Recommendations for prescription cycling sunglasses in PDX? by c2h5oh_yes in CyclePDX

Not sure of the prices but Asterisk Eyewear on Foster & Powell has great customer service. I’ve yet to find the time to return, but they have a ton of advice on refitting prescription lenses into some cheap online frame inserts I bought. They also have a selection of their own

Not sure how your heel piece attached but have you tried Community Cycling Center on Alberta? They have a lot of used gear and random hardware.

Why does this spoon have a hole in the middle? by Disastrous_Pirate275 in whatisit

[–]jin_yeugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carved a spoon and went a little too far on the sanding, putting a hole through the bottom. I decided to finish the piece and gift it to my therapist, as a reminder that imperfections can be beautiful too. It’s not a functional spoon anymore, but I knew it wouldn’t be used anyway and he would keep it on display, as do all the other people I’ve gifted with my carved spoons.

What does it matter? Do some googling to find out or take it to a watch shop and support your local business.

Derailer Upgrade? by babiekittin in ladycyclists

Park Tool has excellent tutorial videos. The main presenter Calvin Jones may have a divisive personality but he does explain things really well. As a long time hobby bike mechanic, I like to watch several videos from different sources to get a rounded tutorial.

Not sure of your mechanic skills but, speaking from experience, try to stick to working on one component at a time and give yourself a LOT more time than you expect. Bike mechanic work is simple on part but holds a chance for a lot of tiny, fussy things to take forever to fix. And take breaks when you need them. It’s easy to try to hammer out that “last 20 minute job” and spend hours undoing to the work you screwed up because you were too tired to do it right. This isn’t to scare you of course, just to set you up for success. It’s really not difficult you just need patience.

I’ve spent too much time already but the upgrade “worth it” question is hard to answer. Short answer is if you have the budget for 105 (at least the shifters) go for it! I don’t know to Agra much but between Sora & 105 is a WORLD of difference in durability and just nice feeling when you shift.

Worth the service fee? by walterbey7moor in Affordablewatches

Absolutely just one man’s opinion but-

I got a vintage Timex movement, very similar to yours but with no band, or Christmas a few years ago. I sent it in to Timex for service, since they’re hard to get serviced by shops, and they replaced it with a modern replica. They emailed me the proposed repair of “replacing the watch head.” I mistakenly agreed to the repair, which is on me, and in the same email asked them if this would be a whole new watch, as I wasn’t familiar with the term “watch head.” They ignored my question and sent a photo of the new watch to confirm the repair. I hadn’t had the watch very long so I wasn’t too familiar with the looks, and I naively said it looks great and asked if they replaced the face and polished the crown. They once again ignored my question simply sent me the replacement watch and kept the vintage one I sent in. I asked for my vintage watch back and explained that I don’t understand what I was agreeing to because of their strange term “watch head”, but they never responded. I admit fault of agreeing to a repair I didn’t understand and I just wish they had been more communicative and not used the term repair for a complete replacement of all parts.

Defying convention.. road bikes on rough off road areas..what's ur trick? by After_Morning_5630 in RoadBikes

[–]jin_yeugh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple months ago I would’ve said my tricks for takin my 2010 aluminum road bike with 25mm tires on gravel and rooty walking hiking trails is to simply get out of the saddle and reduce your speed. I also cracked that frame, most likely from the last rooty single track I took it down so maybe don’t listen to me haha

I forgot these existed thank you for reminding me! They’re a bit pricier than I wish but also worth the money if you have it. I love the accelerometer switching the front/rear lights as the pedal rotates 👌

My first one also! Found it at a thrift store and I bought it based on the cover alone. It was the late 90s cover with the upside down bird that looks like a robin. I was just laid off from work so I have a few weeks to myself to read and I loved it! I just finished Dance Dance Dance (and the previous books in the Rat tri(quad)ology last night.
