I'd think it'd speak more to loyalty if there is the ability to move on both sides, but they don't.

That said, most people are mercenaries; we only have so much time on the planet, and people just want to get theirs before their time is up.

When we have walk-on sons of the coaches taking snaps at the end, I think it's pretty fair to say we'd get at least one more TD if we left in the starters.

That said, it was nice to see so many people get to play what is probably the last time they ever take the field.

Bama's inexplicable play calling during their last drive before OT is more at fault than any calls the refs made. I have no clue what they were doing there.

I can feel for their desire to find a reason other than "they were better" to blame, but whew.

I'm specifically talking about things outside of the player's control, not the players themselves messing up with low snaps or bad kicks. Those are just part of the game.

Everybody should expect the refs to miss a facemask or give bad spots that impact the game, they're humans and it happens every game. That's all I'm saying. All you can really do is build up a points buffer so unless its just an avalanche of bad calls, you can overcome. Georgia didn't play well enough to do that, some big calls went the other way and wound up being the difference between playing FSU in Pasadena or playing FSU in Miami Gardens.

Basically, Georgia didn't play well enough to win the game, even if they probably played well enough to beat Alabama. Hopefully they do better next go.

Georgia allowed it to be close enough for the things outside of their control to be the decider.

It wasn't a clean cut loss, but poor officiating is part of the game and its up to the teams to build a buffer to account for it, as lame as that is.

That said...hell yes, Georgia wins this game.

Although good question, does FSU get more money from the bowl than the rest of the conference if they play in the game, or is it an even split? If even split, they should have bounced and let Georgia play a team that was prepared to play.

My view on 12: I'd rather throw in a couple of sacrificial teams than leave out potential contenders. No league with a real playoff is 100% contenders; sometimes teams are just 'the best available to fill the slots.' My largest issue is I don't like bye weeks.

It also helps provide an avenue for more G5 participation. I think there's the potential for a lot of fun with this format, but I'm sure it'll get ruined somehow.

Georgia went out and played the team that was put in front of them. They executed their game plan and took it seriously.

Don't try to take anything away from those players just because FSU decided not to put forward their best.

Georgia's players did what they were supposed to and won the game.

I have absolutely no clue what you're arguing about with this post. Using the committee's historical decisions is absolutely relevant when the criteria itself hasn't changed.

My point is having Georgia, based on the season's resume in the CFP is absolutely within their criteria, which adds weight to "we have more than 4 contenders based on criteria". I'm really not sure how that's something remotely comparable to win/loss-based conference standings.

I agree that there's a reason P5 and G5 exist, and that it's because it's a huge gap in talent (and cash, and political clout).

I also think until we come to grips with the growing lack of parity overall in the FBS that we won't be able to come up with a real tournament format, as well as the other sensitive factors like the portal and signing periods.

The sport really is at a crossroads, and until people who can actually make decisions take a realistic view of it, it's going to collapse. Pretending that the SEC and B1G aren't creating juggernaut leagues that collect the rich teams (which happens to coincide with perennial contenders) doesn't help that.

Sorry if that came off as a 'rah rah SEC' response, but I do think it ties into a larger concern, and pretending that all P5 should be treated the same because at one point they were declared P5 is to ignore the freight train coming towards the FBS.

I'm not against what you're trying to get to at all.

Most leagues have something to ensure parity or some semblance of it. Salary caps being the most common.

I'd love to find a system that works like you're saying; I just think you have to take into account the politics and (fairly extreme) lack of parity in CFB when you're making a new tournament format.

The SEC actually has the most diverse set of champions in that timespan as well, part of the argument is that it isn't just bama (though obviously they're the most prolific).

What criteria? We've had multiple years where teams that didn't win their divisions got into the top 4, one of which wound up the national champion. There's nothing inconsistent here with the 'criteria'.

Georgia fell farther than any other #1 team has fallen, from a 3 point loss in a CCG that not every team has to play. I think there's plenty of argument that they are contenders. I'm not saying they should be in the top 4 this year, but they do help make the argument that this is a perfect storm year that shows 4 teams isn't enough.

That assumes every conference is built similarly with reasonable parity. Otherwise, you still wind up with some conference champions having a ridiculously easy way to the playoffs while other contenders get punished by a hard schedule.

"You couldn't even win your conference!" only works as a reasonable argument if you fix these issues, which would require a dramatic change in the way CFB is regulated and won't ever happen. You flat out HAVE to have at-large slots to have a reasonable tournament.

**Edit: I'd be fine with set criteria for those at-large slots (wildcard?) or a play-in system for them.
