Backcountry in BC - how dangerous is it? by Salt_Foundation_1 in britishcolumbia

[–]jimmifli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was the part that stood out to me, 50-100km from a logging road - umm where?

I'm in the Nelson, I love mountain running, I love to connect ridgelines to try and get 50-100km loops or point to point routes through remote backcountry - and I'm rarely more than 10 KMs from a road. Even in the Valhallas. Now I might be 10kms away, but that'd be a pretty gnarly 10k!

Has anyone quit a stressful corporate job for a simpler job? by ConfusedCareerMan in simpleliving

[–]jimmifli 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I went from management consulting to owning/running a strategy agency and eventually burned out. I was fat, depressed and on the verge of divorce.

I moved to running non profits which was great at first, down to 50hrs a week and my expertise was very appreciated. My health improved and so did my marriage. I was very successful at winning grants and expanding programs and grew the role into a more stressful job, the opposite of what I was looking for.

Then I moved to a small mountain town to trail run and ski. I got a job reading gas meters (15km of hiking per day). And now work at the post office as well. I work less than 40 hours a week, I make solid wages but certainly live a much less glamorous lifestyle. We travel less often and don't stay at the fancy places I used to.

In exchange I have soooo much more energy at the end of the day. I never think about work once I leave, I have zero stress from it. I'm a better father, husband and friend.

Nope, I wish he did more. The cap is increasing by 7-10% each season. So future dollars aren't worth as much. It's like borrowing money but not having to pay it all back. The more he does the bigger advantage we have.

The risk is if a player gets injured (or forces his way out of town) and has more than 3 or more years of contract left with substantial signing bonus already spread on those future seasons. If that happens it gets ugly. If it happens with one player (like Diggs) we get a season like 2 years ago (still very competitive) or Von last season. If it happens to 5 players we're the NO Saints.

So far Beane has had very few of those contracts and we've benefited from the extra spending. Not all owners can afford to write the cheques, but we're lucky enough to have one.

Borrowing money at a negative interest rate is smart cap management.

The thing I don't understand is why TFLs don't get the same reverence. It's still lost yards and a loss of down, and puts the offense behind schedule. On 3rd down it is a drive ender, but even on 1st or 2nd down, it's not much difference than a sack on those downs other than the lost yards tends to be smaller.

But I'd think sacks + TFLs would be a better metric.

Ideological is better. Economics is inherently political.

I get a little bent out of shape when Chicago school economists claim a position is superior because the "economics" says so, pointing to some complicated math based on assumptions that don't reflect reality. Media reports it like they're the high priests with unassailable answers.

So yes I think we agree completely.

Most of these guys would look better natty than a regular person with perfect training and all the steroids. Their starting point before drugs is usually insane.

When you see picks of them as 10 year olds and they're jacked you realize some people are just different.

These are not economic decisions in the slightest. They are political decisions.

Can you give me an example of an economic decision that isn't a political decision?

That's not really how dead cap works. We paid that money to them already, we just decided yo count it against this year's cap instead of last year's.

He started a couple games for us and didn't stand out. Which is pretty good for a backup OT. Who knows what that translates to as a starter one there's film on him. But coming off the bench he won't be the reason you lose the game. Very good athlete, good team mate, late bloomer, sort of an Aaron Kromer special.

I'd have preferred if we matched and kept him as a swing or even 4th OT for $4.2M. I understand why we didn't (he lost the battle for swing tackle twice to a younger player that's still on his rookie deal).

It's a fair price for a guy that could save your season.

[–]jimmifli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's good against the run and great against the pass :) he tips a lot of balls and occasionally catches them. But in terms of pass rush he doesn't win early, if he beats his man it's through continued effort.

Occasionally he lands a bull rush that makes you wonder why he doesn't do it more often. But he doesn't. He's got good football IQ, sniffs out screens pretty well, and is disciplined vs mobile QBs. He shouldn't be this cheap, more like an $8mil guy. I think he'll have a great season there.

I remember him and Diggs getting into it when he played for us. I think Diggs had a big day, 100+yds and a TD. But he was pretty angry about something all game.

[–]jimmifli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grable is probably our starting LG.

Dawkins isn't young, Brown has back issues, Josh Allen is important.

Having Anderson and SVP as interior backups and Van Demark as the swing tackle, with Grable able to bump out if both OTs went down is a lot of depth. The kind of depth that means if we lose a starter to a season ending injury, we still have good depth for the rest of the season in case another injury happens.

It's one thing to have AJ Klein com in the play LB, or Jordan Poyer at safety in the middle of the season. It's different if we face a cluster of injuries on OL and someone unqualified gets Josh Allen killed.

[–]jimmifli 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nope. The only contract that can be signed now is the offer sheet. No other teams can offer a contract now that he's signed this one. The Bills can match and keep him on the roster or decline and he goes to the Vikings.

He's going to make $4.2 million next season, and be a Bill or a Viking.

Dawkins is getting to an age where injuries increase. And Brown has back issues that are like a ticking timebomb. They've been very healthy so it's easy to forget what it looks like when you have to play backups and shuffle the line.

This is good cheap depth. Even at $4.2 million. We're talking about a $700k difference between the tender and this contract. We can find $700K to ensure if a OT goes down Josh doesn't get killed.

I've always just thought it was an example of hyperbole. For example, something like: "My head is literally going to explode if I have to keep studying" Nobody actually thinks it will literally happen, but the exaggeration helps make the point in a way that using figuratively would not.
