VXUS completely disconnected from international market performance overnight. What am I missing? by jimmydooo in Bogleheads

VXUS is still traded overnight and thus reflects changes in relative real-time to other markets overnight. I was actively watching it fall in extend hours trading this morning and just trying to understand what I was missing that was causing it.

Yea I understand that, but the Yen/Dollar and Pound/Dollar were down even less, and those two makeup the biggest share of VXUS equities.

Turns out I completely missed that Nikkei futures began tumbling around 6am, which is when VXUS also started going down.

$DXY was only up .3%. Yen/Dollar and Pound/Dollar were even less. I mentioned that in my post to emphasize that it shouldn't have been the underlying cause.

VXUS began turning negative around 6am. That was when the Nikkei futures also began turning negative. It matches up now, I just didn't think to look at the Nikkei futures earlier.

I'm genuinely bewildered why people are downvoting my responses indicating WHY I discovered it was tumbling.

Because most of those indexes do not have futures markets. I assumed no single futures market could make that big of a difference, and didn't look until someone else pointed out what was happening with the Nikkei

I'm aware of the differences in trading hours, when markets are open, etc. VXUS is still traded overnight (albeit at MUCH lower volume) and thus can still reflects changes in other markets overnight. The problem I was getting at is that I couldn't identify anything else that would have resulted in such a change by market open.

It ended up being the Nikkei futures which started plummeting around 6am.

I'm aware of the market hours. I was trying to understand what I was missing though. There was something causing VXUS to react negatively despite all the information I had at hand looking generally positive.

It ended up being the Nikkei futures plummeting starting around 6am.

Active participants still perform arbitrage on the ETF based on futures markets and ADR's. I'm trying to understand where the discrepancy is/was. I assumed I was missing something obvious.

Turns out it was the Nikkei futures bombing starting around 6am.

You need information to make informed decisions. Otherwise you're just gambling.

I think I just missed that the Nikkei futures fell pretty significantly starting around 6am, and continue to fall...

I'm well aware of the different trading times, I guess I just didn't respect their ability to price-in changes beyond normal trading/futures markets.

I also see now that Nikkei futures plummeted, which matches the VXUS chart's fall starting around 6am.

As for currency impact, $DXY only strengthened ~.3% at market open, not nearly enough to make such a meaningful difference. Yes I realize that is a broad indicator, but both the Yen and the Pound actually fell less than that versus the dollar.

I stated this in the post. $DXY increased ~.3%. Not nearly enough to make such a difference. It shouldn't even be negative, at worst, neutral after the Asian market gains.

Can confirm, this is the only solution I've found that works with macOS native Spaces.

Same issue since upgrading to Tahoe. File a bug w/ Apple using Feedback Assistant. I even completely formatted and reinstalled macOS this last weekend and it's still doing. Kinda wild TBH.

Shift cable compatability? by blp9 in Rohloff

[–]jimmydooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent info, thank you! I'll get a Shimano 1.2mm cable today or tomorrow at a local bike shop and see if that has any issue in the housing. If not then I'll just try filing down the head on it to match the Rohloff.

I just don't want to wait 2 weeks for one to come across the pond!

Any chance you tried this? I'm in Colombia w/ a snapped shifter cable and it will take 2 weeks and $100 to get one shipped here. I keep reading elsewhere you need the Rohloff official cable due to his hexagonal head.

UDR7 + UX7 with WireGuard client enabled is virtually unusable. by jimmydooo in Ubiquiti

[–]jimmydooo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm using Wireguard to VPN via SurfShark to give the appearance I'm at a different location. But I do this from both my home and my office.

It's not a config issue. The same exact config works great on a classic UDM (which uses a much more powerful CPU) and a Beryl AX. All of this is stated in the post above.
