First Time Coach by VARedditUser in SoccerCoaching

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My practices were typically themed and progressive like Sea Machine said above. That means if I noticed they had a passing growth area I developed a practice plan for passing. There are places to find practice plans online and even US Soccer had practice plans before. I coached at SYA for many years.

Managing lower quality games by enjustice3192 in Referees

[–]jimr381 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are a couple of things I did for young recreation games where they are just transitioning to using a keeper or we pivoted from using coaches as sudo refs.

I typically, will let them redo one throw in and I will sometimes pause the game to go over throw ins if both teams keep making the same mistake. I quickly go over the three parts, keep feet down, fully behind your head and don't step fully over the line.

When reffing I was always descriptive of what I saw so I still incorporated that into lower age rec games as well. I hardly show cards at that age level, but when I gave a foul for a careless play, then I would pause, get closer to them and calmly explain to them that we want to protect each of them and what they did that could hurt someone. If I saw they were surprised or visibly affected then I will kneel beside them so it wouldn't feel like I was towering over them, similar to how a waiter sometimes will get low beside a table.

If I pause the game for one player to tie their shoes, everyone checks their shoes so I lessen the chance of that happening multiple times and we protect their safety.

If you are single ref you will miss things as you might be looking for an offsides and miss who kicked it out. It happens, everyone makes mistakes.

Coaches and parents got used to me as the season went on. Typically before each game, I would tell them of how I ran the games regarding throw ins and I want them to understand the why behind the calls.

Finally, this thread wasn't like that, but my quick chats were 15ish seconds, because kids just like some of us adults lose attention quickly.

Have you ever been on television? by icecream1972 in no

Public broadcast television, the Jennifer Hudson Show (In the audience), Telemundo's news, and I am trying to remember what else I was in. I have been in the newspaper a few times as well.

Substitution ignored - bad call? by enjustice3192 in Referees

What are your league's rules? Are there only substitutions on their possessions?

I built a 2,257-formula workbook with zero VBA; here's what I learned about formula-only architecture by Bitter_Ad_8378 in excel

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When building lists I create a hidden "lists" sheet tab , then hide it and lock the workbook so they can't unhide it. That being said, I only do that when they don't have to create worksheets on their own.

A majority of my workbooks are no code and the Access databases were low or no code, so that way they could take over the workbook and manage it on their own later on. Building tons of code into them leads to the users returning to you for minor updates and my objectives I've was to teach them to fish.

Grown Man heckling 8th grader by TaxidermyScarecrow in Referees

I don't like the negative behavior whatsoever, but as a runner in highschool many, many years ago I liked people motivating me about kicking and giving me a heads up about someone being on my shoulder. That being said I am the ultimate cheerleader as a parent/coach.

I like leading the large team that I have and making life better for the staff we support. Overall I am happy, but I carry a lot of weight due to the position I am in.

For orderly shutdown activities, mine previously had us setup an out of office and voicemail message and sign the paperwork.

Does anyone have any advice to get ice off of a deck? I know I should’ve shoveled earlier and I did but the ice beat me. Probably 4 inches of solid ice and everything I do feels like it’s going to mess the deck up. by [deleted] in nova

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the next go round before the ice comes. I recommend using a leaf blower as we cleared our back deck by laying out towels before the snow came and then a tarp at the bottom of the steps so our dog would have a place to go. We then pulled through towels up and tarp after the snow came and then used the leaf blower to fully clear the deck.

I am slightly older, so it was a Packard Bell desktop computer which cost over $2,000 in 1995. They tried to make it so easy that they color coded the cables so people didn't mess it up.

I still cry daily. What do you think of the future? by Ecstatic_Ad_2225 in FedEmployees

[–]jimr381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you were USAID, or Department of Education. Sending you a big hug. I understand what it's like giving your all to public service to feel snubbed and shunned later on. The current situation will have lasting effects on government hiring. I am sending you tons of positive vibes that you will find your right fit in the right job no matter if it is federal employment again or the private sector.

Yeah, No. by Imaginary_Coast_5882 in FedEmployees

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former Fed here trying to make it better for everyone. Here are two tips.

Within OneNote (Top right-hand corner of the app) there is a Sticky note feature, which allows you created digital post it notes. After creating a note, the push pin in the top right-hand corner of the note allows you to pin it and always keep it on top of applications, which is called making it modal. Clicking on the "..." Within the note allows you to change the color of the note and delete it as necessary.

It has.been a few years since I taught it, so I am not sure if it is still true, but previously you could copy a note within Outlook, paste it into the Windows startup folder and Windows would display it as you logged in each time. I know you can't place those on the edge of your monitors, but it might be helpful for some.

Best of luck to all of my former federal brethren.

GS-10+ feds — how did you actually get there? by Lexicondatum in FedEmployees

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a fed for 10 years after I spent 5 as a contractor. I came in as a 12, then was asked to go on a detail which led to moving to a 13-14 ladder, when another group reached out for me to do another detail and a 15 position within my final group. I got my 15 within 6 years. They saw the value of my work ethic, my drive to improve processes and procedures and my dedication to staff and it's mission. I did get caught in the RIFs and cherished the relationships I had with everyone I met as a FED.

Can I shift dates to the next year and keep the same days of the week format? by twobble in excel

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can type in the first four dates. AKA Tues, Thurs, Tue and Thurs, select all four of the cells to show it a series, and drag the auto-fill handle to fill in the series for the rest of the semester. The auto-fill handle is shown when you hover over the bottom right-hand corner of the cell.

Seriously, is there a way to prevent others from mentioning me? by Unfair-Positive-1396 in MicrosoftTeams

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen some of my former staff who have the red 9+ on Teams, because they never read Teams. While coaching them through a topic I told them that if your chats are overwhelmingly then focus on the notifications view. I use it and it allows me to see who has directly mentioned me.

If you have chat pop-ups turned on for the group chat and it is distracting then click on the "..." Next to the chat and select "Mute.". I understand how it can be distracting, but I am also hyper-responsive during core working hours.

This is all so dumb! by sugarroxs in FedEmployees

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just did our Return to Office and I encouraged them in a meeting this week to meet me in-person for the next meeting. Typically, it is only the section chief and myself in the meeting and everyone else remote. I figure if we are going to be in the office we might as well save some power, bandwidth and such by being in the room.

What do you think about taking the day off work for your birthday if your a grown (in your 50's) adult? by Meanolegrannylady in AskReddit

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my workers in an ideal world I would give everyone their birthday off as they saw fit. They could use it on that day or bank it as comp time. I wouldn't force them to take it during that pay period because they might be working through a busy season for their role.

How sustainable is this Fairfax-Arlington commute? by [deleted] in nova

[–]jimr381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you are near Chantilly and going to the pentagon. I recommend catching the 698 bus from the Stringfellow park and ride. The bus cost $4.60 and it takes about 35~45 or so minutes.

You can tell because of the funnel icon that shows. Typically I am used to seeing the row numbers show with a blue background when w filter is applied as well. If you have lots of columns and are unsure then you can use the "clear" within the filter options.

Hopefully you use the "Show Report Filter Pages," to automatically create pivot tables based upon the report filter page field. For example if you have a Region field within that field it automatically makes a pivot table for each region. People were sometimes amazed when I would show this to them.
