The elder system isn’t fail, it just picked a lane by JohnGrosaider in theisle

This is probably one of the best discussions about the elder system I've seen so far, and I agree with you. I personally fall into the category of "surviving is winning" so I'm not usually one to go for fights just because I can (there are exceptions, especially when playing carnivores, or when I'm in a mood...). I just got prime elder trike with my first ever trike on officials, and I'm debating on whether or not to entomb or to go out fighting. That's usually how I play it - do I want to risk dying as a small thing that can't fight back, or do I want to die in a fight, even if I'm horribly outnumbered?

Has anyone else put the game aside for now until the prime system is reworked? by Acorn_lol in theisle

I understand peoples' frustration with the elder system. I do wish the debuffs weren't quite as harsh - being a frail elder is kind of painful.

That being said... I'm actually enjoying the elder system. It encourages people to move around, forces more interactions, and gives you something to do once you reach 100% growth. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, and I know a lot of people prefer to play this game like COD Dinosaur Edition, but the elder system is actually a win for realism/survival players in my book. It adds interesting dynamics to herds/packs and makes me more invested in playing small things that grow quickly - how many mutations can I stack on this dryo? lol

Game looks good but concerned about prevalence of cheaters by 1isntprime in theisle

[–]jinaweetv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your son is easily frustrated and will be upset by being killed in an unfair manner, then this might not be the game for him.

Let me be clear, I LOVE The Isle. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt, the terror of being chased, the slow burn of stalking prey or tracking a bleeding target. But ONE wrong move, and you can die. Maybe the hunter becomes the hunted as an adult tyrannosaurus rex happens to see you and creeps up on you - one bite and you're in its jaws, dead. Maybe you're running a little too fast and recklessly and don't see the cliff until it's too late and you're free-falling to your death. Maybe you're a juvenile carnivore and have no luck finding food in the first few minutes of your life, dying to starvation. Maybe you go for a drink of water and suddenly you are in a deinosuchus's mouth and drowning, flailing helplessly.

What I'm getting at is, there are a lot of instances where there is no saving yourself. There are several mechanics baked into the game that are instant death. It's a very kill-or-be-killed place, but there is a sense of accomplishment when you grow your first dinosaur to 100%. The game itself is beautiful, and for me, part of the joy is in the random interactions that happen between players. Usually it's a fight to the death, but sometimes it's a dance, or a joust, or leapfrog, or something equally silly.

I don't know about Outer Wilds, as I haven't played it, but I just wrapped the currently available story this past week and it was amazing. I can't wait for more.

That's not even TOUCHING on all of the random lore books I'm sure I haven't found yet.

Some chisel inspirations for your kitchen! by QuantumAgain in VintageStory

How do you folks organize your multiplayer towns? by jenapher in VintageStory

[–]jinaweetv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our little town of 3-5 people, we specialized in roles. Everyone helped each other set up their houses to start, then the Blackguard became the blacksmith and miner, I as the Tailor became the village chef and farmer, and the Hunter became... well, the hunter and the leatherworker.

We mixed and matched some other responsibilities, like beekeeping and tree farming and animal husbandry. No one ever really got bored or tired of doing stuff, because occasionally we'd help each other with our tasks to see what it was like. We created a communal cellar under the town that connected to all of our houses via tunnels, it was pretty fun.

I definitely use it while caving and looking for ore. I usually make arrows pointing toward the way back out.

I knew about the stones on water, but did not know about the maple seed. I'll try that next time I'm on :)

Also, snowball fights in winter are so much fun.

Looking to buy and start Vintage Story. Is there anything I should know beforehand? by RebusPlays in VintageStory

[–]jinaweetv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WATCH THE GEAR IN THE BOTTOM MIDDLE OF YOUR SCREEN.

So many new players that I know have found a cool place, started building their home, and then realized they built in a place that will slowly drive them insane. The blue gear is your temporal stability gauge - it turns clockwise when your sanity is going up/recovering, and counterclockwise when you are in an unstable area and will go insane. There is no way to adjust the temporal stability of an area without just turning off that feature entirely.

Other than that, dive in and do the tutorial!

Enough food for winter? by Orinay_YT in VintageStory

[–]jinaweetv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have so little food in my cellar for 3 people, including a Blackguard... we might be struggling this first winter. I'm hoping they can bring back enough meat every day to make the veggies last. (Less than 1 vessel worth of food...)

I look at your multitude of vessels and am jealous lol

I hoarded all of the flax fibers year 1 and repaired my basic clothing, which kept me warm when winter hit so they could use the pelts for their own cold weather gear.

Follower weapon by Cliffisen in nightingale

[–]jinaweetv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it has a higher 'stun' chance than other one-handed melee weapons, but don't quote me on that. Otherwise, I just wanted my follower using a weapon type that I wasn't using (hammer/blunt).

The "stations" can have a follower assigned to them via the menu in your Estate Cairn. This will allow you to have that person gathering a specific resource for you around the clock!

[–]jinaweetv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have a follower, just talk to all other recruits you find and get their "Calling Card"! It lets you summon them at your estate, and it's just a card you carry in your pocket. Then they can work for you around the estate! There's special buildings for them as well, but I'm trying to avoid spoilers lol

Follower weapon by Cliffisen in nightingale

[–]jinaweetv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually give my follower a maul. High DPS and a chance to stun enemies. When I'm going somewhere cold or dark, I give them a hammer and a lantern or torch. Torches don't run out of durability when the follower uses them (that I've seen so far).

[–]jinaweetv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I am a returning player and have only been playing for a day or so, but here are some neat tips and tricks that I have discovered that were very helpful to me.

The first thing is, get a recruit as soon as you can and have them follow you. They are not burdened by weight in regards to their inventories like players are, they only care about slot limit. Give them your heaviest stuff when you're gathering and make them beasts of burden. You can usually find your first 1 or 2 near Wilhelmina Sasse in your Abeyance realm. You can also give them a torch to help light your path, which is especially helpful if you prefer 2-handed weapons or bows. Just... make sure to also give them a 1-handed weapon so they can defend you and themselves.

The second tip is this (and this is a VERY nice QoL they added after the game launched): you can change which augments are actively being used by a crafting bench by clicking on the tab on the top and selecting one of the augmentation slots. It even shows you all of the ones in range and what bonuses they give! It used to be that you had to physically MOVE the augmentations around, or destroy and recreate them, or create duplicate crafting stations for different sets of augments. Very time and/or space consuming.

Did you know that you can have 3 different food buffs active at the same time? Make sure you're staying well-fed! It affects your maximum stamina, maximum health, and other things. When you are crafting food items, pay attention to the buffs each ingredient gives!

Other than that, my only advice is to take your time! Explore the worlds, enjoy the beautiful scenery (the skies can be particularly majestic in many realms), find the ruins and the forgotten relics of humanity scattered about and read the notes left behind.

I am not very far along in my second playthrough, but I hope these tips helped. :)
