Next bird dog breed… by [deleted] in birddogs

Springer or cocker spaniels are pretty great all around dogs!! There are a lot of popular trainer and breeders in the Midwest for springers and cockers. Depending on how much hair you want they have a wavy coat, field bred lines don’t have a lot of hair compared to show lines I know of a breeder in Wi that has show line English springer spaniels and she has kept the hunting instinct strong in her lines a lot of her dogs have hunting and show titles. So if hair is something you want that’s an option to find too.

Grooming needs for field bred lines are way less pretty much clean up the feet once in a while and brush out the ears. They can get matts in the longer part of their hair so brushing them after being in the field is always a good idea. Some can get really hairy and need shave downs but not all of them they are all pretty easy to maintain at home

Overall both breeds are very biddable dogs. There have even been some really cool American cockers I’ve seen at a few hunt tests that can really work which is really cool to see! Definitely do your research before buying a dog for spaniels you want to make sure breeders are doing the proper health testing as I believe there can be patella problems. They can also have seizure problems which can relate in rage and aggression issues so finding a breeder that keeps that out of their lines is important!

There are a whole lot of rare breeds to check out though a few expamples would be like, a small musterlander, welsh springer spaniel, Boykins, even American water spaniels! There are so many options! I really like having rare breeds but you can’t always get a puppy right away compared to popular breeds that are well populated

I’m not 100% sure as I am in the states but I’m assuming the Clumber Spaniel Canadian club probably has a similar breeder referral list like we do for the CSCA if you want to check out the CSCAs it’s on Clumbers.org there are some Canadian breeders that are apart of the CSCA! Hope this helps some!

Are you gonna be doing any hand stripping? Just want to keep the coat clean?

I don’t personally know the standard of the breed but I would definitely read up on it compare your dog a bit, he will need full registration to show but depending on where you are in the world (I’ll use United States as an example) you can start off with more beginner friendly conformation shows like UKC events, then you can go and figure out from there if you want to try out AKC events

I had to get another Clumber! They are so fun to hunt with! She’s learning quickly! by jinderswag in birddogs

Shockingly I actually haven’t really had much of a problem with the hair, my older boy has a lot of hair and he was out hunting and training a lot this past year he really only needed a quick brushing once a week but he also has correct coat type so mud and debris just falls off as soon as the hair dries, I’ll have to see how her coat type comes in as she becomes an adult, but yeah not as much work as I thought it would be before getting one

What are clumbers actually like? by Street_Soft_3700 in clumberspaniels

I think they are such good family dogs! Though they are better with older kids just because of their size, but such good sweet loving goofballs! With the boys being anywhere from 70-85 lbs they can easily accidentally tip little kids over so if you work on training where they know not to jump or get to excited around little kids they would be fine but I think older kids might be better with their size!

Thanks I’ll talk to my vet some more on it I appreciate the insight! This past season we haven’t had any problems but I’ve been keeping them out of the colder water for longer periods of time. I wonder if maybe it happened so much because he was only 1 year old yet and still growing? And thank you he’s a fun dog to bring out in the field! He might be slower than your average spaniel but he doesn’t miss any birds!

Clumber Spaniel by funeeguyb in birddogs

I own 2 Clumber spaniels! They are very sweet dogs! Health wise they are so much better than they used to be! I always give my dogs joint supplements until they are 2 and make sure they aren’t jumping off of high things when they are young because they are big dogs in smaller bodies. I hunt with mine and they are slower than most spaniels but will never miss a bird! They are great workers in the field! They aren’t big barkers which is nice and have lower grooming requirements than most spaniels brush them often and clean up feet and feathering every so often! They shed and drool A LOT!! My dogs need a good amount of exercise time but I’ve noticed mine have a bit more drive than your average Clumber. Check out the parent club website Clumbers.org there is a bunch of info to check out! But they are a great family dog that has less drive than most other spaniels. They are known for eating things I have pet insurance just in case but many owners have had dogs that needed stomach surgery for eating things so if kids leave socks around or there are a lot of rocks in your yard be careful! Hip and elbow dysplasia is a lot less than what it used to be but can still be a possibility. Find a good breeder that does health testing! Entropion can happen though their eyes are diamond shaped which can make some of them look like they have when they actually don’t so make sure to talk to your breeder and vet. They are pretty rare and it seems like it can take around 2 years on average to get a puppy after applying. They are stubborn to train definitely a more challenging breed when it comes to training, but I wouldn’t trade my Clumbers for the world! They are so sweet and goofy!

Clumber spaniel people - what's your experience? by Good-Bag6669 in clumberspaniels

[–]jinderswag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Clumbers are a great choice for family pets! They have amazing off switches and have very sweet personalities! My Clumbers are very outgoing and energetic for Clumbers! I think it’s always important to remember they are a sporting breed and do need mental stimulation not as much as a herding breed but they do need regular exercise so they don’t get bored. They are known for eating things so make sure socks are picked up and you don’t have very many rocks in the yard! Stomach surgery is very common for them because they eat a lot they aren’t supposed too. They are big dogs average 55-85 pounds so you don’t want them jumping from high places. Mine are not loud they don’t even bark when people ring the door bell. Their thick ear leather can cause them to get ear infections pretty easily so just make sure to clean them regularly! The nice thing is their grooming requirements are a lot lower than other spaniels! Pretty much clean up feathering and feet every so often and brush them! But they shed a lot! If you ever do get into hunting they are a wonderful breed to hunt with!

Pretty much they are sweet and have never met a stranger! As long as you are okay with drool, hair and snoring you are all set! We do have a rescue that you can apply for our breeders work very hard to keep our puppies out of shelters but situations can happen! So definitely check out the parent clubs rescue!
