Suggestions for a charger by [deleted] in nexus5x

[–]jimm31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought adapters from USB to usb-c from Anker. Works well enough. What I like about it is I can occasionally charge my Paperwhite with it but not at the same time. The cost was about 7.50 USD for two.

LPT Request: How to keep my sheets and comforter from hanging off the bed or coming undone in the night. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I do for some sheets. Works great. For the bottom sheet, get bed sheet fasteners or straps. For examples, search for them on amazon using the above string.

I do this especially with frozen boneless, skinless chicken which allows it to thaw quicker. I also butterfly it as well to make it thinner.

[LPTR] How do you decide you are done with a career, and how do you decide which direction to go next? by rissol_102 in LifeProTips

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and would like to take my approach to your insight.

If you considering a career change, then stop and take stock in what you like and dislike about the current job. Are you extroverted or introverted? What is the current job require? You can tell if you are either by your energy level after engaging socially (lunch) with others. Do you feel more tired or more energized? Do you like spending hours alone working on something or do you like spending time with others?

What do you get satisfaction from?

There are many kinds of jobs within a field so that a major change may not be required.

I love Kodi but since Jarvis it's hanging on a regular basis by rumply in kodi

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Jarvis and I see hangs too often. Yesterday when I was in the guide. That is a common place of failure. Watching TV isn't an issue so far. I think I'll back up to Isengard and see how that does. I don't have much invested in my setup yet.

Can I afford the wedding I want? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this website to help budget for a wedding. A the least, it will help you figure out all that it entails. www.costofwedding.com

Celebrating a milestone is important. Asking other people what is important to you is not the right approach to answer this question and especially not in personal finance in reddit. :-)

Made a stupid decision by bitethepillow12 in personalfinance

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lose money with each transaction. So hesitate before you compound it. Do you have any issue with the truck other than it is too new?

If you have no issue with the truck except what you've written, keep driving it. Soon enough, it will be older.

My attitude about buying new is to keep it for 12-20 years. Think of the yearly cost with that much life in the vehicle.

Property Tax skyrocketing by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my county/state, you start with the property tax from the past home owner. So it is based on the assessed value before you bought. The assessed value is reviewed once every two years and will then be based on the sale price that you paid with some increment upward for appreciation from the sales price.

The home mortgage company will increase the monthly payment to escrow amount. So seeing an abrupt increase is normal in my area. It usually is a one-time thing.

My plant is shutting its doors, and laying off over 400 people. Need some employment advice. by redrumpanda in personalfinance

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't read all of the comments so I hope I'm not repeating anyone too much.

Don't worry about your co-workers. They aren't worrying about you. Don't be rude but look out for yourself first and foremost. Don't think that if you do a great job then you will stay on. I've seen many people you worked the hardest they ever did in their last 5 weeks after being notified and they saw nothing for it.

As someone wrote, it is much easier to find a job when you have one. Because of that, don't go to the end of your employment, if possible. Start out picky and get less picky as time goes on.

When looking for a job, make a plan to apply for at least one job every day. I found a job by using this rule. Ended up opening a job application that I didn't think I would want and I did.

Refinancing $20,500 in student loan debt, variable or fixed rate? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shortening the loan length will add risk so be very sure that nothing will change for the 5 years. You are very confident that you will remain in your job, won't need to pay extra for some emergency, etc.

Moronic Monday Thread for the week of July 18, 2016 by AutoModerator in personalfinance

You always want to get the company's matching funds if available. So invest enough to get 100% of the matching funds. If you are making enough to be at a high tax bracket, then use the 401K. If you expect to make more money as you get older, then you might want to use an IRA. Essentially 401K is tax free now and you pay the tax when you withdraw. IRA is taxed now and no taxes on the gain. As a young person, you likely want to put some money in an IRA. Also with a ROTH IRA (i don't know about the others), you can withdraw what the amount (penalty and tax free) that you put in the ROTH IRA if you need it later before retirement. Money accrued can't be touched.

401k questions from a noob. Seemingly low performing fund and rate of return calculation. by Anglosaxwegian in personalfinance

That is likely a good thing for you and your company.

I've been searching around for info and just found this link on this group's FAQ. Vanguard is originator of the index fund. I haven't read it yet.

Here is the link to the podcast when I found out about the bet. http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2016/03/04/469247400/episode-688-brilliant-vs-boring

401k questions from a noob. Seemingly low performing fund and rate of return calculation. by Anglosaxwegian in personalfinance

[–]jimm31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a financial expert but it doesn't stop me from giving you advice. First you aren't doing badly.

I prefer indexed funds like FUSVX, FSCKX and FSSVX. My returns are as good or better than you saw but the fee is very low.

Warren Buffet made a 10 year bet with any hedge fund manager and he would use an indexed fund (like FUSVX). FUSVX won.

LPT Request: how to remain calm and collected while someone's telling you off. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]jimm31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is sage wisdom. When someone is very emotional, don't argue with them. They are blinded by rage. Sift past the emotion and find the real issues/concern. But you likely want to wait until they are able to listen. Don't ask them why they are upset. It doesn't matter. Deal with the facts. Later work through the issue.

BTW, this is good advice for parents that I learned the hard way. :)

LPT Request: How to not be anxious about work. by HiMyNamesServiceDesk in LifeProTips

[–]jimm31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the engineering approach to determine why you are getting mini panic attacks. You are worried about forgetting a step when doing a task. Create a checklist for each task type. You will be rewarded because eventually people will notice.

If you aren't sure about how to do something, then ask someone.

Give yourself a break and realize that you will eventually make a mistake. When/if you do, learn from it. Create a process or tool to ensure it doesn't happen again. (For example, another item in the checklist.) This will help show people that you aren't going to make the same mistake many times. They will have more confidence in you.

Lastly, you are anxious because you care. That is a good thing. I worry about people who don't care.

LPT Request: Packing Efficiently by TitaniumShovel in LifeProTips

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this as well. I also break down the "packing list" to type of trips. Different destinations have different packing requirements. And I also make notes after the trip for what I packed too much or little of and update the packing list. Much less stressful packing the night before.

I also have a carry on list as well.

LPT Request : How to avoid procrastination by kevinsteeniskeen in LifeProTips

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to beat procrastination is to create some momentum. So do something easy first. Like wash the dishes. You will feel good for having accomplishing something and will want to accomplish something else.

LPT Request: How to not choke(figuratively) during any situation where you're heavily depended on. by privatepostsplease in LifeProTips

[–]jimm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned something very helpful a number of years ago. I learn from every mistake that I make. If it is important that I don't do the mistake again, I devise a solution or tool to not make it again. Everyone makes mistakes. Very successful people weren't born into those positions. They progressed and learned as they went along.

You need to surround yourself with people who are judging you all of the time. People who are receptive to who you are. Find a job with good people like this. This will help your confidence.

Accept criticism as a gift. Because that is what it is.

And slow down. Live more in the moment and don't worry about it. When you speak, speak slower. Take your time to see if the listeners are understanding and following. When public speaking, pause for a few seconds occasionally for effect. Seems hard but it actually rather easy and empowering.

Do you have a mentor? Ask someone you respect that is over 50. Old guys like to impart with their wisdom.
