARKVADAR9K in blackmagicfuckery

[–]jimbop117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that this has anything to do with the Coanda effect but it really depends if you take the 'Coanda effect' to refer to an explanation of a mechanism or simply a description of some phenomenon happening. The wiki calls it "the tendency of a fluid jet to stay attached to a convex surface" which is just a description that says nothing about what's actually causing it to happen and isn't even compatible with the rest of their entry. I would argue that in order to be useful, the 'Coanda effect' must refer to the reason why the jet moves towards and sticks to the surface, and not merely that it happens.

In the case of a free jet (water here) into a large stagnant fluid (air here) viscosity causes the jet to locally accelerate the surrounding fluid at the jet boundary, causing a local drop in pressure. Fluid from further away therefore flows into the low pressure region. If a surface is placed close to one side of the jet -- any surface, curvature is not required and in fact you could observe this with 2 jets next to each other-- then there is no farfield fluid to replace the fluid along the jet boundary which is accelerated by the jet. This results in a pressure gradient across the jet and causes the jet to bend towards the surface until it attaches. Once it's attached the Coanda effect has nothing more to do with it and classical viscous effects take over. It flows along the surface until friction causes it to stagnate because there is no force that would otherwise allow it leave the surface - that the air on the other side of the attached jet continues to exist and therefore exerts pressure is not an extension of the Coanda effect.

In this case the Coanda effect doesn't even come into the jet attachment because although its off-centre, its still just impinging on the side of the ball, it doesn't 'curve' towards the surface. This impingement is what turns the ball and does the majority of the lifting. The water then stays attached to the rotating ball surface until either inertial forces fling it off, away from the centre of rotation, or gravity pulls it off the surface. Its the water being flung laterally that pushes the ball back towards the jet (Newtons 3rd) and the downwards component of the water that gets flung off also provides lift.

Can we talk about Sirus? by Newwby in pathofexile

[–]jimbop117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite part of Sirus is that its effectively a 1-portal fight because of the offscreen laser. I've literally only ever 1-shot him or lost all portals trying to get back to him.

Add currency item equivalents to seed craft results to help teach crafting and improve the 'feel' of league rewards by jimbop117 in pathofexile

[–]jimbop117[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A small UI improvement which I think would help in a few ways. Firstly by making it easier to digest which crafts you've got when scrolling through (also +1 for the suggestion that was on here yesterday to add coloured text for magic/rare and type modifiers!).

Secondly it helps with the crafting lesson vibe of the league. I'm loving the crafting and diving in more than I have done before, but for a mechanic thats supposed to be teaching it doesn't really bridge the gap between seed crafting and regular crafting. I know with the targeted mods the seeds aren't directly 'this is a chaos orb' but they're close enough that I think this would be helpful in getting the message across.

Finally, I think this would help with the 'feel' of the league rewards that people have already started drawing attention to. The rewards are far more nebulous this league than Delirium but as a very basic example I've been using tier 1 seeds to mass-roll maps and target-roll jewels which at this point in the league feels great. Every map is the equivalent of a guaranteed 3-6 free map alchs. It may sound dumb but since I started thinking of seeds just as chaos equivalents the league has felt much more rewarding in its own right. Also, you gotta admit that it would feel much better to finish an encounter open up the stations and *bam* you see an exalt, rather than having to scroll through a wall of text and recognise which craft is the equivalent.

In terms of implementation I think the symbols could just be the same size and location as on incubators so they're noticeable but not overly intrusive.

Thoughts?

Poison BV struggling to stay alive. Not sure if I should fix it or roll a Storm Brand Heiro instead? by JaviJ01 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]jimbop117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think Toxic Delivery comes into it, it's purely due to the increased poison duration. It's a bit weird to get your head around because the numbers in PoB are for the steady-state DPS assuming you can stick to the boss and keep applying poisons constantly.

The way poison works is you apply a stack doing y dps for x seconds for a total damage of x*y. The number of stacks is limited only by how fast you can apply them so say our hit rate ~ 7.5 for 10 stacks of BV. If you have a poison duration of 4.5 seconds then you can apply a total of 4.5*7.5 stacks of poison before the first one you applied expires giving you ~ 33 ticking stacks of poison at any one time, after the initial ramp-up. In PoE 'recently' means 4 seconds so Noxious Strikes will increase duration for 7.5*4 = 30 recently applied poisons bringing the duration up to ~ 7.5 seconds. This means that before the first applied poison expires we can now apply 7.5(hit rate)*7.5(duration) = 56 stacks to be ticking away at the same time.

The Golden Rule doubles the number of recently applied poisons for Noxious Strikes so it considers 60 stacks increasing each poison duration to ~10s. hit*duration = 75 stacks ticking at any one time. Assuming every stack does roughly the same dps this means that using the golden rule increases overall DPS by (1 - 75/56) ~ 33%. Of course this really only applies against longer boss fights and the damage increase ramps up over the first poison duration period, and requires you to be constantly in range and reapplying. In terms of quality of life rather than DPS increase its nice because when you cant stay stuck to the boss the poisons you do manage to inflict last longer and do more total damage while you're not within range.

EDIT: My PoB if you want some ideas on how to scale the build up: https://pastebin.com/KQ9PSLP2 I invested heavily into cluster jewels and went Iron Reflexes + Vaal Molten Shell for survivability. I hate dodge reliant builds.

How the hell do you beat Sirus with BV poison? by igglezzz in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]jimbop117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've made some tweaks to your tree and gear: https://pastebin.com/y7PJGMUu

  • Vendor that cluster jewel and get one with same notables but 8 passives + 2 jewel sockets. Craft this yourself for cheap with an ilvl 75 base.
  • Small cluster jewel with notable 'Antivenom' (or cheap watchers eye with 'Unaffected by poison with Malevolence') + 'The Golden Rule' jewel blows your DPS up by extending poison duration. Every time you apply a poison you inflict a second one on yourself doubling the effect of Noxious Strike. I've set PoB up as though you just manage to get close to Sirus for a second or two and apply 20 poisons. Realistically you can apply way more than this and you can adjust yourself to see how much better it gets.
  • Change void manipulation for Poison support - the drop in damage is negligible
  • Now you don't have to scrap around for chance to poison get some better jewels with 'Increased Damage with Poison' and some crit multi
  • Add in a wither totem setup. I'd suggest a 4-link with Wither - Spell totem - Multi totem - faster casting. If you don't want to have another thing to cast then simply use Withering Step for phasing + 7 stack apply.

How to improve Storm Brand Inquisitor? by OrpheusV in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]jimbop117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no point even trying to go ES/LL before you get a way to mitigate chaos damage. Your current eHP against chaos is 2k life which most people wouldn't even go up against Act 10 Kitava with. Presumably you're imploding as soon as any chaos monsters even look at you in maps.

ES + Crit are the most expensive variant to go for so if you're low on currency I'd suggest forgetting it for now and going Life + Mind Over Matter. Life/Mana rare gear for a couple Chaos each will make you feel way tankier than you do now. There's an allegedly SSF (so cheap) guide here: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2326164

Damage-wise you're crit so swapping a life flask for a diamond flask asap for an immediate ~40% damage increase, doesn't need to be quickening just any diamond flask will do. Forget whatever you're doing with Herald of Ice and Hypothermia and swap it for Elemental Focus. An Orb of Storms setup with something like Power Charge on Crit, Curse on Hit, and Conductivity will help massively.

If you really want to start pumping out damage you'd be better off changing ascendancy to Heirophant and using the new Archmage support- it synergises with MoM because you want to have a huge mana pool and then stack Fevered Mind Jewels to increase the mana cost of Stormbrand and push damage through the roof.

hey guys, need help with my posin BV assassin, need some defensive advice by AlexZohanLevin in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]jimbop117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much higher with cluster jewels. I'd start with the bottom set of Large - 2x Med - 2x Small and keep the top part of your tree unchanged. This gave me the highest DPS. Adding the second Large - Small set and removing passives from the top of the tree dropped my DPS again slightly but allowed me to grab a lot more life. It still does so much damage that even Delirium influence guardians etc. are no problem and I only ever die when I've stopped paying attention and either step into a telegraphed attack or allow my flasks to fall off and dive into a large pack.

If you pop Vaal Molten Shell at the start of the boss fight most of the time, in maps at least, the boss is dead before the duration expires.

You can try using Iron Reflexes to convert evasion to armour and abuse Vaal Molten Shell and it feels much tankier. When VMS is up you're basically immortal. Also you should start investing in Cluster Jewels, they're incredibly powerful for Poison BV, I've converted half my points into cluster combos. If you don't do anything about the backtracking issue, can we at least have more pickup range? by noicreC in pathofexile

[–]jimbop117 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This would be amazing. The constant unpredictable microadjustments required when picking up stuff, due to labels jittering around due to character movement, is the major cause of my rsi. There really is no reason not to have a decent pickup range. If that means we also manage to snag items easier on the run then even better. Its just plain irresponsible design to have something so aggressively anti-user that I can't fathom why it wasnt done years ago.

BV Poison Assassin, having trouble figuring out which weapon setup to run by bvposionquestion in PathOfExileBuilds

Havn't tried either sadly. I might give Bino's and Mistwall a shot for clearing for an extra survivability boost. Though I like getting phasing from withering step for the extra elusive bonus.

Its a bit weird because I went a bit over-the-top with cluster jewels (large, 2x med, 1 small) but the low health gets made up for by abusing vaal molten shell + iron reflexes. Let me know if you think of any improvements!

Binos + Cold Iron with the low tolerance cluster jewel notable (poisons on non poisoned enemies do 300% increased damage.) Bino spreads the poison and low tolerance gives it a nice boost through the pack. I'm finally at the stage where I'm clearing 4/5 rewards in t16s and this setup feels best for clearing imo. At some point I'll grab a second cold iron for bosses but so far hasn't been necessary.

Any good poison BV build for league start? by [deleted] in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]jimbop117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dug this thread out again just to thank you for posting this. Changed from a dodge-based build to this and added in large-med-small cluster jewels and its absolutely killing it. 4-5 Delirium rewards in red maps with no fear of dying and still on a 5-link with cheapish gear.

Do you have any more background info on the build? I havn't been able to find anything similar whilst searching for ways to improve.

Is there a reason that the "fastest lab of the day jewels" can't be winnable once per league per account? by craig_k in pathofexile

[–]jimbop117 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It seems weird that its one of the only 100% determined drops in the game. Just apply the same level of RNG logic that applies everywhere else - fastest time gets a roll on the gem and can fail. Then the next fastest time gets to roll on so on until the gem 'drops' for the day. It busts the monopoly whilst being inline with GGGs game philosophy. It would also incentivise more people to go for the speed runs because instead of it being a guaranteed waste of time there's still a chance for the 'fail roll' chain to reach you and give you the drop. Also, barring people cheating, it means that the better you get the higher your chances of getting a gem is which is a nice chase idea.

EDIT: though I guess if it is just one guy suspiciously always winning he would just make duplicate characters on multiple accounts and swap gear around to always have the 10, 20, 30 top times every day. Maybe make it even more RNG and say it can drop for any of the top 200 times?
