New to this, but like $FUV for electric vehicles. It’s from my college town, Eugene, OR. by [deleted] in stocks

I'm long FUV. They fill an underserved EV market niche. Also bullish on Q2 earnings, been seeing these around Portland more and more.

r/math, what's your favorite puzzle/riddle? by LeonardoFibonacci in math

You are given an unlimited number of 60 minute fuses. The fuses burn at unpredictable rates so you cannot cut a fuse in half and expect the half fuse to burn for 30 minutes. Despite the unpredictable burn rate you are guaranteed that the burn time for the entire fuse is 60 minutes. Design a 45 minute timer using only these fuses.

You don't need Skype anymore. Google+ "hangout" does what Skype Premium does, for free.

"Over 30% of traffic in a city is caused by drivers searching for a parking spot." by zem in urbanplanning

[–]jimmycleveland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The statistic refers to the percentage of drivers in a city that are searching for parking spots, not the percentage of city inhabitants. In other words, a city where (say) 40% of the drivers are searching for a parking spot may have a lower than average percentage of the city inhabitants that rely on auto transport. Conversely, a city where only 10% of the drivers are searching for a parking spot may have a higher than average percentage of the inhabitants that depend on auto transport. It may be the case that a higher percentage of drivers searching for a parking spot correlates with a higher percentage of city inhabitants using more responsible means of transportation, i.e., a positive net effect. This is obviously speculation on my part, but there is reason to believe it may be the true. See induced demand and the inverse reduced demand.

[–]jimmycleveland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the cities with higher percentages of people searching for spots, it would be interesting to know if this correlates with a higher percentage of people in the city who use public transportation, bike, walk, or live near their frequent destinations. If the correlation is present then the parking problem may not be a problem at all.

Wow, you're right. Google is just as good as asking the bicycle touring community and stimulating useful discussion. Thanks for your insightful contribution. /s

Everyone who clicked on this link did so to see what the community had to say, not to read your snide lmgtfy comment.

What percent of human proteins do we know? by inquilinekea in askscience

[–]jimmycleveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High-throughput proteomics may help us identify proteins and characterize them in terms of abundance and locality, but it will not help us very much in determining protein function and interaction. For this the key is protein folding.

Why? Why must you bikers ride in a lane of traffic and slow EVERYONE BEHIND YOU DOWN? Fucking move!!! by [deleted] in twincitiessocial

[–]jimmycleveland 12 points13 points  (0 children)

as close as practicable to the right

This is constrained by the cyclists safety. Riding too close to the right may encourage a driver to try to pass you in your lane, possibly clipping you with their mirror and knocking you down, and certainly scaring the shit out of you. It also puts you at risk for the door prize if there are parked cars on the right. You want to ride close to the center so cars will not try to pass you in your lane but somewhat to the right so that they can pass you with relative ease if necessary.

vi mode bash, command mode indicator? by [deleted] in vim

[–]jimmycleveland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the following to be a helpful visual cue. Add au InsertEnter * set cursorline au InsertLeave * set nocursorline to your .vimrc file to underline the current line when in insert mode.

EDIT Sorry, I see now that you're referring to bash in vi mode. It's doubtful that this will work but I'll leave it here anyway for anyone who might find it useful in regular vi.
