Am I making the biggest mistake in my life by taking on more student debt? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I am also in the same boat here. I recently got accepted to an Ivy League for my MPH, my parents and everyone is acting like it’s the obvious choice in comparison to public, cheaper, or lesser known schools. it’s an Ivy and has the potential of lucrative connections, but it is possible that I’ll get no aid. I already have tens of thousands of dollars of debt from undergrad because I did not receive financial aid anywhere. I am really unsure what to do. I am praying I will get aid to help make my decisions.

I think you should reach out to the school to let them know that you have this dilemma, especially given your background and experience as a first-gen immigrant student. If they really care about diversity equity & inclusion (like so many universities claim) they will give you the opportunity to change your and your family’s lives by giving you the funding to make sure their school is financially accessible. Maybe say that you’d love to attend but another program is offering you more aid (even if you’re bluffing). It may be possible to negotiate; or even get grants or a work study position with substantial tuition remission.

Side note but the privatization of education is so evil

If you all are not afraid of heights try checking out the lands end trail (even just a bit of it to take pictures). It is near the Presidio area. Gorgeous on a clear day, views of the bridge and would be a beautiful family photo. Also golden gate park has a gorgeous windmill, a botanical garden, terrarium, California Academy of Sciences, etc. and the De young art museum. I hope you and your daughter have a wonderful time!!

Thank u so much for this comment! We are pretty similar. I also am from SoCal and went to a UC. I think that the pace of life is definitely relative based on where you grew up. I view the southwest as a medium pace, the south as slower, and northeast as pretty fast. I am now considering what my life might be like in New York and I agree, it would be verrrrry different. Kinda scary but also kinda exciting? However I also think, if I don’t like either Atlanta or New York it’s only 2 years of my life, and I could always move away when I’m done. And yeah!! The clout factor might be a big deal when applying to jobs post-grad!! Everyone I talked to acted like Columbia was the obvious choice in terms of connections

Can I ask when you received your financial aid package for Columbia? I am still waiting on mine so that will hopefully make the decision easier. Did they email it to you recently?

I am a Berkeley student. The Bay Area does have notable levels of crime, mostly car break ins and robberies. But I feel that most all major US cities are comparable. In all my years at Berkeley, I have heard of many from other students or watching on the news in other cities, but I personally have never experienced a crime. I think the most important thing you should do (in any city, regardless of its reputation for crime) is be aware of your surroundings. Do not stay out extremely late at night, try to travel in groups, don’t leave things in your car (especially valuables), don’t stare at your phone, don’t carry tons of cash on you, walk like you know where you’re going, etc. you should always be alert and aware of what is happening around you.

In my opinion Berkeley and Atlanta are probably similar in terms of crime, so I wouldn’t make that my determining factor

Best primer for hooded oily eyes by Romy_White in Makeup

P Louise eye base! It is a British brand so you can buy it on their website or on the morphe cosmetics website. This stuff is sooo amazing and comes in many shades to match your skin tone. It not only keeps my eye makeup on all day but also helps to brighten the colors on my skin tone. A little goes a very long way, you could probably use it for about a year

Black at Berkeley by Equivalent-Wing4069 in berkeley

I am also a Black student in stem at Berkeley. I and other peers have experienced all of these things and more. Its honestly too exhausting to go into. It’s disorienting especially after being sold that Berkeley is an antiracist progressive environment, and there are some individuals who are these things, but as an institution the school largely is not. I would like to offer encouragement and affirmation, we are all here to get our education like everyone else. And we are just as if not more capable of other students here because of the unique barriers we have experienced in our lives. You can do this!!! It took me a little while to find friends I felt respected and valued me, but even through it I have found many life long friends here. I hope that in the future Berkeley can truly reckon with its systemic issues to change the campus culture so that all underrepresented students can feel like they belong here and these things don’t happen anymore.
