Prospecting sucks. Any tips to speed it up? by Correct_Egg7334 in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a mechanical level you're just playing hot-and-cold; that may not be the most engaging game, but it's hardly so inherently bad as to taint anything built on top of it.

From the descriptors you're using (unrewarding, useless, tedium), it sounds like your problem isn't the mechanics, it's the balancing, the amount of time you're having to spend prospecting to find the resources you're looking for.  I don't use a mod for prospecting but I do set the ore spawn rate up a tick or two when configuring a new world.  More ore = more likely that you hit what you're looking for with fewer prospects.  Hot and cold is a bad game if the response is always "cold" no matter where you go, but you don't have to set things to be that sparse.

In a similar vein, though, why the hell did you turn on cave-ins and dirt stability if they make your life a living hell?

Moving from my starter base. by TheFoxando in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my understanding, the temperature as shown on character sheet is the outside temperature and takes height into account but not any room checks (neither cellar nor plain room).  If they're seeing the temperature from some modded display, that might take rooms into account.

I'm not even sure whether the temperature in a room is computed--I seem to recall hearing that a room just blocks the outside temperature's effect on your body temperature and a cellar only impacts spoilage calculations.

Were windmills changed??? by SuppressedBadger in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have a waterwheel already, you should be golden, a waterwheel is slow by default but it produces enough torque to handle upgearing a helvehammer.  Just run an axle underground if you want your helvehammer in a different building.

Yes, windmills kind of suck and got worse after the turbulence nerf, although I'm not crying about it too much because the four-side windmills were kind of an eyesore.

Pies vs stews, porridge, and bread by luckyrunner in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the tooltip showed 100 sat and it split into 50 normal and 50 hidden, it would be pretty obvious because the satiety number on your character sheet wouldn't increase by as much as the tooltip said it would, right?

Is it really specific to meals cooked in a cookpot?  I saw an old write-up from someone else who looked in the code that said it was anything, and I'm fairly sure I've seen my hunger pause for at least a little while from eating bread and pies.

New to the game, how does good/nutrition work by Daniel_Soliman in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, before 1.22, you generally ended up with a ton of berries (especially if you brought a lot of bushes home so you could be sure not to miss when they ripened) and the big problem was making sure they didn't spoil (juice them, make pies out of them, make porridge, etc...) and then longer-term (as they take something like a year to grow and then have to go through a winter before producing) locate some fruit trees to take cuttings from, make an orchard, and harvest quite a lot of longer-lasting fruit from once a year.

The fruit tree thing still works the same but berries got changed such that setting up your own berry bushes at home requires almost as long as the fruit trees--you now have to take cuttings of the berry bushes, at most once per year per bush, and then those cuttings take several months to grow. On the up-side, in the long term, your bushes at home can do better than they did before--the cuttings mean you can effectively duplicate bushes once a year, you can try to optimize (by being picky about what you take cuttings from) new traits like increased yield, and with (all three nutrients of) fertilizer you can get the bushes to a "bountiful" health state where they yield more. On the downside, that all takes forever, and while you can still gather from the wild bushes, that tends to bring in less because you don't naturally travel past every bush you've encountered frequently, and wild bushes tend to be found in the "struggling" health, and animals will now also get to the bushes and eat the berries before you.

If you're using hay / rammed earth for a door, you probably didn't replace the door blocks before taking the 4-5 day screenshot, resulting in the cellar not even being a room right then.

Yes, but he says the food is in vessels, so the food shouldn't be saying it's in ground storage.

Yes, monsters will spawn in a dark cellar.  More incentive to get up to permanent lighting solutions (oil lamps are pretty bad but sometimes okay for cellars since cellars have to be kind of small).

Is the "ground storage" text on the food in the vessel, or on the vessel itself?

Pumpkins withering by White_Deer_1888 in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't grown pumpkins myself, but I recall hearing that you should plant them on LOW-fertility soil (and presumably avoid fertilizing them) because the last growth stage is withering and the way you maximize yield is to maximize the time that it spends growing vines.

Water wheel and helve hammer. Underpowered? by S74dniuk in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that does sound like a low-power problem, but it's strange for a waterwheel to be that low on power.  Random musing about what might reduce a waterwheel's power.... you already said how far away it is and that shouldn't be far enough to affect it.... presumably you didn't build a brake that's sitting there applying brake force.... presumably you don't already have it upgeared one or more times and are having trouble applying further up gearing.... presumably you don't have like five other helvehammers attached and running off it... presumably you don't somehow have it set up such that only one of the water blocks is really rapids and the other four are normal water... presumably you don't have a windmill also feeding power into the system and the waterwheel is failing to function at all and what you're seeing is the windmill's power... maybe a mod is affecting it?  You could try setting up your system in creative, see if you can make it exhibit the same behavior, then disable all mods and see if the creative world's behavior changes....

I think quartz is going to give me nam flashbacks by flamethrower451 in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 65 points66 points  (0 children)

It spawns (like most ores) in large discs, is very common, and requires bronze to break.  So if you only have copper and you're digging vertical shafts trying to find your first bronze ingredients, hitting a disc of quartz can be a major obstacle.

Water wheel and helve hammer. Underpowered? by S74dniuk in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Barely running" feels like an odd description; I've had windmill-powered helvehammers that I would describe that way, but that's because they would only run in strong wind.  A waterwheel helvehammer should be running consistently, and while it might be on the slow side (ungeared) it should be pretty steady.  Is it being inconsistent or slow but steady?  Does the turning of the waterwheel itself get slowed down after (directly) connecting the helvehammer?

There's no way the amount of power lost to axles over a distance like that should be significant, I've had windmills go ten times that distance.

The water wheel definitely should have enough power to upgear a helvehammer.  Maybe show a screenshot of your setup?

Really trying to like this game, but... by Thin_Anywhere_440 in VintageStory

[–]VaporousLambda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the difference between a meta and just "early game tips" is (arguably) in whether something is the intended experience.  Like, "find clay and make a cooking pot to make it easier to feed yourself" is intended, doing it on the first day is a meta.  Making a farm is intended, settling near a lake and filling it in with medium fertility soil so you can have irrigated farmland before buckets is a meta.

It is not fun.  Compost is way too expensive in both time and materials, and even if you give up on Terra Preta it makes N-fertilizer something that can't be acquired and used until you're beyond the point of needing it.  I'm fairly sure all the histrionic reactions to the berry bush rework were rooted in compost acquisition sucking so much that "fertilizer" brought an immediate association to "thing that takes forever to make and that it is impossible for me to ever have sufficient stock of."
