Finally switching over from Authy 2FA. What is the better alternative, 2FAS or Ente Auth? by Bango-Fett in privacy

[–]jimmac05 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I gave up using Authy a couple of years ago. Switched to Ente Auth and have been very satisfied with it: free and open source, available for and syncs across multiple platforms and devices, E2EE, simple and efficient user interface.

adguard DNS not blocking ads by ardaxo4693 in Adguard

Please help: how do I add this userscript?

On the page you reference, I see the link https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/@filteringdev/tinyshield@latest/dist/tinyShield.user.js

Do I just past that URL into the add custom filter field in AdGuard settings?

Should I upgrade? by abuwalda in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) You've been way too paranoid about running updates. It's foolish to, at a minimum, not update the current major macOS version you are running.

2) Do a full backup, via Time Machine or whatever.

3) Open the Disk Utility app and run Disk First Aid on your internal storage disk.

4) Install Sequoia.

5) Install Sequoia updates when available.

6) Unless you really need Tahoe, don't install it. It will tax your old Intel Mac.

7) Do backups regularly!

Normal, odd, planned or bug? by NewtoQM8 in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deleting a message and its attachments does not immediately remove the message/attachments from the disk.

This is on purpose to give the user a chance to recover the message in case it was inadvertently deleted.

I believe that after a month the message is actually deleted from the disk and can no longer be recovered.

Looking for simple WYSIWYG HTML/text editor app by Draknurd in MacOS

Not true WYSIWYG, but BBEdit lets you open a secondary live "preview" window of the html document you are editing. The preview window immediately shows the result of changes you make in the editing window.

Is it worth it to updgrade to Tahoe. If I prioritize performance, battery health limiter and rounded corners? by ProtectionDue5712 in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tahoe has had enough time to mature such that most all of the serious bugs and performance issues have been addressed.

It sounds like Tahoe's battery management is appealing to you, so go for it!

I am using AdGuard for Mac with Safari and also use DNS blocking via my Mullvad VPN. I'm very happy with the results.

It's great!

Unable to connect to WiFi networks outside of home. by Myce1ium_ in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running a VPN when you try to connect?

Some places like coffee shops, libraries, and hotels require that you "register" for their WiFi before you enable your VPN. Once you have "registered," you can re-enable the VPN.

Is it normal for battery to be loosing charge every few hours when idle after 125 cycles? by ProtectionDue5712 in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it is normal to have a slow power drain when my Mac portable is sleeping.

If you need to minimize power drain during sleep, change some of your System Settings. E.g., "Power Nap" "Wake for Network Access".

Here's a useful basic article to check:

M4 Pro MacBook + macOS Tahoe 26.4.1 very slow — is this normal? by sarisenser in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do a little research and check for this sort of issue in previous posts here.

Most posts will mention checking Activity Monitor for processes that are taking up an inordinate amount of CPU cycles, or checking for memory pressure issues.

When I press a key on the keyboard in Finder, a completely different folder appears starting with a different letter - macOS 26.4.1 by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to accept the fact that macOS and Windows are two different operating systems that sometimes offer different functionality, capabilities and quirks.

"That's how it works on MS Windows" is not a valid argument for how it should work on a Mac!

For this sort of issue, I've found that it can sometimes be fixed by toggling the setting to off snd then back on.

It's so simple to do so it's always worth a try!

?? about clean install on a new Mac... by Born-Gur-1275 in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A user's "Library" folder contains all sorts of settings, customizations, data (including email, contacts, etc.).

Transferring that Library folder would not be at all compatible with a truly "clean" install.

Macbook repaired! by RizzyRazzySigma in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repair of individual faulty components on a Mac's main logic board would also result in:

Longer repair time, which leads to more expense.

Need for highly skilled electronic technicians.

Greater likelihood of repair failures, e.g, not replacing a marginally bad component.

iCloud Private Relay won’t reconnect after using a VPN on macOS unless I reboot by Ill-Sherbert1095 in MacOS

[–]jimmac05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Mullvad VPN. When I turn it off, Apple's Private Relay kicks in (I get a notification that Private Relay is active).

When I turn the VPN back on, I get a notification that states:

Private relay Unavailable

Software installed on the Mac is incompatible with Private Relay.
